Hi there, pretty sure this must have come up but have spent a few hours reading posts and cant find it, (this is where first reply gives link and I facepalm!)

I process a number of CF cards each day (10+) and I need to copy them all into a single folder but rename them so they will all be in order that a) they were taken on each card, and b) the order they are copied into the folder. An example;

Card 1 has image 1054,1055, 1056 and 1057
Card 2 has image 320, 321, 322 and 323

When I copy these images to the desired folder they should now be renamed to preserve the order taken (within each card) and order copied (order of cards copied).  xx1, xx2, xx3, xx4, xx5, xx6, xx7, xx8 which represents 1054,1055, 1056, 1057 320, 321, 322, 323.

FlashPipe can copy from multiple cards and you can set it up so everything goes to the same folder, either automatically by choosing the Today's Date naming option (which can be edited with extra text) or manually name the folder.
You would get images sorted in the order taken by setting the file re-name options to date and time.
The suggested settings Set #4 says "Create a Unique ID from Date & Time"

There's a 7-day trial available here http://www.ddisoftware.com/flashpipe/downloads.htm

Unfortunately that wont work because the date and time of the images will not be the same as the order we wish them to be presented. One card could have been shot at 11am but be the second card we import, the first having been shot at 1pm on the same day. Original image name and date/time taken cannot be used to generate the naming sequence, it needs to be something like batch# + sequence# 01001, 01002... then second import would be 02001, 02002....

A bit difficult for any software to work that out I would have thought  Huh?
Would the re-naming options of driver letter, camera model, or session sequence help?
You won't get exactly what you have described but if willing work with the software, something approaching your requirement cold be met.
You might have to consider a second round of re-naming to get exactly what you want using something like ReName Master (freeware)
