91  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Q image crashes each time I launch it under Windows 7 on: August 23, 2011, 12:43:21 PM
Hi Mack,

I'm not sure idf this may be the problem/solution, but a friend just mentioned a problem he had with w7 and his epson printer - not connected with QI. It seems epson do not issue a driver for w7 for his printer, but w7 has an inbuilt one. However the w7 driver finds the epson 'status monitor', and that does not work either, so the result is the printer does  not print, and there is no error message displayed. Checking the running tasks shows the cause of the problem, iirc. The solution for him was to remove the epson status monitor program, then the w7 printer driver runs OK, it carries on if it doesn't find the status monitor program. He installed the Russian ss monitor program, (I've mentioned this elsewhere, http://www.ssclg.com/epsone.shtml - for him it works fine under w7) so he can still see the ink remaining, etc.

I can't help you any further with these details, since I have no problems with QI myself, but then I do not use ultimate or w7. Maybe you just need to remove the old status monitor program for your printer.

Best wishes,

Ray
92  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Does QI ultimate accept pictures in Prophoto RGB ? instead of Adobe RGB on: August 21, 2011, 07:28:04 AM
Hi Mack,

Generally, if you have an adobe rgb profile assigned to a cs5 image, it looks fine on the screen with cs5, however, if you save the image without converting it, then when viewed outside of cs5 an srgb space may be used, giving a reddish tinge to the image.

I expect you are not converting the colour spaces correctly within cs5. Many of the cs5 functions only work on 8 bit per channel images.

94  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: How to use a template when using long roll paper on: August 10, 2011, 09:44:36 PM
Hi Johny,

The whole reason for qi is volume printing. However, it starts off as a steep learning curve, since the interface is different than you may expect, in particular if you come from, say. an adobe type background. Stick with it, but you need to be very specific in stating your problems. Fred has the patience of Job, but it helps if you can explain exactly what you are trying to do. Now you have mentioned a paper size of 16 by 70, before it was 16 by 10 template and roll paper, iirc. Maybe treating it as separate pages of 16 by 10 is the way to go.

You will learn by experimenting, and to save ink and paper in testing out the various methods, scale it all down when it comes to layouts - e.g template of a couple of images, say two by one, on a roll of paper six inches long/whatever. Once you've cracked it, you can save the job, as you know, so you need not think to much when you recall the job. I think you will search in vain to find a printing prog. as good as qi.

Ray

I think what the op is concerned with, is that qimage (at least studio) does not handle images with 32bit per colour channel, which is what many folk use prophoto for - to get smooth tone transitions if you are pushing the colours around. Within adobe photoshop, you can set prophotorgb to 8, 16, 32 bits per channel, and view and edit in any of those modes. Now when set to 16 ( or 8 ) bits per channel, qi handles the image OK, but I am not sure if in fact if qi 'translates' 16 to 8bit for editing, as it does for printing.

Hi Henk,

Are you in fact saying that a soft proofed image in Qimage does not look the same as the same image soft proofed in CS5?

97  Mike's Software / Profile Prism / Re: Some questions about printer profiling. on: August 06, 2011, 01:37:10 PM
Hi Greg,

It seems the profile you've got is OK. You have to ensure when you print that you use the exact same paper (size does not matter), and the same printer/paper/ink settings as for the profile. Of course, the print will not look like your screen image, unless you have a fully calibrated work flow. You can edit the profiles generated by profile prism, but If it is the same test image as used on the older versions, then there is not enough natural scenery (e.g. trees, grass, sky etc.) to be able to set those colours as easily as for skin tones, imho. It will probably be simplest if you try to match the white balance of your monitor to that of your paper, generally monitors are too bright.

If you want to get picky, then take a photo of your test chart, print it, scan it in with the original test chart, then using a colour picker, (not set to single pixel) to see how the colours vary. Of course, that will show other 'errors', such as reflections, uneven lighting, camera exposure and white balance settings (but you can fiddle with those in ps),  but it eliminates most problems associated with an incorrectly set monitor. In other words, if you get the colour patches more or less to the same values, then your problem is with how your monitor is displaying the colours of your image compared to how it is printed.

(Hopefully you are not forgetting to convert your image from pro-photo or whatever, to the colour space used in printing. The image you print needs to be within the gamut of the printer, and the rendering intent set correctly - you'll have some wonderful colour changes if you get that wrong. Wink)

Best wishes,

Ray

98  Technical Discussions / Printer Media / Re: What papers for Head alignment? on: July 30, 2011, 09:30:09 PM
Hi Jamie,

I would not try it on canvas, there will be no precision. Ordinary multipurpose copier/inkjet paper will do. Although the heads should be aligned, it is unlikely to cause your problems. If you've not done so, if you can spend the time watch/listen to the link I mentioned here http://ddisoftware.com/tech/printers/print-too-dark-turn-on-another-light/ . Basically, as I've mentioned many times before - set your monitor/display white point to match your canvas.

99  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Editing IPTC data changes EXIF data on: July 29, 2011, 02:14:49 AM
referring to http://www.iptc.org/cms/site/photometadatasupportlist.html?channel=CH0101#70 and other pages on iptc.org, you can see how various software packages comply? with the so called standard. iptc have based much of what they do on what Adobe does, so of course Adobe can behave more or less as a law unto themselves, the rest have to play 'catch-up'. Sad

102  Technical Discussions / Printers / Re: Epson 7900 marking paper. on: July 24, 2011, 12:01:24 PM
Hi Jamie,

If it is crushing paper, as well as canvas, then it seems that there is something way off in the platen settings. That, combined with the excess ink you seem to have floating about suggests you should consider having the printer properly serviced. You may be able to find the service manuals on line, if you want to do it yourself, but they may require some searching. For cleaning, then a lint free cloth and ordinary tap water will be OK, but it depends on what is stuck to the rollers, if anything.

Best wishes,

Ray

103  Mike's Software / FlashPipe / Re: Date used by Flaspipe on: July 17, 2011, 12:14:01 PM
Hi Frank,

Same problem as me, but in thirty years time, I guess it won't be bothering me. Wink

If you do a web search, on say 'exif file sort' You'll find plenty of free sorting programs which will probably help to generate a meaningful name which can then be sorted by Flashpipe. You need to test them out first, on a small set of file copies, and be aware that they most likely take a long time to sort a number of images, but you may only need them the once.

I hate so called improvements like touch screens etc, you know where you are with levers, switches and buttons!

It's all marketing today, not engineering...

Some canvases are not very 'clean' to start with. Perhaps you need to spool off a length, clean off the crud, and re spool it before printing. Maybe if you just advance the paper a bit (print a separate narrow blank image), since on my printer, if I just advance the paper, it seems to persist in rewinding before printing. The  crushed strip can be positioned in the wrap region, and will not show.
