"v2010.210 is a biannual compatibility update: raw support for 27 new camera models (Studio) and updated video driver support (all editions)."

Mike, are you saying that you will only do a compatibility update once every 24 months? Really?

Biannual and biennial mean "every other year."

If you really mean every six months, then the proper word is "semi-annual" or "twice yearly."

Not picking on you at all; I just want to be sure I'm interpreting correctly. Thanks.

Most dictionaries I've seen have twice-yearly as the primary definition of biannual.  The secondary definition is biennial (every two years).

If you look it up you'll see that "biennial" is the proper term for once every two years.  Biannual, while sometimes used (properly) either way, technically means "twice per year" and the "twice per year" definition is always #1 in the definitions.  The term semi-annual may be technically better when used with "annual", but "semi" can mean "half", "two", or even "partial" so it sounds a little less specific to many people: a lot of people have come to think of "semi-annual" to mean "approximately annual".

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/biannual

Definition of BIANNUAL

1: occurring twice a year

In any case, I added (twice per year) so that no one has to look it up.  Smiley

I know that this is an old topic but it is relevant. It is now over a year since the last update so I feel that annual may now be the more appropriate term if not biennial.
I am posting because I now have a Sony A77 that is not yet properly supported. I was wondering if an update is coming soon to support new cameras?

That camera must be very new.
It is not supported yet even in Qimage Ultimate.

Usually, when there are a few cameras to add per incident, it will happen.

The Sony A77 has been available in limited quantities since last fall. RawTherapee and IrfanView which use dcraw have supported it since September. For major work on raw files I use Photoshop which has supported the camera for some time now. It is just annoying to see the raw thumbnails in Qimage with a major green tint.

The A77 is supported in Ultimate.  The next time the retired versions will be updated is likely sometime after Windows 8 is released.  After that (likely sometime in 2013), we're going to stop software updates altogether on the retired versions.  Any updates to the retired versions (cameras for example) that might happen after that will happen via patches.  For example, you can patch your Qimage right now to read all the raw photos that Ultimate will read including the A77.  It won't read them at the higher quality achievable in Ultimate, but it does make the retired version compatible with all the latest cameras and that's all you would have gotten via an update anyway.

Here's how: just install the latest Qimage Ultimate demo and copy the msdcraw.dll file from Ultimate's install folder and copy it over to your Qimage install folder.  Typically that only requires copying the msdcraw.dll file from "qimage-u" to "qimage" in your program files (x86) folder.

Gee, I didn't see that sucker in there, either.
It has a somewhat different name: Sony SLT-A77V

I installed the trial of Ultimate and copied the msdcraw file over. In both Qimage and Ultimate the colours are way off for raw files but they are both the same. Qimage shifted from a heavy green tint before to a yellow tint now.
When used with my Sony A100 the colours were perfect. It looks like I will not be moving to Ultimate.

Works fine here.  The WB looks a little warm so it looks like dcraw might still be working on the embedded white balance.  That happens sometimes.  I can only do what dcraw does and what you see is what dcraw currently offers.  That said, if you open the A77 files in raw refine and you check "auto WB" or you click with the WB dropper, color looks perfect and it works fine.  To get better color balance, you'll have to wait until dcraw updates with a better WB algorithm.

Mike

Is it possible to separately post the file "msdcraw.dll"?  At sometime, I would like to try "Ultimate" but not now as I'm trying a lot of stuff and I don't want to use my trial just to obtain the file.  I also just got sony's slt-a77 camera and learning to use it.  Not being able to use Qimage Studio would definitely not enhance my printing.

Thanks
