I thought I had read somewhere about a B&W plugin or profile in Qimage. If so I can't locate anything in my install. I have version 2011.136
Regardless, is there a speficic work flow to print B&W with printers not really known for B&W output such as Epson 1400 and R1900.

What you have seen is probably the use of B&W profiles for printers that already have a good B&W output due to more grey inks in the ink set. Profiles created with QTR profile application or similar methods. Your 1400 loaded with a custom quad ink set would qualify.
