Forgive me if this has been answered. My printer is an HP z6100. If I use the HP print utility the printer will cut the print about 3/8 of an inch (automatically) after the print. In Ultimate I have to set the layout to whatever I want to cutoff the print after. Is there somewhere to set Ultimate  to set this? I know the printer will do it just need to find where the setting is.

Thanks in advance. If you need any more info I will be following this thread.

Marion,
The place that you can set in Qimage to cut off after the print, is located :
The right click menu when mouse is hovering over the upper right preview panel. It's about 3/4 down in the list.
It's called, Remove white space at the bottom of the page"

When you click it, instructions pop out for you.

Thanks Fred,
Do I have to check this every time I print or is it a check it once and forget it?

I applied the remove white space and did a quick print but it didn't remove the white space. Any suggestions?

Ok, we have to back that truck up as the man said on "Home Improvement"
Need information.
1) What size roll paper? What size page is described?  What size print goes on the page?

2) Your printer is an HP Z series...6100.
I am not saying that I know of a problem, but I am saying that the Z series track record for buggy drivers is well know and documented, and the HP Z series drivers do not follow conventional procedures.

So I am hoping when Mike Chaney stops by for a look, he will be better able to answer.

Sorry for the "no help"

It does remove the white space, but let's be sure that the driver is obeying the signals.  Look at your paper size right before you tell it to remove the white space.  Then use that feature and see if the paper size (length) changes.  If not, the driver just isn't "listening".  If it does, then it's working and your print should be the length specified above the preview page.  Keep in mind that if you have more than one page, it can only set the paper length as short as the longest page: that is... the page that has the print that ends the farthest down the page.

Beep Beep Beep. backing up. LOL

I have a roll of 36x100 on the printer. The page size I used to experiment was 36x12 with an 8x10 print. I use Ultimate to print just fine with no problems. I just wanted to know how to cut the print after printing. For example. My layout size is 36x12. The 8x10 print will have 2 inches of white after the print and cut. If I print from the HP print utility it will print the 8x10 print and cut it 3/8 on  an inch after printing. I just wanted to do this in Ultimate.

Mike,
Yes it does change the layout size after applying the white space. Only problem is it cuts off prints that are on the layout. For example I had a 36x27 layout with 6 8x10's. After applying it change the layout to 36x12 where it should have been around 36x17

Reading the thread subject line I thought this could be a HP Z user in trouble. It is.

When Mike made this Qimage feature I checked it with the Z3200, it did work with the PS3 driver more or less but not at all with the PCL3 driver if I recall it correctly.

It is not like the auto trimming you will find in RIPs or HP Utility.

I'm using the HPGL2 drivers if that makes any difference.

Marion,

I am not that familiar with the Z6100/6200 models but it must be the Z6100-PS version you have given the features you mention. The Z3200-PS that I have comes with the PS3, HPGL-2 and you can also use the PCL3 driver with it. I never print from HP's Printer Utility but I guess it uses the PS3 driver actually. I know the HPGL-2 driver is activated but I never encountered a driver with that name, I thought it was just part of the other drivers. The HPGL-2 driver does improve the total print length for the PCL3 driver for example, my plain Z3100 does not go beyond 3 meters length, the Z3200-PS does. Correct me if I am wrong.

What would be interesting though more complex is using Qimage's image nesting etc in Print To File and print the assembled print page image through HP Print Utility. You would need a precise control on image/print resolutions and on the color management but Print Utility should cut right after the loaded Qimage Tiff.

Ernst,
I'm trying to print to file. After I save the specs to print to file it isn't giving me the option to where my print to file is. Where can I find this file?

Thanks for the direction.

Marion,

Did you actually hit the printer icon to print, the one in the middle of the three printer icons?
You will in default find the file in the images file you opened to set the images in the print queue, with a name with a Q suffix. It should appear among the thumbnails of that file in the Qimage filer window, that one refreshes automatically in this case.

I did not expect that you went directly for that complex method so to check on some aspects: I would use Qimage's color management, extrapolation, print sharpening etc and make little use of HP's driver settings if possible. That means you should set Print to File at either 300 PPI or 600 PPI, Tiff, use the printer settings options and then Qimage color management on. Print to file size that it fits economically within the Z6100 roll width without print margins. HP Printer Utility without any color management done to the file (I even do not know whether that is possible) and a print quality setting that asks for either 300 or 600 PPI, print size at 100%, 1:1, original size, whatever they use in terminology. There are a lot of things that can go wrong that way. You could direct the Qimage Print to File saving to a place where HP Printer Utility normally expect files.

I prefer to keep the Qimage route and forget about the auto trimming function. When the images are nested on a larger print page I right click on the print page preview window and select Edit print page to see what could be trimmed at the underside and adjust the print page size in the driver accordingly. True that is also taking time but a safer route.

All written down from memory or imagination (Z6100) I can not check this right now.

Thanks again Ernst.  I agree it is much easier just to keep what I'm doing and use the Qimage printing options rather than go through the  print to file route.

I'm happy with what I'm getting now and will keep the print flow I'm using now.

Thank you so much for your help.
