Is it possible to do this, tried but the resulting image is 8 bit.

The entire printing pipeline in Windows is 8 bit/channel whether printing to printer or file.  Qimage does simulated 16 bit printing, however, which dithers between 8 bit values so the output will be indistinguishable from true 16 bit printing.
