Thanks Terry,

Fine until point 5.

I have an image on page two that I want to use.

I select it with CTL X

I move to page one which is in Freehand mode - or isn't it.

How do I place my image at (a) a chosen place on page one?

What do I click and with what instruction?

No, must be in Optimal or similar, NOT Freehand.

Select an image on page 1, right click and choose paste before (ctrl U) or Paste after (ctrl V) as appropriate.
Small changes can be made in the queue, (page preview) with move up or down from the RMB menu.

Thanks Terry,

My problem seems to be the use of Compact and not Optimal. I can see it working now.

I also see that if I drag an image to another part of the page the page automatically changes to Freehand. I don't suppose that matters but I thought it worth noting if this thread becomes any use to anyone else.

That is a standard feature and logical. Do any final tweaking of position last.
