the printer and Qimage are working on the new connection but in the setup installation the computer added the printer to devices and printers as 7900 'copy'. I was too busy to get a chance to try it out but will Qimage still recognize all my saved jobs and setups that were saved when the printer was originally named  'Epson7900' as the  default name or are they all hosed?
Can I and should I rename the printer to the original name (drop "copy"), and delete the original printer installation in Windoze?
Thanks in advance,
David

David,
In my experience..... it is not a good idea to try to edit the prt files and remove the COPY1
I think there are two options.
Depending on how many printer setups  and JOBS you have saved, you can either make a setup on screen and resave them one at a time, or probably much better to uninstall the COPY1 driver.
Usually when a driver installs as COPY1, it means it was installed twice without removing the first install.
Try that first.
Providing that the driver remains under it's original name.

If that original driver was uninstalled after the COPY1 was installed, then I would delete the drivers, and reinstall. Takes 5 minutes!

"If that original driver was uninstalled after the COPY1 was installed, then I would delete the drivers, and reinstall. Takes 5 minutes!" Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Cry

Fred,
After removing both printers and trying to reinstall the original driver (not copy1)the computer kept on putting copy 1 back on.
Finally rebooted at each step and managed to remove the copy reinstall the original old version of the driver. Roll Eyes
tried to print and Qimage processed the file brought up the driver and ...no response from the printer.Downloaded the latest driver and finally figured out how to install it in Win7 Pro -in  the control panel -install a printer or device -reinstalled the printer a second time and found the wizard to put the new driver in,  and it prints from Qimage now...
BUT... I have lost the printer status monitor display that used to pop up and stay up untill the printer was shut off.I no longer see Ink levels etc.
I cannot seem to find an answer how to activate it again.
I seem to recall a check box somewhere but cannnot find that either.Win7 Pro- Epson 7900
When I try to show the satus monitor from any of the right click menus It displays a big ? and is evidently not connecting to the printer even though the driver now prints through Qimage.
sorry a little long winded here

Any thoughts,
As always thanks in advance.

Hi David,

If you go to print (not necessarily in qi), and open the printer driver properties tab, do you get the status monitor - e.g. ink levels etc. showing there? If not, it may be you've installed a windows generic print driver, and not one from Epson. I've not got your printer, but I did find it not too straightforward to get the right driver loaded for my printer.

Best wishes,

Ray,Thanks for the suggestion but it is the Epson Driver.

I have been doing some more digging around. In the manual it indicates that on some network connections it will not show ink levels, but it did work before I switched drivers. The problem is that not only doesn't show ink levels but whole status monitor also doesn't pop up as before.I did manage to find the location of where the check box to show it is located (in a most inconspicuous place)  Roll Eyes, so maybe it is disabled there,  and I have also read that it requires bidirectional communication on the port so maybe the port is not configured correctly, or I need to put it on yet a different port and go through the un-install proceedure again and manually install printer with the latest driver on a different TCP/IP address Roll Eyes.
Will have to check everything tomorrow at the store.

Thanks Fred I found it but and with the current driver it is showing again..

BUT as before Qimage processsed the file and the printer just sat and didn't do a thing  Cry

Removed the printer configured it back on the same port and now it prints again but the status monitor doeesn't show again Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes
I give up at least the printer is printing and it appears Qimage recognizes my saved settings which was my initial goal I now have 1 printer with the correct name (no 'copy') and the heck with the status monitor!

I can check ink the long way around through the utility tab, and if I have to cancel a job I can do that directly on the printer.
My frustration level is at peak, and it just isn't worth the wasted time just to get the status monitor to pop up.
Thanks for the advice,
David

If I recall, you can download and reinstall the Status Monitor without  the driver.
That wont disturb the working driver connected to teh assigned pot, but might refresh the status monitor.

