31  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate Wish List / Queue list removal from QU on: February 18, 2018, 10:26:57 AM
I would not mind the removal of the Queue list from QU.
On the condition that the embedded color space or QU assigned color space is shown per image in the print preview data. That is the only reason I still check the Queue list from time to time.

32  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate Wish List / Frame + Mat simulation on: February 18, 2018, 10:22:16 AM
Hello Mike,

With the border tools already available in QU it should not be that difficult to add a feature where a simulation of a framed print can be made. The new crop tool that is available from the print page preview window already shows the guide lines of a crop resulting from size and border choices + the auto crop and can be activated to a real crop.  I like the way Frame Explorer is implanted in Picture Window Pro. That program no longer requires a license, so it is free but no longer developed. The resulting image crop in that simulation is not brought back to the original, it shows guidelines in the original when the simulation is made but not after that step. For QU it would also be nice to get the data for mat sizes etc from that simulation.

Will I create a problem if I try the Windows Qimage One Demo on the same system I have Qimage Ultimate on?

Is there a kind of upgrade path when Qimage One is satisfying and not all QU has in features is used anyway?

Probably an utterly stupid question. When I want to copy a file in the thumbs window and keep it in the same directory I should rename it. But how does one rename it during that copy session?

Hi Ernst
What I do is right click on the thumb. Then I select RENAME. Just swipe that and COPY. Cancel that box.
Right click again and select COPY. Delete what is in the box and replace with a PASTE; add something to make the name different. I add an A to the end of the filename before the .CR2. Say OK and the new copy (A) appears next to the original

Fred

Fred, thank you. That works, less elaborate as what I was doing, throw in a new created map (copy allows that) and move it back with a 2 after the name. As I often do not need more than a temporary copy to make two different crops to go into one test print I can also just get rid of the total filing address in "Copy" and type Copy. I thought selecting the thumb and drop it in the same window would create the name extended with copy in Windows style.

36  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: QImage Ultimate - "Original Size" question on: October 17, 2017, 01:50:23 PM
If you save a Tiff or Jpeg from Photoshop it has a virtual physical size attached. When you load these files (AFAIK) that describes the conditions where Qimage Ultimate correctly sets the 'Original Size' when 'Original Size" is selected for the image to print. Exports from other applications may not work out correctly, even Tiffs and Jpegs. Other file formats from Photoshop may not work either.

BTW, be aware that assigned color spaces may not work properly either with some image formats.  BMP can have an assigned color space as I understand it, the question is whether applications read that. For B&W work and greyscale files you would like to have the Gamma choice assigned.

I am not going to test what might and what might not work properly but restrict myself to what works and where I know it does not work correctly but does for me :-)

37  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Can't select media type for Canon iPF8300 on: June 28, 2017, 03:18:47 PM
This is an issue with the driver: the iPF8300 driver does not report any media types to Windows which is why there are none listed in the dropdown list.  For drivers like this that do not properly report media types to the Windows OS, you have to click the "Properties" button and select the media type in the driver.  From what I've seen, only the 8300 has this problem although the HP Z drivers sometimes fail to list some custom media types if the user creates custom media types.

In any case, selecting the media type in the driver using the "Properties" button will work even though it won't be listed in the dropdown due to the driver not reporting the selection.

Regards,
Mike

Hello Mike,

So far the Z3200  custom media types are reported but now I have made one that is not showing in Qimage Ultimate but can be selected in the driver. Is it the total number of paper presets that gives the problem or the kind of names used?

38  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate Wish List / "Watched folder" for tethered camera link? on: June 27, 2017, 10:09:02 AM
I have searched the forum for tethered and watched folder but the few hits were from 2008/9 and do not have the answers I looked for. Would it be possible to have that added, Qimage Ultimate showing the last added Raw or Jpeg image in that folder as a Full Screen Display or better Softproof and the profile then based on Hot Folder settings. In that sense it could be an extension of the Hot Folder choices.

The tethered connection can be made with other applications and for each camera brand there usually is a free or cheap solution available. Lightroom supports some brands with tethering but with its Watched Folder feature unsupported cameras can cope as well with again an extra tethering application in use. It would be handy if a Qimage Ultimate hot folder like that can still be used with Lightroom and Photoshop, at least that there will not be a conflict. LR is not used much by me but PS is.

BTW, related to the last Wish in this forum and my wish here. The Thumbnail window could be larger if the Printer related windows are all shrinked Like the Folders window can be shrinked.

Yes, I wondered whether the Queue tab could be weeded out too. Not installed 101 yet so can not comment on the other changes.

Hello Mike,

I am now in a dilemma on this and your ambivalence in the last message does not make it better :-) With the recent GUI change the four could be available at both pages or just once at the bottom of the Print Page tab where the nesting choices etc are. Affecting all the images like nesting choices etc also do and stay visible when either Printer Settings, Print or Queue menu are open. I guess when more driver settings are added to the Printers and Settings tab it could become crowded there too .......

Mike,

Congratulations, a fine upgrade for a 20th Anniversary celebration!
QUAlity; maybe the right time for an extra extension to Qimage Ultimate?

One suggestion; the Mark Edges and Print File info menu entrances shifted to the Prints menu?
They fit better there is my gut feeling. I often add 0.5mm +border plus mark corners and cut slightly within the marks.
Whether the Print filters should go there too is harder to say, they affect the image itself and relate more to processing and printer settings but the crop filters.

