Is there any way I can change the thumbnails to a list as I could do I QStudio? The thumbs take up way too much screen space and are a distraction. I can live with them but can't like 'em.

Sure,
Go to EDIT Preferences, and select Thumbs, ON/OFF Turn them off.
What is it you don't like about the thumbs.?
You can also change the size of the thumbs. Edit Preferences, Thumb Size. You have 4 sizes, the smallest says TINY.
Also you can adjust the vertical separator bar between the thumbnail section and the right side section where the preview panel resides.
Just grab that vertical bar with your mouse.

Hope something helps.

No.  I didn't see any need to carry that feature forward as it is so rarely used (basically only when doing diagnostics).  Qimage Ultimate is a photo batching app and quite honestly, when working with photos I don't see the need to work with files you can't see.  You could always change the thumbnail size to the minimum size so you can display more.  Some of the new UI features in Qimage Ultimate depend on thumbnails being visible: things like the "+" that you use to add images to the queue and that turns green when that photos is already in the queue, etc.

What Fred mentions above is also a diagnostic mode: it prevents the thumbnails from showing if you are having trouble with them or you don't want to wait for them to load, but the thumbnail slates still show because they are an integral part of the UI now.

Regards,
Mike

Answer to Fred and comment to Mike. The whole name of the file is way more important to me than a thumbnail of it. I don't use the program as a batch editor; I, and a lot of people I know, use it as an image processor. Actually, its main function in my work flow (and I use it about 6 hours every day) is as a lay out tool and as an easy way to assign paper profiles to images I'm reproducing. It's valuable to me because it takes RGB profiles while my other image processor, PosterPrint($4,000+)wants only CMYK which are difficult if not impossible to make for an n channel printer(in my case a 12 channel printer).

The reason I switched to Ultimate is I've never been able to get Studio to print really large files without omitting a block of data. Ultimate doesn't seem, as yet, to have that problem. The other reason is I think Qimage is worth 90 bucks a year. I'll probably go back to Studio for the bulk of my work and turn to Ultimate for the occasional large file.

FWIW I have never used the thumbnails in either Qimage or, later, Qimage Studio. All I'm interested in is the name of the file (and I need the whole name frequently). The thumbnail is useless; I know what the image looks like. I guess i could make the thumbnails big enough to include the complete name. Finally, the thumbs just look klutzy to me; it doesn't seem like a big deal to be able to turn them off but I don't have a clue about programing. Every other piece of software I use uses file names. In my case, file names convey information that a thumb would never be able to; for example a subtle change in color in an area of a reproduction.

It's difficult to complain about a program that's so useful and so inexpensive and I won't.

I forgot to mention that no image appears in my thumbnail boxes anyway; I guess they're too large, around 120mb on average, so the whole thing is a useless feature for me.

120MB is small.  If no images appear, maybe you have the thumbnails turned off from a previous install?  Check Edit, Preferences, Thumbs off/on, and make sure they are turned on.  If so, and you never get thumbnails, does it say "loading" on the thumbnails?  You may have a corrupted image or images that is preventing it from proceeding.