I'm about as frustrated as I can get.
I somehow got it going again and then the printer would not print from QI again.I went to the spooled jobs and there is a choice toprint offline which I did and the printer kicked in and printed.Went back to QI and both the stsus monitor and the printer worked as they should.
Turned off the computer went to print and Q told me the printer was not ready though it was. Status monitor shows the big red ? again. I seem to be going around in circles.

Q shows the printer on the correct port, I've made sure I dont have duplicate copies of the driver, and that the port is configured for bidirectional data, and i am really too afraid of going into the registry and messing around in there.
I guess I'll call Epson tech help tomorrow and see if they can tell me what's wrong ,but I know already they will say they don't offer support for third party apps. Cry Cry

Hi David,

try 1) turning off computer and printer. Then power up printer, wait a while, then power up computer. Wait a minute or so, and try printing something from notepad, say. (no need to fuss around with qi, afaik its purely a network coms problem you have.)

If you don't get the status monitor, and everything is set up for you to have it showing in the driver then try

2) turning off computer and printer. Then power up computer wait a while, then power up printer. Wait a minute or so, and try printing something from notepad, say.

3) try pinging the printer address. If it is a network device, then I think it should have, in effect, it's own 'web page' which will allow you to adjust various options concerned with the network connection. You may need to mess around with ip addresses, and the like.

Have fun. You're in a good place, since you will come up with a solution, and you can tell us how you did it.

fwiw in a former life, I used to 'fix stuff' on various sites. It was quite surprising how often that merely placing a 2lb claw hammer on the table in front of the errant equipment, would get it all working again.   Huh?

Best wishes,

Thanks Ray,

FWIW I was a camera tech in another life and  we used to "get a bigger hammer" if the first didn't work Wink
I am begining to think it is indeed a comm problem, I know it's not Qimage. Wink
It does appear to be  related to the off -on sequence of the printer -computer, and whether or not Q is running when I turn on the printer.
One time it is recognized, and the next not. The weird part is sometimes both the status monitor and printing from Q work flawlessly, and the next time the status monitor works and printing doesn't, and then visa versa Roll Eyes
When the  status monitor tries to query the printer from the icon on the system tray it doesn't work either.
I am somewhat familiar with, and have gone into all the menus in all the places there is an ability to change or check settings to no avail.I have completely deleted all the Epson files and driver and reinstalled -to no avail.
Epson has a Network utility but I didn't think I need it since I am not technically on a network,
but just using a network switch to connect and share the ethernet port on the computer. I haven't even gone as far a connecting the 9890 yet, which was the reason for using the ethernet switch to begin with since they do nor recommend connecting USB over 6'.  I am trying to weed out the existing problem first.

I have not tried from any other app, so I will try and print from Photoshop and see what happens
Thanks again, David

PING Huh?

Hi David,

It's a command line thing...

Simplest way would be to go to a dos command prompt (within windows 7 just type cmd from the start menu/search and then right click and choose RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR (if you aren't already).

then type in PING /? at the prompt to give you the options. You will need the url of the printer, or its network name.

You should get something llike this -
www.yertiz.com/pic0608/Clipboard.jpg

Just something else for you to get into   Sad.

Why not try it on a longer usb cable, or get an extender?

Best wishes,

After way too many wasted hours, and way too much frustration ,I returned the Ethernet switch and cables, purchased a powered USB hub, took 5 minutes to remove the printer from the control panel
I plugged in a heavily shielded USB cable that I had spliced together from 2- 6' unused Microtek scanner supplied cables,
turned on the printer and the computer and Presto wiz bang -instant gratification!!! Grin
The 7900 printer works flawlessly  through Qimage as before , with no indication of any loss of quality whatsoever on the long cable. All I have to do now is load the carts in the 9890 and 'plug-n-play' it in.

I am somewhat familiar with general computer usage as I imagine most people are, and have solved many issues on my own, but once it goes beyond a certain level I'm in the dark.   It's a real love - hate relationship Roll Eyes

Thanks to all for your advice and help!
