Would it be possible to add an option that would allow filenaming using the Canon embedded image sequence? This would only be of value to 1D Mark II (and maybe Mark I) owners, but it is a nice feature to easily ensure no duplicate file names. DownloaderPro has this feature. This would be the feature to make me swith to FlashPipe.

It'd be of more use to more people if I could do something similar without having to resort to Canon proprietary tags.  I want to understand how is this any better than just renaming by date and time?  The only thing I can think of is rapid shooting and in that case I could just add the ability to use hundredths of a second.  Wouldn't that accomplish something similar?

FlashPipe can already produce its own sequence number based on date/time such as 090909-200201.  That has the advantage that you can see the date and time without even opening the file.  Of course, if you need more resolution than seconds, I could add two more digits.

Are you talking about the actual frame number that the camera has shot?  Nikons keep track of total frames fired and embeds it in each EXIF also.

I was talking about the cummulative shot number; equal to the actual number of shutter actuations.

Yes, we are on the same track.  It is not just Canon.  Nikon records that also.  They started that back in the pro film cameras though it didn't show up to us.

There is another way to create folders that we use in Photo Mechanic--the serial number.  Then, with a user created script it fills in part of the IPTC since it knows what photog shot it.

My humble Canon 350D records what I think is the cumulative shot number, up to 9,999 that is, then it starts again. My camera is set to do that rather than go back to zero every time the card is cleared or re-formatted.
Is that what you mean?
I used to re-number in Qimage with "Date_Old file name", now with FP it's "Date_Numeric part of file name" so the cumulative shot number is included. Am I missing something here or has jrh missed that the "Numeric part of file name" option is now available?

The 1D Mark II series of cameras records the number of shutter actuations in the shot data. This value is cummulative, so, for example,  when the shot count of a new camera reaches 9999 and rolls over the shutter count would be 10000, 10001, etc.

Some programs access this data (Breezebrowser Pro and Downloade Pro are two that I know) and it is a good way of easily ensuring that no two shots get the same ID.

The date with hundredths of a second accomplishes this as well, which is why I switched to Flashpipe.

Do an extended EXIF read (use EXIF Data or something) and see if it showing up on your model.  The manufacturers use the info when servicing cameras because it gives them a failure rate.

The data is consecutive for EVERY time you trigger the shutter.  Could be 50, 60 or 100K!
