31  Technical Discussions / Printers / Re: Epson R1900 Woes on: September 22, 2012, 10:32:10 PM
Don,

I have always used Epson inks from B&H in my 1800 and 1900 printers.  My problem now is not even ink related.  I can't even get the printer to power up without the power light and paper feed light flashing.  Occasionally I'll power it up and it will give the solid green power light, but after putting a sheet in and pressing paper feed it will fault again.  I found a service manual online and have taken the printer apart making sure all the sensors are at least clean and mechanically sound.  My next step will be to verify voltages with the multimeter.  I'm was just hoping someone else had the same or similar issue and had an easy fix before I give up on it.  I'm hesitant to buy another one since both printers now have had similar problems.

Thanks,
Dave

Fred,

Thanks but I've tried that already.  At this point, computer aside, I can't even take a fresh sheet of paper and eject it through the printer.  The paper will load fine (i.e. press the paper feed button draws the paper into the printer ready to print), but then if I want to "eject" the paper by pressing the paper feed button again it will only draw the paper into the printer another 1/2" or so before it stops and the lights start flashing as described before.  The the only option is to either power the printer off and pull the paper out, or keep pressing the paper feed button many times.

Thanks,

Dave

All,

I posted a few years ago about my R1800 I had at the time and it's issues with not being able to load paper.  It appears I'm having similar issues with my R1900 printer.  What started out as just a couple of blocked nozzles has now turned into the printer not wanting to feed paper properly.  Here is how I got where I'm at:  Started with noticing color missing from one of my prints so I ran a nozzle check and sure enough multiple colors showed blocked nozzles.  Ran the head clean utility with no success.  No paper feed issues at this point.  I did some searching on the internet and found some color charts to print in lieu of the nozzle check which some sites suggest is better than running the nozzle check and head cleaning.  After 2 or so sheet things were looking good but not perfect but the sheet was showing some horizontal banding on all colors.  More searching on the internet (right or wrong) lead me to others using windex, etc. to clean ink pads, etc. which I did since the ink pad on the left was overflowing.  At or about this point is when the banding got worse.  I thought perhaps the rollers were not grabbing the paper so I started to run cleaning sheets through which is where it got worse.  If I put a cleaning sheet in (per the directions for the R1900 on Epson's site) and press the paper feed button the paper que's up properly.  Pressing the paper feed button again to eject the paper causes the paper to advance about 1/2" before it stops and flashes the green power light and red paper feed light simultaneously.  pressing the button again clears the error, pressing again advances another 1/2" and so on and so forth.  Once you repeat this process enough you can eventually get the paper out of the printer.  If I power the printer off (with the button) and then power back on sometimes the printer will go through the initialization perfectly, other times it will stop at the end flashing the paper feed and ink lights.  So, I guess my question is if anyone has any suggestions (other than kicking it to the curb) that I can try?  Could I have gotten ink on the PE sensor or any other sensor?  I really like this printer and the prints I get from it, but after the R1800 and now this one doing nearly the same thing I'm losing hope.  Not to mention the wife saying if I can't fix it myself we're done with photo printers  Shocked .

Thanks,
Dave

Jim,

Interestingly enough holding the "windows" key down and tapping either left or right arrow keys will snap left or right for me (on Qimage Professional).  repeated tapping of the left or right arrows "cycles" through left or right snaps.  Taping the up or down arrows while holding the "windows" key usually maximizes or minimizes for me in Win 7 but does not with QI Professional.  Hope this helps.

Well I received the R1900 a week or so ago and I have to say so far I am impressed.  Setting up the printer was a breeze, downloaded the latest ICC profiles and made a few test prints on 8 x 10.  The prints seem to more closely match my calibrated monitor.  I'm sure I be tweaking a bit more, but have to say for the most part I am happy with the decision.  Thanks again for all the help.

Fred/Brian,

Thanks for the reply's.  I think I'm leaning towards the 1900.  B&H and Epson are out of the 2880 and their $200 rebate ends tonight.  B&H has the 1900 for $484 and the $150 rebate bringing it to $334.  The 3880 looks like a fabulous printer, but just a tad out of what I am willing to spend at the moment.  Being just a hobbyist/perfectionist, I think the 1900 should work for me especially since it was the replacement for the 1800.

Again, many thanks.

All,

Sadly I've come to the conclusion that I think I will need to replace my R1800 printer.  Back in March I moved and during the move something must have happened to the printer along the way.  While printing the printer will make some grinding/popping noises like the paper feed gears aren't meshing properly and the prints will reflect this.  Printing one full page email for example will result in the output taking up only half or three quarters of the page due to the printer not advancing the paper properly.  I've taken it apart numerous times inspecting the gears for alignment, chips, etc. and even went through the service manual checking things that I have the ability to check, ran cleaning sheets through it, and spoke with Epson support.  Sending it in for service seems like an expense that may or may not be cost effective.  It doesn't happen all the time either, sometimes powering the printer off and on works but now that has stopped working and the problem is near constant.

So, I was looking at replacing it with either the R1900 or the R2880.  I've read some reviews (photo-i , etc.), and was just wondering if anyone has any opinions (good or bad) about these printers or any other suggestions.  I really liked the prints I got from the R1800 and am disappointed to have to replace it.

Thanks in advance,

Dave
38  Technical Discussions / Printers / Re: Epson R800 Paper Feed Issue? on: December 16, 2009, 05:35:26 PM
Fred/Terry,

I had a paper feed issue with my R1800 (still do actually) and the epson support recommended the Platen Cleaning sheets.  Here is the link http://epson.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/12552 .  If the link doesn't work, the product code is S041150.  It didn't solve my problem though.  My R1800 (which I love also) will double/ghost print as well but mine sounds more like the gears jumping teeth when printing, happens about 80% of the time now.  I've tried different papers, changed to the thick paper setting which helped initially, ran through the service manual and tried things I could do without the epson diagnostic tools (o'scope, etc.).

Thanks,

Dave
