Title: problems with ibm Microdrive 4gb cf card
Post by: mackem on November 05, 2009, 07:00:12 AM
Flashpipe starts the copy but quits when it gets to the second date range on the card and never gets to the move that is also scheduled
i am using a Lexar Professional UDMA Dual-Slot USB Reader
i have upgraded my pc from xp to win 7 and installed flashpipe, acronis true image 2009 and lightroom 2.3
This issue may not be related to flashpipe as i am also having crashes with lightroom and win 7
To date i have tried to resolve via Microsoft problem resolve pop up window but it searches and does not resolve the problem.
Flashpipe just quits during the transfer so i restart it and it quits again i think at the same point but am not certain
thank in advance for any help you can offer

Could be a lot of reasons for that unfortunately, including some issue with the Microdrive itself or with the Windows driver that reads it.  The only cause that you can actually control is a problem related to a virus scanner: sometimes they can cause issues as they try to read the files that FlashPipe is copying/moving.  Try temporarily disabling any antivirus/anti-malware software to see if that solves the problem.

Hi Mike
i do not yet have any antivirus installed and am running win 7 premium, i do not know it well enough to know if it is running any antivirus incorporated into the Os
My system is not very stable,i tried to uninstall the Acronis 2009 software however after that i could not restart the computer and eventually windows showed a screen to fix the problem upon startup first i tested my memory it said i have a hardware problem that would show when it reboots windows however it did not show the problem report and now my install has gone back to a state prior to the activation
Maybe it is fixed now i will try to reactivate and reload drivers
i think the card is ok. it is not a card i would ever use for anything serious but i have some  images i would like to get of it. As the Flashpipe copy does not finish all images should be still on the card correct?
I suspect this problem isn't a  flashpipe issue i will report back if i can get the images off the card
thanks Martin

Well, if you did a "Move" operation, FlashPipe would have deleted all the images that successfully moved off the card (before the problem occurred).  But one thing's for sure, FlashPipe will never delete the originals from the card until it has verified that the file(s) copied properly, so whatever it didn't move due to the problem will still be on the card.

If you did an upgrade intead of a clean install, you may have garbage out there interfering with you.  Just a possibility.

However, one reason I got away from Lexar is they do not always follow the CF protocol totally.  They have always had some proprietary things going on.  You might contact their tech support also.

Well i finally got things sorted out although it is not the best solution
i ditched win 7 and reinstalled win xp and the system is stable now once in xp i could install flashpipe and get the remaining images from the card without flashpipe quitting or windows blue screen appearing
Seth i did do the upgrade as i was running windows xp and my copy of win 7 is an upgrade copy, the problem is related to the quad processor and my motherboard asus p5w dh deluxe, last i checked asus hasn't any drivers for win 7 although win 7 seemed to install without needing any. i was also getting the blue screen without the lexar udma reader attached to the computer.
many thanks for the advice  and hopefully i will be able to win 7 running in the new year

Pretty wierd.  Asus is a pretty good company (nowadays) and usually stays on top of things.

If you just want to mess with your system, here is how do do a full install using an upgrade package for Win 7: http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/clean_install_upgrade_media.asp (http://www.winsupersite.com/win7/clean_install_upgrade_media.asp)

Seth...
I have the upgrade package for W7, but did a full install. They don't tell you, but it's all on the DVDs (2) that come in the box.
Just insert the DVD into the drive and reboot the system.

You will get the screen that asks, Upgrade or full install?

Did it three times, using either disk; one is 32 bit disk, the other is 64 bit disk.

Thanks very much lads, i did a full install with windows xp upgrade disk i tried  to on win 7 but was not successful not sure why but i will check out the link and that is the way i will try next time
i think the problem may have been with the quad processor but everything is stable in win xp
i had done a backup of my system with trueimage 2009 but alas it was corrupt so a tough lesson learnt there too, i am almost done installing my apps so i will stay with xp till after the new year and try win 7 again

Just for screwing around purposes (I have full Acronis images of everyhing) when I get ready to dump RC I will do a full install.  But, I am going to try it to a stick since I CAN boot from USB.  There's security--if it works.

Fred-

Apparently, M$ tried to stop all that with Vista and increase the problem with Win 7.  They got a lot of heat so they may have updated the release.

The problem with install and re-install and re-install is the activation it does--unless you block it  ;D  ;D  ;D  ::)

Adobe left a gaping hole with their CS4 series stuff so it's easy to keep re-installing without having to call them over and over.  Adobe wouldn't be bad if they didn't put you on "ignore" for 20-30 minutes.

I use Acronis True Image Home and have never had a problem; XP to external Firewire HD, XP to Network HD and Vista to Network HD. :)
