I recently did some tests with flash diffusers that fit onto the hot shoe when the pop-up flash is used on a DSLR.
I've had one of these gadgets for some time but after hearing a talk related to macro photography where the speaker used this idea for moths and other insects.


Some test shots that show how effective the shadow softening is with 2 different diffusers can be seen here:
