Title: Can't load/edit esiting ICM profile
Post by: dave_s on August 04, 2016, 09:44:34 PM
Just installed and ran PP v8.43 on WinXP. All started up fine.
However, the only file type allowed is 'image', there is no 'Load profile' in the File menu as referenced in the Edit menu if I try the Edit Profile option.
Major flaw or is there some missing config setup?

My guess, is that Prism expects the 'first' profile to be first create by Prism, and only then edited. So, I tried copying an existing ICM file to the ~Pgm Files/Prism/ and ./Data folders, but Prism didn't find it. Maybe I need to create a 'user profile' folder there?
Seems there must be a way to get Prism to look at an existing ICM file for editing.....

No flaw. PP only edits profile it has made. So, go ahead and print and scan the targets and make a profile.
Make test prints and then edit if required.
PP uses specific algorithms and targets, and the edit portion is geared to that.

Given the usefulness of the profile editing feature of PP I wonder why Mike has restricted it's use to editing only profiles made by PP?  Is a copyright thing?  I started out with PP about 10 years ago but now use the ColorMunki for creating printer profiles, and while the Munki does have a feature that allows "optimization" by making/scanning additional targets, it would be really nice to be able to tweak the profiles further with a profile editor.

Thanks for the clarification. Unfortunately, the editing of existing profiles is the primary reason I bought PP -- I have a couple printer profiles developed with DataColor which I need to 'tweak' because some specific colors need more print ink saturation. Having to build a new profile, which then has no guarantee will match the DC profile I have been using, adds yet another layer of "unknown offsets" and another long set of open-loop adjustments. It is fine that the code has custom algorithms, but to disallow editing non-pp ICM file data seems absurd. I'd believed that ICM files are all built to CIE standards with, at least, core profile data which is transportable between print apps -- even if there were some non-portable header info that might get lost when porting. I can't claim to have read everything on the site about PP but I genuinely had the impression that I would be able to edit any ICM file data. This is a severe disappointment at best.

It does not "disallow", it just isn't designed to do it.
I wonder if the software supplied with equipment such as Xrite i1 Photo will edit profiles made with a equipment  from a different manufacturer; I somehow doubt it.

One suggestion, if you use Qimage Ultimate for printing, it's possible to use a Print Filter to correct consistent colour errors in prints. This does not alter the image in any way and applies the correction for printing only.
