Just got a problem I have not had before.

I am working on some old images on backup drives. Which can be improved with all the subsequent QI updates.

I have three drives - a small SSD, and two 1gig external HD

All works fine on the SSD and one of the external HD

When working on the other HD cannot get any edits to stick (save).

Raw refine - no WB, No ODR, etc
Same in Editor cannot make any adjustments such as crop, sel col, DFS, Curves.

Will it be a problem with the Drive?

In the words of Donald, what the hell is going on.

Jeff,
It sounds like you had a bottle of the BEST before you found this problem.

OK Information pleaase.

The flt file and the qrs file, both being edit files, stay with the image.

So, first question, what indication do you get that the filter wasn't saved?
Any error message?
What drive and folder are you in when you try to save the filter?
Is this image a copy or the one and only?

The bottle blured my thinking, a great improvement. Smiley
I came to conclusion the side car files are not updating. This would appear to be the case.
I get no error message, QI just hangs about for a few minutes, then image reverts to previous edit.
EG. Do a crop, looks ok in editor, > done > hangs about for a bit then back to original non crop.

PS Elements does not appear to have the problem, but then it is not using SideCars.

Just fired up the two drives and can create new folder on each Ok, but the one giving the trouble is just the same with QI.
The drives are quite old and are only switched on when photo editing, so actual usage is quite low.

Stuck a label "suspect" on the problem drive.

Later today I will copy a folder back to the working SSD and see what happens.

Will post back result.

Hi Jeff,
Let's boil this down.
You say you can create a folder on the suspect drive, so it can be written to.
You DO see the thumbnails on QU's main page so we know you are residing in the "Suspect drive".
What happens when you are set as above, (viewing the thumbs from a folder in Suspect Drive)?
You are sitting looking at the thumbs from SUSPECT DRIVE J:\Barbara modeling   folder.

Now turn off the power to that drive!  Wait 30 seconds for cache or thumbs to stop building. What happens to the thumbs?Huh???
The thumbs disappear leaving only the template thumb.
What do you get?

Just had another fiddle with SUSPECT DRIVE J:\Barbara modeling Smiley Smiley

Switching off power gives after 60seconds - The thumbs disappear leaving only the template thumb as your screen shot.

I have repeated all the 'faults' this morning.
I copied the Folder to my internal ssd working drive and all working normally.
Copied the folder back to the external drive into a 'Folder TEST' opened up in QI and all working normally.
Back to the original Faulty Folder and get same problem - no edits saved to the side cars.

Get same problem with other old folders on external, but a recent creation last December works fine.

It looks like a corrupted and or failing drive.

Will have another exploration after din dins.

Sounds like corrupted folders.
Try making new folders with a folder name adding a 1 or an A Barbara Modeling1
Then copy the images into that one and try again.

That is the next job. Get things in order and then look into some new externals.  I must admit drives have never been defragged.

Maybe something happened that changed the write permissions in that one folder?  Try opening Notepad, type a few words, and then try to save the file in that same folder.  Does Notepad save the text file without any warning about needing admin privileges?

Thanks, we may be getting there.

Created test text file and saved to suspect folder.

No error message, but saved file does not appear in folder, try and save again and get already there,  over right?

Save to new folder under My Docs and all goes well.

So presume something wrong in the Back Up Hard Drive.

There are about 250 folders involved.

Trying to think of a "quick/best" way to get the drive in order.

I have a protable HD spare, so could possibly copy all folders to that and rename and with luck problem gone.

Will have to come back to problem tomorrow.

Hi Jeff,

It sounds as if there is a File System error - if you haven't tried it already, I suggest you run CHKDSK /r J: from the command prompt (if J is the volume name - if not substitute the correct letter).   If you're not familiar with this procedure, this link will help : https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/guide-to-using-check-disk-in-windows-vista/   It covers Windows 7, 8 and 10.

Good luck,

Glenn

Thanks for suggestion.

I will give that a try.

I Will have to shut down any minute now, we are expecting 60 to 80 mph winds shortly.
If that actually happens electric wires and trees will be be comming down.
