Title: Lightroom and Qimage...
Post by: ben.nic.king on June 16, 2009, 09:31:08 PM
Hello... new to the forum!    Just upgrading to Qimage "Studio" to use with my Nikon D300, havent used Qimage much in the past.

I've been using Adobe LRoom more and more lately, I like the interface and the keywording, but not so much the printing.   I'm wondering if anyone has used these two programs together, e.g. LR for sorting/retouching, and Qimage for printing.   I shoot in Nikon Raw (NEF) format, and I know LR does not actually make any changes to the original file.  I wonder how I can make these two programs work together without introducing too many extra steps in my workflow?

Any advice / experience appreciated.

Ben

I don't use lightroom, but one thing you want to keep in mind is that Qimage uses a few buddy files to store the associative filters. As a result you may need to change settings so that lightroom knows about them, or plan to spend time moving and renaming them manually.

It's more of a gotcha than necessarily anything else and if you don't make adjustments in Qimage it's a complete non-issue.

How about reducing the steps in your workflow?
I suggest you try using Qimage for your raw processing and print from raw now that you have Studio. Don't be put off by the simplicity of the minimal adjustments compared to LR.
You may just wish you'd not spent the money on LR and got Qimage SE sooner  ;)
Oh, and it's worth the few extra $ to buy a camera profile for Q raw processing.
Terry.

Ben

The simplest solution is to export from Lightroom as a maximum quality jpeg without image sizing or sharpening into a 'Print' folder. Then print with QI as usual. I believe there are ways of exporting from LR directly to external programs, but as I say the easiest way is to have QI open at the 'Print' folder, then press f5 to refresh the thumbnails after exporting.

I basically do what Brian does. I also export using the Prophoto color space.