Anyway, I like this upgrade right from the start.

42  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: PhotoLine on: June 13, 2017, 12:28:39 PM
About a month ago Ernst Dinkla mentioned a German prog "PhotoLIne"

Thought I would give it a trial.

Cannot make head not tails of it, the instructions and Videos are no help.

Not in the same league as Qimage videos.  Decided I do not have enough time left to persevere with it and will have to stick with my old Elements 7 for the few things I cannot do in QI

Sorry Ernst

Jeff

Jeff, it was mentioned as a good alternative when Adobe decided to go in the cloud. Many found the rent you had to pay for several CC programs as too high and the programs too proprietary. Photoline has a lot of features, from vector to bitmaps, RGB to CMYK, RAW image editing to graphic design features. I like it. Printing still a Qimage Ultimate task. Three years back or so I got a Photoline license and I can still upgrade to a newer version when I want to. Meanwhile Adobe came with a better affordable price on Photoshop + Lightroom CC, so I took that for as long as I will be commercially busy. If that ends I probably renew the Photoline license and skip Adobe as a whole. I also have a Xara Extreme license but did not upgrade that one for two years. That is what I mainly used for vector arts, graphic designs in the past. The Adobe Premium Design suite was there to suit my customers when something had to be altered in the last minute, now I tell them to transfer the changed PDF. In the end I probably have Photoline, Qimage Ultimate and one of the good open source programs like RawTherapee or Darktable. Some people play Sudoku to keep alzheimer at a distance, I try to learn new programs :-) try I wrote.

43  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Long prints give "Scan Line out of range" on: June 09, 2017, 09:39:31 AM
Interesting to hear all the ways people print and the various needs for different kinds of jobs.  You could get close to that (a solid instead of dashed line) by using a thin photo mat on the prints.  For example, use a .1mm top and bottom mat on each print to give you a solid line at the top and bottom... or do it on the left/right if you are printing on a portrait page and the leporellos goes top to bottom.  I assume that line is for the purpose of cutting so it shouldn't really matter if it is dashed or if it has a small gap between pages.

Mike

Mike, never thought about that method, dashed or solid does not matter. I could use a bit more instruction on that method. Edit; more in the sense that I used that feature and abandoned it as it does things I would not expect when I change the images sizes on the print preview. Tried it again and it is the same. I doubt I would use that for the task discussed in the thread.

More often I had a need for just two lines to indicate where to cut and leaving the other opposite sides unmarked, the cut marks etc do not have that choice I think. For example when on a sheet or roll an image + border just fits when the print margin is added (5 or 12mm) so I do not use any cut marks etc in settings then and measure manually for the cut. The other example as a fast way to get an uneven border. I know you added a feature for the last, photo mattes. I would not object to a choice like that in the cut mark etc section. As a matter of fact I would not mind another feature; the possibility to have cut marks On or Off per image on the print page, had a job this week that could use that.

In the end, all roads lead to Rome.

If printing leporellos, I think I'd just take the one massive file and cut it about halfway (at one of the folds) and just have a left and right half.  Then print the left half at the top and the right half on the bottom, butted against the top: similar to compact placement mode.

In fact, if you are starting with one image per page in the leporello, there's no need to create one huge file.  Qimage can print each of those pages side by side (or top to bottom) using compact placement mode or by creating a layout.  Then just select all of the (I'm assuming probably 30-40) individual page images and let Qimage lay them out.

Mike

Thank you Mike for the advice so far,

Done all the possibilities. I like to have a continuing dash line along the length of the print (not between pages) and an easy nesting of 3 or 4 leporellos in the width of the roll of paper. So far it worked for me. Breaking up a leporello because it is more efficient on the roll paper when a single one has to be printed is harder to sell to a customer but price does wonders then.

45  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Long prints give "Scan Line out of range" on: June 06, 2017, 03:32:02 PM
I may have discovered the problem.  In order to get an 800MB image in the 10 inch x 360 inch range, I have to go higher than 65,536 pixels on the long edge.  QU is currently (always has been) limited to 65,536 pixels in either direction and that may be the problem.  It should give you an "Image Read Error" instead of the mentioned error message but it shouldn't matter in the future.  The QU 20th Anniversary Edition releasing later this summer will have the capability to do twice that pixel size.

Regards,
Mike

Mike, the odd thing is that Bernard etc finally decided to bundle 3 of the files in one image, total 2.5 GB, 8 bit, 280 PPI, >72x960 cm print area, and print from Photoshop on the iPF Pro 4000, with your size creation of the 4000 driver in mind. He phoned me at 75% of the length printed, fingers crossed, and the print was ready some hours ago. Now he has to fold the leporellos and cut them while folded .........

I guess further back in time they never hit that length in pixels (lower resolution files), though they reduced the resolution for the trials this time to get this job done and it failed with QU. Might still be another cause given the error text.

My jobs did not go beyond 5 meter if I recall it correctly. I used Qimage's print to file then to first set multiple images after another for a 5m long leporello image. Three of the files then on the print page, some white extra for tolerance at both ends,  1mm white +border and dashed lines along the length for cutting by hand later on. Folded after cutting, cut the extra white at the ends then. Worked well. Not my favorite jobs.
