Title: Some questions about about raw and thumbs
Post by: MelW on July 30, 2010, 05:04:39 PM
I know that I have seen both of these addressed, but now can't find them.  When I launched QU the first time, it asked me a question about rebuilding thumbs - was this all thumbs or just the raw thumbs? How much additional space will be needed? Secondly, where can I find a concise summary of what QU does with raw files that Studio does not do, and what this means in terms of time and storage space.  Thanks much.

Q/Ultimate will rebuild all the thumbs because it has a higher quality thumb to offer. The thumbs that are not raw are built in a blink of they eye.
The thumbs for the raw files need extra time (one time only) to create and store a cached copy of the raw file.
The size of this cached copy is determined by the type of raw and the size / resolution of the raw file.

After the cached copies are created, the opening and closing, and adjusting, slide shows, full screen, image editor, comparator screen; all accesses of the raw image, are lightning fast.

There should be no space problem unless you keep 50,000 Raws on your hard drive, and Ultimate is going to cache them all.
Time to get more external space.  ;D.

Hope some of this helps.

Thanks Fred - as usual, you are pretty much on point, and in fact additional storage is one  of the items on my agenda.  But one other question - other than the speed with the cached raw, do I have additional functionality with QU that I dont' have with Studio? I(I'm purchasing QU anyway - but just want to fully understand this)

Right at the top, there's a more functional white balance tool in the Raw Refine, including an eye dropper and a slider for you to tweak and set to your taste.
It contains EXIF data between file transfers and file creations.
This is just the tip of the iceberg.  Besides a faster more user friendly interface, I can assure you, although I am sworn to secrecy, there are loads of NEW features and tools to come, and very soon!!

Well of course - that's what I know I will really be buying - so even if QU and Studio had the exact same functionality right now, I would still buy QU.  I look back at what I first bought when I purchased Qimage 7 or 8 years ago, and all the functionality that Mike has added since - for free.  Can't wait to see what's coming here.
