Title: Please quantify my risk
Post by: bluelen on November 11, 2013, 06:50:40 PM
I've examined the material available, and although I am very interested in profiling my printer, cost is of concern to one on a limited budget.  My OS is W7 64bits, and my scanner is a Canon Canoscan4400F.  For what it's worth, I use PSE as my photo editor.

I've read the cautionary message about the perils of using a Canon scanner, but wonder if with the passage of time that is still relevant.  In fact, I just downloaded the current drivers for the scanner, and they are of very recent date. (Perhaps the update obviates the clipping problem mentioned.)  What I'm saying, I guess, is that while I've made my mind up to bite the financial bullet for Prism, the additional $50 or so to buy VueScan would constrain me from going ahead.

I'd appreciate your opinion as to the 64bit question, as well as the scanner issue.

Many thanks for your time and help.

Ok, I'll have a try at answering.
Canon scanners are not frowned on, but recommended in the LIDE configuration.
I believe Terry has your model scanner and I know he is successful.
Usually, the problem is the scanner driver that doesn't allow itself to be taken out of the picture.
It is similar to why you want to use a printer profile. You do not want the printer driver to affect the color of the print. So you set the printer contol to OFF when making or using a printer profile.
Same for the scanner. When you scan your targets, you want no adjustments of corrections made to the scan by the scanner driver, so you need a way to turn that off.

Armed with that information, you could go through your scanner software and the book to see if there is such a mode.
Terry should be along soon to add to this with his Canon model and experiences.

64 bit is not an issue... Profile Prism works on either 64 or 32
I make all my own profiles, using a very cheap Canon LIDE (89.00) scanner, but I need Vuescan to run it.
Hope some of this helps.
Fred

Not quite the same model but a an 8400F which is a few years old. I updated the driver etc. and made sure I had the latest Scangear driver and got some good profiles.
Do not use the Canon Tool box software but use PSE to "Aquire" the scanned image via Twain. This will open the Scangear window which gives you all the control you need.
See attached screen shots that show the Canoscan twain interface; you could check before buying PP that it's similar to what I have attached.
Terry
PS. Just added a 4th screen shot, a very important setting!

Many thanks to both of you for your prompt and helpful replies.  I'll see what the scanner software can furnish.

Hi bluelen,
I said before thinking you may not have Qimage Ultimate:

Of course you can use QU to do the same thing. In fact it's best to use QU to print the target as there is a preset Job that makes it very easy.

As you can see, it resets all you need including setting the print size to Original size..so the target print is the correct size and ppi.

Besides all that, it is the best digital image program you can buy... (at a special low price right now too)

My scanner software tracks the images you kindly attached, but for the Advanced Mode setting in Preferences/Scan.  It doesn't contain the "enable 48/16 bit output" text.  Is this assumed, or of concern?  (I do appreciate you guys' support!)

Not essential I believe, I'd have to check.
However, your scanner is 48 bit capable according to the spec. see below:-

Have you got the latest driver? See below: -
