Title: Open Raw image speed
Post by: Fred A on July 30, 2010, 04:39:32 PM
Hi all Ultimates!  Maybe that should read, Ulti-mates!

I haven't seen any comments at all on the significant purpose of Lightning Raw.!!
After you get over the shock of having Q-U cache the raw files while it builds thumbs, and you find you are 5 minutes older, has anyone seen or tried the fruits of the Lightning Raw tree?

I have three test images.
1) a Raw from my 20D 7.1 megabytes
2) a Raw from a Nikon D300  26 megabytes
3) a Raw from a Lumix GH1  14.4 megabytes.

In Studio, on my quad core machine, the 20 D takes 8 seconds to open a raw file in the (batch editor screen) Image editor.
The GH1 takes 10 seconds to open the raw file in the editor screen.
The NEF from the Nikon D300 takes 15 seconds to open.
That's one file!!

Using Ultimate,
Any raw file opens into the image editor screen in under 1.5 seconds.
So when I am working with 20 images in the queue, and I click NEXT, the next image is right there, no waiting.

Slide show in Ultimate, full screen views, comparator split screens, all instantaneous.

This is some slick workflow!

Fred

Hard drive cost?
I don't get the question, sorry.
I just had to replace a defective hard drive a few days ago, so I know they are very cheap per gigabyte.
Got a 320 for 49.95
