So I picked up an inexpensive point and shoot (Nikon S8100) to keep in the car so would always have a camera handy.  New SD memory card (since I don't otherwise use this card).  First set of pictures - about half of the 100 or so jpegs are corrupted and unreadable.  I may try looking at these with a binary editor, but meantime, is there an easy way to tell whether I have a defective camera or a bad memory card?

Hi Mel,
I would suggest you try to borrow another card or get someone to try your card in another camera.
Terry

or reformat the card
