I like having soft proof and out of gamut warnings available but don't get too hung up on them. The printed output is what you hang your hat on.

That's the same test image I use. Once you have the printing sorted out, work on the monitor, not the other way 'round. Qimage is really good at preventing double profiling and other weirdness. The other day I changed papers and got the setup wrong. Qimage instantly recognized the problem and applied the necessary fixes. I wouldn't have noticed otherwise until I wasted paper.
18  Mike's Software / Profile Prism / Re: Scanner profile on: February 15, 2023, 10:16:21 PM
Thanks, I'll do a check. As I said, the scanner is quite old. It occurred to me that a profile every couple years is probably a good idea, since the florescent or sensors could change a bit. Probably less of a problem with LEDs, but they can change too, especially if the current is high.
19  Mike's Software / Profile Prism / Scanner profile on: February 15, 2023, 08:40:14 PM
Was scanning a lot of old photos for restoration and wasn't happy with the color coming off my Epson 4490 Photo (an old one). Decided to whip out my trusty Profile Prism and make a profile. Seems better. One question- the instructions say to scan the target at 300 dpi. If I then use the profile at other dpi, is there any weird thing that would make the color balance change. IOW, is there any reason to have profiles for different dpi? I'd think not, but sometimes the obvious isn't!
20  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Where do "Profiles" (paper, monitor, printer) belong? I'm Confused. on: February 11, 2023, 04:43:28 PM
When you download a new profile, you right click on it and choose Install. I'm not sure if this adds some registry entry or other record, but I never just copy a file directly to the directory. Mike?

Ha! You know, I have to post foolishness because there's little I can say about Qimage. It just works. Every Time. If I'm lucky, I print a batch of stuff for each update, but sometimes the program advances far faster than I do. The new clues/reminders are good because I do forget that stuff.

Teach it? Had they even invented it yet?

(I can say this because it was a recent innovation in my time)

Throwing in another datapoint, I have the original Canon PRO-100. What I found was that plain paper ink consumption was huge, so much so that I never print plain paper documents with it. Photos, OTOH, seem to use a lot less ink. Go figure. I use Red River Ultrapro Gloss II (#1656) most of the time, but just started using Polar Matte (#1870). I don't print a lot and might use 2-3 ink sets a year. My guess is that surface could have a lot to do with ink consumption. I also don't seem to have any problem with disuse. I can go months at a time with no clogs, in fact I've never had a clog in the life of the printer, and I never do a cleaning. I only use Canon inks.

Not sure when the change happened, but the editor seems much faster!
26  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: RFP (request for proposal) Printing of PDFs on: December 16, 2022, 07:48:11 PM
Comment from the peanut gallery, worth every cent you've paid for it. I'm the photographer, not the volume  printer. When I give images to the layout people, I give them sRGB jpg files, knowing there won't be any color space problems. I may have edited them with Qimage. Or not. They probably create pdfs for the print house, but I don't know that and don't care. I have a suspicion that they sometimes send Publisher or Word files. Sometimes I send images to a printing firm that does huge panels for show booths. Again, I sent sRGB jpg files because everybody knows how to deal with that. I certainly don't send pdf documents for various reasons, one of which being too many ways to lose quality. My hope is that the printer uses Qimage or something like it (is there such a thing?) but my guess is they don't, and probably print from a photo editor like PS.

Every now and then somebody gives me images as a pdf file. My first thought is, "I wish they hadn't." My second thought is, "Darn, how do I get the images out of that file with the least degradation possible."

I understand the desire to print everything from Qimage, including pdf files, because it does such a good job. If that feature came with zero detractions from every other aspect of the program, I'd like it too. Somehow I doubt that would be the case. FWIW, Affinity Photo will let you open and print a pdf file. The first step is to choose a dpi (with a maximum of 400), a color model and whether to favor editable text, plus some other stuff. Always makes me wonder if I've made the right choices.

I dunno Fred, I think I could give you a run for your money. Learning new things gets harder and harder.

Back when I was a kid, the auto dealers couldn't show the new cars until the "official" release date. Until then they had the showroom windows covered with paper and the reveal was a big thing. Maybe we need brown paper over the website until the magic hour?

It's true. Qimage videos are among the few I can stand to watch. Wow, the new feature is really well thought out.
Happy T-day everybody!

I use a Canon with factory ink. What are these "clogs" you speak of?

Hopefully you survived Ian without too much damage. Things look incredibly bad down there.
