For 16 bit images, both Qimage One and Qimage Ultimate produce visually identical output whether the driver is 8 or 16 bits.  It does this by intelligently dithering the 8 bit values using the 16 bit data in images so you get much higher than 8 bits/channel even with 8 bit drivers.  You can test it if you like: create any type of 16 bit gradient you want and print it in both Q1 or QU and then also print it in any application that supports "true" 16 bit printing (in Windows, you'd need a dedicated 16 bit print plugin to try this as Windows itself has an 8 bit/channel pipeline).  There will be no visible difference in the output.

Mike

Ok thank's Mike. I also think that I accidentally clicked on the report to moderator button instead of the quote button. :-O

I'm not a pixel peeper per se, I have a drum scanner that outputs 8 bit and another 16. My pudding is always the print, and I normally don't hold them up side by side. If I like the print and it moves me, I don't care how it was printed.

Cheers,

Ned

Hi Ned,

I looked this up online, and you can read about this setting in the 3880 manual if you have it on hand (Page 52):

https://files.support.epson.com/pdf/pro3880/pro3880ug.pdf

"AccuPhoto HD2 for any type of photographic printing. If you are
printing 16-bit color images, select 16 Bit Output for the most
accurate transitions and gradations."

So you would check that box if the image you are printing is 16-bit. In this case, the Qimage One pipe line is 8-bit, even for 16-bit source images. So that box should NOT be checked for use with Qimage One.

As far as resolution, use the highest resolution for printing smaller prints, where they will be viewed closer. For very large prints which will only be viewed at a distance, you can use the lower resolution settings, which will reduce processing time to print.

Andrew

Hi Andrew, thanks for your reply. Without any further context, this implies that with Qimage One I wouldn't have "accurate transitions and gradations." In my color images due to its eight-bit pipeline? Can you expand on that a bit?

Thanks,

Ned

I noticed that my new Mac printer driver for the Epson 3880 has a 16bit output checkbox, I don't recall that setting on the Windows side. Should I select 16bit? What will it do for me?  Also, I do recall a comment by Mike someplace that said something to the effect that we should always select the highest print resolution. In my case, that's Max 720 vs. 360/220/180. That's a correct statement?

Another migration from PC to Mac Qimage Ultimate to Qimage One. One feature I loved about Ultimate was hovering over a print and the dialog that indicated the print quality and the actual print size. Can we get that in Qimage One, please?  As it is, I can't find the actual printed image size anywhere.
As far as I can tell, it is already in there.

Hi Fred,

Sorry I was talking about Qimage One. Mike pointed it out to me at the bottom. My new monitor and my crappy eyes are to blame, not me :-)

If you're on the Mac version, select the print and look at the status bar under the live view (under the row of buttons).  It shows you the name of the image and the print size.

Regards,
Mike

I knew it was going to be right in front of my face. Thanks Mike

Yeah thanks Mike. But I've been on Qimage for the PC for years and years and it just seem sad to leave it.  Cry Cry Cry
8  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Epson drivers on Mac Studio via Virtual Machine (Parallels) on: April 01, 2022, 11:34:42 PM
Looks like I hit a snag with my migration from PC to Mac. I purchased the new Mac Studio to replace my aging PC. Because of the new Mac Architecture, Windows will only install the ARM version of Windows on the Mac Studio. So, the Epson drivers won't load on Windows in my Parallels virtual machine so, Qimage is useless.  I haven't explored Qimage one, so if I don't edit inside Qimage, will Qimage one print just a well as Ultimate?

Edit - Playing with Qimage One now. Hopefully I can run Ultimate at some point  Cry

Thanks for the tip!

So I think my problem was the result of not looking at which page was actually printing. It seems that its easy (for me) to change something and not realize that another page was added resulting in me not printing the correct page. I've made it a habit to look at the page numbers at the bottom to make sure I've removed any pages that I don't want printed.  Roll Eyes

I'll have to wait until it happens again to see if I screwed up somewhere or what.

The problem is if you starting playing with the output sizes there can be a glitch where either qimage is not sending the new output settings to the printer driver or the printer driver won't accept it, i don't know.
Please explain in detail.
Playing with output sizes.....
What size print desired; crop on or off, with border or without, and border made using borders or mat type?

When you do what, you get a wrong response?
Fred

Detail. Say you have a print set up how you want and print. All goes good.  Then with that print job still active you change the print size or you change a boarder or maybe fit to paper or fit to page. Now in Qimage it looks correct on screen, and the image size shown when you hover over the image with your mouse is also correct. So now you print and the print comes out in the previous size, not the size you just changed too.
14  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Actual print size not matching expected output on: August 18, 2018, 02:37:53 PM
Yes, printing to paper. I printed an 8.5 x 11 test image first, setting this up the normal way through the printers and settings tab.  After that successful print I selected a 17x22 paper size in the qimage media size drop down in order to print my final print.  The image then changes to the correct size as displayed in the image display area of qimage, and if I hover over with my mouse it shows the correct image size of 21.30 x 14.53 including boarder which is currently set at inner 0.25. There's no issue with that size, it will print correctly.  The problem is if you starting playing with the output sizes there can be a glitch where either qimage is not sending the new output settings to the printer driver or the printer driver won't accept it, i don't know.

This is nothing I am setting incorrectly in qimage, I know how to make a print having used this software for many years. There'a a glitch when you start playing with the output settings in qimage. As you can see above, I'm not the only person this has happened too. My current setup is Windows 10, Qimage 2018.121 and an Epson 3880 however this issue has been happening for years.  Hope that helps.

I haven't been able to reproduce this so let's call it a glitch for now  Roll Eyes
