I have had to do a deleted images recovery.

I used Recuva (the only recovery program that worked ie did the job)

The recovered files are listed at tiff of 23.2mb each.

However, when opened in Irfanview, FSviewer and Qimage they are thumbs at 160 x 120 res  - useless.
But open them in PSElements 7 and they open in the Raw Editor as normal, if leave them unedited and save as .dng files they will open in all the other programs.

I have run a file through PhotoMe and it shows  as 160 x 120

If I rename the file in Win Explorer and give it .dng extension  I end up with .dng.tiff and cannot get rid of the .tif

Ok no problem, I will run then through Elements, but it would be interesting to know why only Elements can read them

Can you try renaming to .PEF or CR2, whatever your RAW suffix was?

Loaded the file on to a file transfer site, it did it in a flash, checked and it was a thumb at 158kb :'( :'(

The files were shot in .dng

Any way, I was working on XP and tried to load the file into Elements FOUR!  and got error - unexpected end of file received.

It looks like something in the file exif.  Will have another look in Recuva prog. and see if there is something there I have selected.

Hi Jeff,

In IV go to options-property/settings. Check you have that set so it doesn't try to open embedded thumbs.

These recovery programs don't know about raw files it seems
I've had the same problem with using RecuePro. I simply changed the tiff to CR2 and all was ok. You would need to change the tiff to the raw file extension to that which matched your camera: dng from what you say.

Changing the extension was the first thing I tried, but ended up with double extension - .dng.tif and win 7 would not let me delete the .tif bit.  No doubt there is a way but I cannot find it.

I am not complaining about Recuva it did a wonderful job considering I was unaware of the deletion and carried on shooting on the same card.  In fact it recovered files going back more than two years

I've tried out RescuePro again, a later version and it found CR2 raw files with the correct extension.
I suspect if you ask your recovery program to recover "photos", it may not recognize raw extensions and therefore extract the embedded jpeg's, including any thumbs. Try recovering just "files" if that is possible.
I've also tried re-naming a .CR2 file to .tiff and back again, no problem. W7 asks if you really want to do that and I said yes.

Out for most of today.

I will give the renaming prog a try, I suspect I have something set in win7 to prevent extension changing.

I think Recuva recovered raw files, they are very soft and respond just like raw files also correct file size.

I have passed them all through Elem7, then QIU so have got away lightly.
