Title: Abstract Error

Hi Mike

I updated to build 112 but still get the "Abstract Error" dialogue appear ~ it is a small dialogue box with only an 'OK' button.  Clicking it seems to do nothing and to clear it I need to close QU and relaunch it.

I've had that on odd occasions; it seemed to occur when I was using the editor when the raw cache was still building. I've tried o make it occur again but cannot!

Never seen nor heard of that one though.  Would have to pin it down to a repeatable sequence.

Thinking about?  I take both RAW & JPEG and I do note the thumbnail & cache building seems to take a good while and maybe it is down to me not waiting for that process to complete.  But what exactly triggers the 'error' dialogue I cannot readily say???

As mentioned elsewhere I save all my images on my NAS and my network is only (for now) 10/100 running AFAIK at 100.

So just maybe I am stuck with it and for the record I am sure even with folders I have previously visited and allowed the thumbs build to happen & finish it starts again every time I open that folder ~ is that odd???

Virtually all the problems regarding slow performance I hear about or come across are caused by people using an external drive as a working disc, especially with large camera files. I think an external drive is an essential accessory, but it should only be used for backup and long-term storage, not for working from. At the moment it is so cheap and easy to fit an additional internal 1 Terabyte hard drive to a desktop PC that it is simply not worth hanging around waiting for the external drive to catch up. If you use a laptop and can't add a disc, keep your current and working files on the computer - it only takes a few seconds to transfer them.

Yeah, NAS drives are great for doing things like overnight backups but they are incredibly slow.  A 100Mb network can only transfer about 10MB per second so even at full network speeds, it would take 10 seconds to open a 100MB file.  Unfortunately network file access is orders of magnitude slower than the max network bit rate too, so opening/reading files will end up being only a few megabytes per second across a network and that's best case scenario with an all-wired network (no wireless access points).  This can cause all sorts of problems as Windows has a lot of timeouts where certain Windows functions fail if they don't complete in a certain amount of time.  That alone can cause errors.  Fortunately, if you have raw photos on that NAS drive and you're able to just let Qimage build the raw cache, it won't actually open the raw files on the NAS drive any more when it is done.  If you must do things like use raw photos off a NAS drive, the key might be to just let Qimage finish building the raw cache.  That way, Windows won't get confused by other operations being too slow and it might not complain.

I have started getting the abstract error as well with version 113.  It seems to be related to opening the edit window and doing a crop or adjusting the crop of an image. It doesn't happen every time I do a crop.

I have not had any problems with the latest versions. Try updating to v115.

I spoke too soon  :(
It occurred with v115: -
Raw cache was building and I opened the editor for one image.
I made a TTS and straighten filter and clicked done.
That is when the Abstract Error appeared, just as the Editor closed.

Then I have some questions because I do that all the time and never get that error:

(1) Why was the raw cache building: had you just entered a new folder of raws or did you do a "rebuild"?

(2) I assume you opened a raw in the editor: had it been cached yet (did it take a long time to open)?

(3) How did you enter the editor: did you just double click a thumb or did you double click a print on the preview page?

(4) What happened after the message: everything look fine?

I had just opened a folder that had not previously had a cache made.

Yes it was a CR2 file. I don't think it had been cached, it was slow opening in the editor.

I double clicked the thumb.

Everything looked fine and the cache seemed to start building again. I'm a little vague about what happened then ut I think I closed Q-U and re-opened; no problems there.

I'll try to reproduce it,  clear the filter and re-build the cache

I managed to repeat the error with the same sequence and took more notice of what happened.
Also I remembered all of my actions near the beginning of the process.
After the thumbs had built, I refined the raw just after the cache had started to build. As soon as the thumb was visible again, I double clicked it to open the editor.
All as before 1, 2 & 3.

I clicked OK to clear the message but the activity hour glass was visible, after an interval of about 30 seconds I clicked on a blank space on the Q-U screen & it stopped.
The cache did not start re-building.

When I got the error the cache had already been built the day before for the folder. One time when it happened The busy circle thing was spinning for about a minute or two and I was clicking and trying various different things to get out of editor mode. I got out and the busy circle was still spinning and I started clicking on things and after about 30 seconds it stopped and everything was normal. The last time it happened similar, except when I got back to the main window my image was not showing on the print page (it was blank) and my thumbs weren't showing in the browser. I then selected undo from the menu bar and my correctly cropped image showed up on the print page and my thumb nails were back in the browser and everything was fine but the whole interruption took about 3 - 5 minutes to resolve.

Cool and I just installed the 115 trial  :D, a few days left to play with the trial (sadly work has slowed my using QU the past few days to zero) but I like what I have seen so far ;)
