Every time I place an image on the layout it is all pixelated and I have tried several photos now and it says it is 387 PPI which is good so this is not so good.

Also is there a way to rotate the photo before I place it on the layout?

I have the ultimate demo to see how Qimage works so any help would be appreciated.

Hi Mark. Welcome.

We do need a lot more information from you in order to simulate what you are doing.
The location of where you place your image is usually the Print view screen.  (For us old folks, a layout is reserved for a premade template.)
So I will assume you placed an image into the queue and you see it in the print view panel. That's where it says, 387  ppi.

Let's tackle the pixel issue first. Rotating is easy.

Origin of the image? Raw or Tif or JPG, and from what source......camera?
Did you run it through another program before it got to QU?
What is the resolution of the image?
Do you get the same issue on all your images?

If you right click on a the thumbnail, and select Image examiner, what do you see at 100 and 200% magnification?
OK Let's see if we can figure this out.

Fred's approach is methodical and will make sure we identify exactly what is happening, but...

I'm going to jump to some conclusions and see if my assumptions can get us directly to the solution.  First, I'll assume that you are referring to the live view of the page in the center of the main window.  That is a draft view where thumbnails are used to produce page previews.  If you have a large view there, the preview can look a little rough: that's just because it is a quick view to judge print placement.  But to get the most of that view, click "Edit", "Preferences", "Thumb Quality", and set it to "Best".  After that, click "View", "Rebuild Thumbs" so that the thumbs (in your current folder) rebuild at best quality.  That will give you the highest resolution possible on that live view.

Beyond that, you can click the "Edit Page" button below that live view to enter the full page editor.  From there, you can click the "HQ Preview" button on the right.  That will give you a full resolution view of the printed page.  You can work with the quick editing tools and when you get your prints arranged how you like, you can click that "HQ Preview" button to refine the page so that it loads full resolution print previews.

I think one (or both) of the above is probably what you are looking for based on your post.

1). The image that is all pixelated is from a Pentax K-1 in dng and jpg format however photos from my Canon 1DX and MKIII in dng or jpg appear ok so I will assume its the Pentax? I brought the photos in from the directory not from LR which I will do when I purchase Qimage.

2). I know you can rotate the photo while on the layout but is there a way to rotate the photo before I drag it onto the layout?

3). Also is there a way to lay a 8 1/2 x11 sheet with diff sizes on it and then save it as a template for future use?

Hello,
Can I assume that you followed Mike's suggestion (above) and made sure that "Best" quality thumb was selected?

or Mike's alternate.... to go into Page editor and click the HQ button. Does that clear it up?

... and the answer to the above here is.... looks fine, or very pixelated.

On the thumb rotate question, it would be helpful if you would explain what you want to do.
The thumbs are built based on resolution. If the resolution is greater in the vertical plane, the the thumb will look like a portrait orientation.
There is never a need to rotate a thumb.
Instead, you can lock the image orientation using the padlock icon at the bottom, see screen snap 056.
When you add the image to the queue, it will lock the orientation to match the thumbnail. It tells Qimage, hey don't rotate the image to save paper.
With Padlock on... see screen snap 057.
You can also see in 056, that you can orient the page too to portrait or landscape. Between all those options, you can have what you wish.

Using the last thumbnail as if it was an image (it is a template), set your sizes and orientations on the 8.5 x 11 sheet.
Then SAVE using the save button top left corner. When the box opens, click the "L" button for Layout, give it a name, and save. Snap 058
You recall it from the Print tab / Custom button, Layout

Ok, now a favor from you.
Assuming you have a problem with the Pentax images, could you possibly send one to me?
You can use the free WE TRANSFER on line service, and send to my email address.  wathree.ssz@verizon.net
Thank you,
Fred

Hi,
Going back to this question and in addition to what Fred has said:
Quote

Sometimes, if I take a photo with the camera held at an odd angle, the image orientation is not what I intended so it's necessary to edit the image and rotate it in QU (double click thumb to open the editor). QU makes non-destructive image edits with a "filter". There are some pre-sets for rotation and the easiest way to apply one is to right click the thumb and choose from the context menu "Pre-defined filter". This will open the list where all standard filters are prefixed with {Q}. See screen shot attached.

Re. Templates, there's a learning video here https://www.youtube.com/embed/1TjdBbj-r2E

I backup Fred's request to send a sample image to him - he can then independently see what happens, pixelated or not pixelated. If the former he can get Mike to examine the image in detail to see why.

I understand now about the thumb in that any rotation must be done on the layout not the thumb so that clears that up as well as creating a template. Thanks
