I sometimes use my D300 with Nikon Camera Control Pro. (Great now it works with LiveView!).

The drawback is that you need a long USB cable. Does anyone know if a "wireless link" that can bridge the gap between two USB devices exists?

This article talks about a couple of options:

I haven't tried either the Nikon or the Cables Unlimited solutions but the page does mention the D300.  Beware of the short range though.

You might also look into the D-Link or Link Sys Gigabit N routers.  They have a Share Point USB connection built in.
Linksys:  http://tinyurl.com/mqcuzw

D-Link:   http://www.dlink.com/products/?pid=530

I have the D-Link DIR-655, just plugin a printer or  memory stick and you can share it all over the network, including wireless at n speed.

http://www.eye.fi/overview/ Makes wireless SD cards. Some people are having sucess using them in cameras that require compact flash.  I for on have tried an SD card on my D200 (which uses compact flash) using a compact flash adapter which stuck out of the camera.  It worked, so I suspect that eye.fi may be able to be used in DSLR's but I think the transfer might be a tad slow. Also the eyefi only does jpgs.

If you want to pop the $750 for a WT-4a, the D300 will transfer by WiFi a/b/g--LiveView and all.
