When re-naming files, is there any way of turning off the strobe effect that has been introduced ("Updating links" flashes on and off during the renaming process; the top bar of the window also flashes)?

No strobe effect here.  When I rename a file, I see the "Updating Links" message momentarily, but that's all.  I suspect it may have something to do with the video card/driver.

I'm renaming hundreds of files, so I get that momentary message for each file, which produces quite an unsettling effect.

Are you doing them all at once: using auto-rename?
