Title: Linear 48 bit Scan Prompt
Post by: guystooges on November 25, 2009, 12:21:23 PM
Hello Everyone

I am new to Profile Prism and have a question regarding the "linear 48 bit scan prompt" when profiling a scanner.

First - my hardware/software for this situation include a Canon 8600F flatbed scanner and VueScan 8.5.xx Professional Edition running on Windows 7 Pro x64.

Within the PP Help file I looked up the instructions for acquiring the target image and followed the internal link "set scanning settings as recommended for your scanner".  It was there that under Canon Scanners where VueScan is recommended over the Canon software and a section titled "Recommended VueScan settings" helped step me through the preparation process.

Now, it is the next to last option in this process which has me puzzled.  It states "Open scan in Profile Prism and reply "Yes" to the linear 48bit scan prompt".  When this prompt titled Confirm does appear, it reads "Is this 48 bit TIFF a linear (gamma 1.0) image and is it being used to profile a printer?  If you are profiling a camera/scanner, answer NO."

The Confirm dialog prompt offers a conflicting set of instructions for whether to choose "YES" or "NO" when compared to the Help file.  Since I am profiling a scanner then according to it I should choose "NO", but the Help documentation says I should choose "YES".

Which is the correct - YES or NO?  The PP histograms of the resulting TIFF files from either choice are quite different so I know I need to get this answered correctly before I continue.

Thank you in advance for your help in this matter and I look forward to using Profile Prism!

The simple answer here is: answer "No" if you are profiling the scanner and "Yes" if you are profiling a printer.  So in this case, you're profiling the scanner, so the correct reply is "No".

Regards,
Mike

Thank you Mike!  I will ignore the 'Yes' option suggested by the Help documentation.

Why is the correct option NO, it is after all a RAW File, I find If I select no the image is too dark to work with.
