Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Gamut Warnings

Hi Fred,
I'm in Canandaigua, NY. It's really a good place to live, no hurricanes, no volcanos, no wild fires, almost no earthquakes, plenty of fresh water, low housing prices, a fair number of high tech jobs and the snow isn't nearly as bad as decades past. Summers aren't that hot, winters aren't that cold. Probably due to global warming, but maybe just normal variation. Just far enough from lake Ontario and lake Erie to avoid most of the lake effect snow. Just north enough from Pa to avoid the heavy rain and storms they seem to get. That's why they call it "The Chosen Spot".
My dad is a ham, but hasn't been on the air for a long time. Sadly, most of the people he used to talk to have passed on. He's extremely good with the computer, unlike many his age.
Best, Conrad

Lost my mom a few years ago and my dad is living in Palm Coast. He's 91. Fortunately my sister and husband live nearby and stop in almost daily. Hopefully the hurricane won't be too bad, but I can't image 10-20" of rain where I live (Upstate NY), and I'm on a hill. Power outages suck, but with a cooler and some ice packs you can manage for a while. Stay safe!

Anything other than glossy reduces the gamut the paper is capable of. I wouldn't get too concerned over it. I use the gamut display to get a general handle on things, but just let Qimage decide what intent to use (auto mode) and have at it.

Nice vid! There were some subtleties I didn't appreciate and it made things extremely clear. Thanks!
(Fred and I have the same problem- put us in the wrong orientation and we may not be able to get up.)

Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: RAW Processing Speed

17.5 seconds to process 8 RAWs from my Nikon Z6 (24.5 MP). No filters. This is on an i7-6700K, 4G, 4 cores, with 16G memory. Windows 10. Probably about 5 years old. The problem is my directories usually have A LOT MORE than 8 images!

Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: RFP (request for proposal) Printing of PDFs

I've wanted to do this myself and the reason is simple. Qimage has me spoiled. I know my printer settings and color management are set up correctly. Working outside of Qimage it's always more of a guessing game- did I miss something important? That said, I don't even know if color management is maintained as a photo gets inserted into a PDF file, and resolution certainly gets trashed most of the time. The reality is that when I print a PDF nobody really notices or cares about the photo quality. So, even though it might be a handy feature, Qimage probably shouldn't try to be a document processor. I'd rather the focus remained on doing what it does best- printing photos!

Technical Discussions / Printers / Re: Setting media types

Bummer. I was envisioning something like a 2-axis graph, with ink on one axis and whatever on the other, with a dot showing where each choice lived. Being a measurement geek, I wonder if one could measure the mass of a piece of paper, printed with each choice, to determine how much ink was deposited? Need a sensitive lab balance, but seems possible.

Technical Discussions / Printers / Setting media types

I've been under the assumption that setting the media type (Canon PRO-100) changes the amount of ink used and maybe something to do with thickness. Maybe timing too? Is there any way to convert the media types to some numbers so one could better understand and choose them?

Seems like I'm the last remaining user! I've never tweaked my profiles but decided to try it. There's a control for brightness. When I go negative, prints get lighter. Positive, they get darker. Seems backwards- is that normal. Also, the results on soft proof are dramatic, but results on the printer are subtle and small change not visible at all. Normal? I'd think there'd be better correlation.

I would have thought there was some simple voice recognition utility to create on-the-fly captions for video, but a quick search didn't turn up much. DW and I watch a lot of movies with closed captions and, based on all the errors, they must be machine generated. Dictation using the Microsoft utility for Word and such seems to work quite well.
