Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Request user Specified location for Raw cache

Hi Andy, There is no way I will want to cache everything I shoot on my C drive You don't have to. There are settings in Raw preferences to not do it at all; the thumbnail menu allows you to cache specific folders and there are options in Utilities to manage the cache, it's up to you. The whole point of the new features seem to me to give you full control on how to manage your cache. Like you, I don't keep all my images on my 300GB C-drive but copy older images there if I want to work on them and when finished, move back to their original location. I've regularly deleted orphaned and old thumbs in the past so that management process will continue. It would be nice to be able to specify another drive location for the raw cache. That exists already, in Utilities there's an option to Migrate/Copy Application Data, that includes the cache. I'm not sure how that affects the efficiency of running QU though. I didn't notice that option. Thanks for pointing it out. If space is it issue I'll try that. If anyone has experience on the performance aspect of moving Qimage application data to another hard drive I would be interested in hearing about your experience. I have a 300GB 10,000 rpm Velociraptor for my C drive That seems small for a modern quad core machine; in recent investigations I've done to upgrade, 500GB seemed to be the minimum and 1TB is common. However you appear to have other HD space but Windows Application/Program data is on the C drive and many other programs use it for various forms of "cache", so it seems a good idea to have a good sized HD :-\. I have 5.5 GB of hard drive space but my C drive (and D drive) are my fastest drives. It sounds like you are not familiar with Velociraptor drives and building performance machines. They are noticeably faster than the other fast drives I use which are WD Black 1 GB drives. WD just released a 600 GB version this year but I don't want to pay the premium price ($300) just to store a few more images. Maybe I can migrate my Qimage data to my D drive and see what happens. Perhaps it will allow me to do other things at the same time because my C hard drive wont' be so throttled when the cache is being built. Terry

Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Request user Specified location for Raw cache

I just looked at the size of my Raw cache and it is 12GB and I have only cached a few folders and a very small percentage of what I have on my hard drives. There is no way I will want to cache everything I shoot on my C drive. It would be nice to be able to specify another drive location for the raw cache. Lighting raw sounds good but at what cost to overall performance and resource usage. Please don't respond to get a larger hard drive because they are inexpensive. I have a 300GB 10,000 rpm Velociraptor for my C drive which I have no intention of bogging it down with Gigs of photo images. Is there a solution I have overlooked?

I don't quite understand the improvements besides building the Raw cache faster. It still uses 100% of the 4 cores on my 3.7GHz PC and basically stops me from using the computer for much else until it is done. It would be helpful if in preferences you put a user changeable entry for percent of CPU usage dedicated to Qimage so you could use the computer for other things while it is building the thumbs and raw cache.

Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Anyone using Mike's profile for Canon 5D Mark II or 7D?
|

Maybe part of the reason my Raw conversions for the 5D look so good is that I forgot I purchased a profile from Mike and installed it in Studio so Ultimate has been using it. For some reason I never used Studio for raw processing much, even after purchasing the profile, so I forgot I had the profile. I think it was a stop gap measure until Phase One added support for the 5D Mark II into C1 at the time I purchased the profile. Now I'll just have to decide if I should get the profile for the 7D in the future. (I was looking through old CDs this morning and saw the CD I burned the downloaded profile to......... and sure enough, it was installed.) Andy

Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Anyone using Mike's profile for Canon 5D Mark II or 7D?
|

I was wondering if anyone is using Mike's profile for the Canon 5D Mark II or 7D in Qimage Ultimate and what your thoughts are on the profile versus not using the profile. If the profile targets are being submitted by different people under different shooting conditions how is consistency achieved in producing a final profile for a particular camera? Would a slightly different profile be made if someone else shot the target under different lighting conditions?
Thanks, Andy

Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Problem posting on this forum
|
on: July 30, 2010, 07:37:40 PM

I am using Verizon DSL for my Internet provider. When I try to post to this forum it times out on first try. I have to hit the back button on the browser (IE) and then hit the Post button again and it will then post on the second try if I do it immediately after the time out. This happens with Firefox as well, but Firefox will ask me if I want to retry which makes it easier. Does anyone else have this problem and does anyone else have a solution?
Thanks, Andy

When I select a thumb of a TIFF file I converted and send to Photoshop, when I come back and hit OK (I have finished editing) it repositions the thumb folder to C:\Windows\system32\spool\drivers\color\. Very Annoying.

An addendum to the space bar issue. I now notice that if I select view full screen from the right click menu and then exit the full screen view, the space bar will now work to display THAT thumb full screen. If I click on another thumb next and hit the space bar first, it doesn't work again.

Fred,
I noticed the the redefine Fill did more than the shadow/highlight adjustment in Capture one. The results are much better. Thanks for the additional information which will help a lot.

Will having your profile for my Canon 5D Mark II and 7D give me better Raw results than just using Ultimate as is? If so, I think that's a great idea I have been a Studio / Qimage user for a long time. Andy
