Hi Bill, apologies for not replying until now, illness reared its ugly head.
The hardware I use is an Epson Perfection flatbed 3200 scanner, old but ok for me.
The software is Silverfast AI Studio. Using the 'multiscan 2 or 4 passes' does a really good scan.
Thanks for the pointers you raised.

Alan

Hi Alan-

What are you using to scan the negs?
Regarding the conversion, for B&W it should make very little difference- the intent (RC or Perc.) determines how the converter handles out of gamut colors, which I doubt you have here. That said, sometimes you'll see a difference, usually the Perc. is somewhat lighter in the mid-tones and highlights.

However, sometimes you'll also see a difference where with perc. you lose some of the darkest shadows- obviously a problem printing on matte papers!
See my new post about weirdness of Photoshop conversions versus converting in Qimage- suffice it to say that Qimage is different, and better. I am still trying to puzzle this one out!

Feel free to call if you want to discuss this further.

Scanning very old b/w negs to RGB files for restoration and to add limited colours in PS(see attachment). When printed on  gloss paper, (Ilford smooth high gloss), all is good - i.e. neutral grays and accurate colour and very little metamerism.
However, printing on matte paper, metamerism is an issue when viewed under artificial lighting.
Question: any recommendations for a matte paper that is not prone to metamerism for this type of print output and regarding rendering intent would relative colourmetric be best?
My printer is on old Epson 2100. I am using pigment CIS system Photo black. All my profiles are created using PP and printed through QSE.
Many thanks
Alan

Hi Alan,

Not quite sure of the cis system you are using, but possibly you are printing on matte paper with photo black ink. You probably need to use a matte black, which may reduce the geometric metameric failure. Also, if you are viewing the print under fluorescent lighting, it will tend to enhance the illuminant metameric failure.

wrt the rendering intent - try it and see is my best advice.

If it is critical to your work, then I would suggest you speak with specialist paper/ink suppliers. I could recommend fotospeed if you are in the UK. They have a good range of papers, and a practical knowledge of their products.  I am sure there are similar suppliers elsewhere.

Best wishes,
Ray

Hi Ray,Thanks for your imput, I will check out Fotospeed.

Where was that photo taken? looks like a 1947 ish at Torquay, I am sure I can remember subs being there about then.

hi Jeff, my research suggests location is Devonport, Plymouth.  H29 sank there in 1926. The H class were single hull trainer boats designed towards the end of WW1 c1916. This photo was originally taken c1920.

Hi Limey
I use a fotospeed CIS pigment system for my Epson 2100 printer together with Profile Prism and it's been a HUGE learning curve. The fotospeed CIS system works very well. I have been using it for about 10 months and no air locks whatsoever. In my opinion, the ink is excellent. The customer support is good; they got me up and running in an afternoon. Of course the install is absolutely one step at a time, and ensure that you follow the instructions! Hope this helps.
Best wishes
Alan

Hi to all - has anyone out there used this photo editing software? I am testing the 31 day trial version and am very impressed so far as it will edit in16 bit and has a host of tools etc.  Would appreciate any comments if any of you are familiar with this programme. Thank you.

I got 11 and a headache - I'm now going to have a glass of wine, one with a deep shaded red color!
38  Mike's Software / Profile Prism / Re: Profiles are to yellow on: January 01, 2010, 04:48:36 PM
First comments since my purchase of PP several months ago.
I have also had the green /yellow cast, use an Epson 2100 printer with a CIS system & have tried tweaking the profiles time and time again. Temporarily gave up, then approached the issue as a flawed starting point -(my first set of printer target 40 tifs all seem to be very dark, over saturated and dense -all printed using ‘QI /Prtr /ICC OFF ‘and Epson ‘print setup /no color controls’)
I then reprinted all printer target 40 tifs using ‘QI /Prtr/ ICC OFF/  no color controls’  for all the paper media I use, both gloss & matte (Epson-Ilford-Fotospeed etc). I did this at varying levels of ink color densities.  Access via Epson’s 'print setup/properties/advanced tab/paper configuration/color density'
Printer target 40 tifs prints at less 5% ink-less 10% ink-up to less 25% ink color density.
Created new profiles for each reprint, then made test prints of each profile - (hope that I'm making some sense?)
After much trial and error I settled on 25%less ink.
I used ‘QI/ Prtr/ ICC OFF’, Epson’ print setup /no color controls’, with color density set at 'less 25%' for printing the printer target 40 tifs.  These settings created printer targets that were less dense and lighter. Then, I scanned the IT8 target with the new printer 40 target, creating new profiles.
When I used the new profile, the green /yellow cast was still there, though less obvious. I then printed a picture using 25% less color density which was just too light; finally settled on 15% less color density.
So far so good - green/ yellow cast no longer an issue - still testing though.

PRINTER SETTINGS THAT I USE FOR PRINTING THE ABOVE PROFILE:
EPSON PRINT SETUP/PROPERTIES/ADVANCED/ NO COLOR CONTOLS/ PAPER CONFIG/ /LESS 15% COLOR DENSITY

All this would seem to indicate that the ‘no color controls’ setting in the Epson 2100 printer  lays down a lot of ink and needs to be adjusted .  All of this can only be a pointer to all of you out there,  as each printer /paper/ scanner combination etc  has their own unique issues to be resolved.

Many thanks Fred and Mike; I look forward to ordering and using profile prism at some point. Alan

I am thinking of purchasing profile prism later this year; will I be able to use my silverfast Ai to generate the profiles on my epson perfection 3200 scanner?  Any advice appreciated - thank you.

Hmmmm...

I temporarily installed Qimage on my laptop, and tried it there. Same thing. So maybe it isn't a driver issue after all.
