HP Z3200-PS, Windows 7.   I am familiar with the fact that if I add a new media preset to my list of media presets that I can not trust QU job data taken from the log to repeat that job. So I reset in QU the driver data to the default after I have loaded a recalled job. I check if everything is correct, media presets correspond in both QU's and the driver's interface. Profile correctly corresponding too.

This time I added the media preset HFA Photo Rag Metallic. Calibrated, printed targets, profiled , synchronised media presets, all from HP Color Center. Job done. Changed the roll to German Etching, recalled a job from the log file.  Reset the driver in QU 2019.100 / 104  to the driver defaults, set the media preset correct, then the profile back. Mismatch between QU and driver interface on the media preset, QU says Photorag, Driver says German Etching. Correct it in QU's interface to German Etching and QU's driver icon shows something is wrong. Go there and that is correct, something is wrong. Go back and forth with different media preset settings, back to default, system power off, QU version switch but nothing helps. Only solution is taking out a custom media preset from the driver that is the least often used.

Probably Qimage does not cover as many media presets as the driver can or it counts backwards instead of forward if the media preset identity goes by numbers. I guess the answer will be non-Windows compatibility of the HP driver.

BTW,  if I reset the driver to its default in Qimage Ultimate with whatever choice, all/printer/current, I also loose my Cut Marks setting. Something that is going on for some time already.  I do not understand why that is needed in relation to the driver and it has been really annoying when the image has no straight edges on that print but is an amorphous shape free floating in white (art print). Two shapes now floating in white on an expensive paper. Have to look it up in Edit Page where the two 50x65 cm pieces sit on that sheet of 66,6 cm long by 44" roll width.

Met vriendelijke groet, Ernst

Ernst,

What you are seeing is one of many long standing bugs in the Z series drivers.  Media types in Windows are enumerated with an integer index where each media type should have a unique integer identifier and a corresponding name (string).  When you add a new media type, the driver should assign a new (unique) integer index and string and store that in the Windows driver device mode table.  In some situations, I've found that the Z series driver doesn't add the corresponding entry so your media type is actually "orphaned" (it's in the driver but the driver doesn't report it to Windows).  In other situations, I've caught the driver actually assigning the same index to two different media types, creating a conflict or... an integer media type with no corresponding string description.  That's why sometimes you'll see a number in the media type or even "Set in driver" when Qimage finds one of these driver errors.  Because the Z series media types are "editable", it is also possible to create a media type today called "Type A" and have an integer like 941 assigned to it.  Tomorrow you rearrange some stuff, delete some media types, add some new ones, and now you have a situation where the same index (941) points to a different media type called "Type B", creating issues with recalling jobs as the media type index in the job doesn't match what is now in the driver.  I've done all I can do with the error checking but unfortunately the only real solution is for HP to get their act together and finally fix the Z series driver bugs.  The media type integer is a double word so there are 4 billion to choose from.  Not sure why HP would have trouble picking a unique identifier.

Mike

After further checking, printer related settings are linked to driver settings like they are in printer setups because many are applicable to only certain media types, sizes, and driver settings.  So when you reset driver settings, that could change the paper size, color settings, quality settings, etc. and result in invalid processing settings.  So things like user-added margins, sharpening, cut marks, profile, etc. are reset to defaults as well because there is no way to be sure they'll be applicable once you reset the driver.  Some settings like cut marks may have a higher chance of being applicable but it's better to reset everything print-processing related and not make assumptions (and be consistent).  You may, for example, only use cut marks when using roll paper and when you reset the driver, it might be set to 13x19 sheets where you don't want the cut marks.

In the next version, I might just add a feature where you can hold the shift key when you click "Properties" if you want to simply open the driver with driver defaults without affecting anything else.

Hello Mike,

Could it be that you also found a solution for added media presets in the Z3200 printer/driver?  This time I added the Photorag Ultra Smooth media preset and it stays in the Z3200 driver while Qimage mentions Unlisted [270]  as the "selected" media. I assume it would work without issues in printing and I guess you added something or this must be another hickup of HP software. Never seen it before.

No, I didn't change anything there.  It's just another example of HP not following standards with respect to the driver.  When you added the media type, HP stores it in the driver but doesn't report it to Windows.  All media types supported by the driver should be enumerated to Windows so that when software querries the driver, there is a table entry for media type index 270 that lists the media name as "Photorag Ultra Smooth".  Instead, Qimage querries the driver for media type index, it sees that the media type index is 270, looks in the media types table to find the name for that index, and there is no 270 in the index(integer)|name(string) table... so it says "Unlisted".

But yes, it will work if you select that media type in the driver because all the driver needs in order to use that media type is the index (270).  The only down side is that you can't select that (270) media type from the "Media Type" dropdown in the Qimage UI because the driver doesn't list it: you have to select it via "Properties" in the driver.

Regards,
Mike
