Thanks, I think I knew about all or most of them. I'm looking for a more WYSIWYG, visual approach, with grid lines, the ability to resize using the gridlines, etc.

It may be that the rulers and snap would do what I'm looking for, but I don't know how to use them, either.

Is it possible to apply a grid to the layout window? eg. 1/8". or 1/2"

Is it? I find the search feature in the program help unusable. I search for Grid, and it shows me a page about a mile long, and I have to manually search for grid on the page. Must be a PC thing? If I could download the help file, I could search it more easily

Hi Mike-

For Photographers doing hi-end adjustments, LAB is really essential for some operations. Having to convert to RGB before bringing into Qimage, and then convert in Qimage to the printer profile, is both a waste of time, as well as destructive to the image. It doesn't seem to me that it could be that hard to do, but maybe I'm wrong.

Is there a reason LAB is not supported?

I'm printing a file from a client, it's in CMYK, when I bring it into Qimage it's as if it doesn't recognize the profile. Does Qimage convert from CMYK?
How do I know it's not recognizing the profile? When I preview the CMYK image  in Qimage, the colors have changed significantly. If I convert to SRGB first, the colors look fine.

Any ideas?

I am printing B&W photos, originals are in QTRLAB space (a grayscale space), printing to a z3200, Ilford Gold Fiber Silk, custom RGB profile made with APS. When I convert the photo from gray to RGB in PS, perceptual w/ BP, I lose about 5 points at the black end (eg., input, ouput 5), and worse, the dark shadows are very compressed (eg input 5%, output 1%; input 10%, output 5%). In addition, the nuetral colors get screwed up, and I get some banding in the mid-tones, and the highlights go a little lighter. Altogether, it's FUBAR!

You might thing something is screwed up wtih the output profile, but here's the kicker- converting/printing and/or converting/file save in QIMAGE is fine!

You might also ask, why am I bothering to convert in PS in the first place? Because, I have always assumed that I would have more control, better results in PS! Sometimes I add an adjustment layer in PS to the converted file, so that's better, except of course when the conversion sucks!

Anyone else ever seen this, and have any guidance as to why it's happening?

Hi Alan-

What are you using to scan the negs?
Regarding the conversion, for B&W it should make very little difference- the intent (RC or Perc.) determines how the converter handles out of gamut colors, which I doubt you have here. That said, sometimes you'll see a difference, usually the Perc. is somewhat lighter in the mid-tones and highlights.

However, sometimes you'll also see a difference where with perc. you lose some of the darkest shadows- obviously a problem printing on matte papers!
See my new post about weirdness of Photoshop conversions versus converting in Qimage- suffice it to say that Qimage is different, and better. I am still trying to puzzle this one out!
