I'm running Win 7 and 8.1 in dual boot on SSD with images on a separate HDD though RAW cache and thumbs are on the SSD (there is planty of space). I have 8GB RAM and a video card (AMD Radeon HD6700). The problem has been happening for some months and has occurred on several versions of Qimage up to and including 216. However, all is well though slow, on a an old underpowered PC using XP. If I have a good number of RAW files in a folder eg 50 plus and have lightning RAW set the PC crashes while building the RAW cache. I get either the BSOD with a reference to hardware issues or there is a brief colour band on the screen and the PC shuts down.
nb when I have the raw/thumbs option set as no raw cahce but high quality thumbs I still get the message that RAW cache is building after thumbs have built. I assume that is normal.
So, there is something in my setup that is cauisng trouble. Before I progress blindly trying this and that I would be grateful for guidance.

I tried Win 8 some time ago - I got a copy cheap because I already had Win 7. I hated the gui but had the impression that what was under the bonnet was good. I tried Classic Shell to get the Win 7 gui and that was fine but a couple of items (Thunderbird?) didn't work immediately so rather than play I deleted Win 8 and went back to Win 7 which I like. Apart from a couple of trivial niggles the PC is going well so it's time for me to upset that LOL! Ah well, no fool like an old fool.
The idea would be to move over to Win 8 - I don't intend to run the two in parallel apart from getting Win 8 established. I have an old PC on Win XP another very solid OS (RIP) - I wasn't impressed with Win2000, Vista etc and never did anything except read the complaints about them! However, I'm wondering what files etc I can share or copy to Win 8 from Qimage. Using the same folder for RAW cache would seem possible. Indeed It might be possible to get Win 8 to use the RAW cache in the Win 7 partition by directing the Win 8 RAW cache to that folder and I am guessing I can copy and paste the thumbnails. None of these is anything more than for temporary convenience or for starting up but it would be nice to know if they should work before I screw everything up.

Thanks. I had an idea and got both folders on screen together. I copied a file onto one and saw it arrive on the other simultaneously and reckoned (correctly as it turns out) they were the same folder.
What about my second query? If I dual boot Win7 and Win 8 and place the RAW cache on a separate internal HDD can I use the same RAW cache folder for both OSs?

I'm thinking of installing Win 8 and dual booting with Win 7 then gradually going through the tedious business of loading programmes onto Win 8. On checking whether I had sufficient space on my C drive I found Qimage RAW cache was in two folders: I assumed these were duplicates and taking up more space than necessary on my 224Gb SSD C drive. Both sets of RAW cache and thumbnails include those from today’s pictures. The two folders are:
C/ProgramData/ddisoftware/Qimage with a list of folders including RAW cache and thumbnails.
C/Users/All users/ddisoftware/Qimage with a similar list of folders including Rawcache and thumbnails.
Looking in the Utilities tab Qimage says it is using ProgramData (not Users) for the location of RAW cache and thumbs.
“OK,” I thought. “I’ll delete the one in the C/Users folder.” Both disappeared and both re-appeared when I restored from the Recycle bin. Are they actually the same set of folders just with different routes to get to them?
If/When I dual boot Win 7 and Win 8 I would want to put the RAW cache on a different drive. I know I can do that, indeed I’ve done it before. Can I use the same location for both Win 7 and Win 8? Then I won’t have two sets of RAW cache which take up significant disc space.

I used to use Preview, give photos different ratings (according to print size, emailing or whatever) and then select those on rating 2* (for example) to email. I haven't tried "on deck" yet.

That's slow! I've just tried a download of that video and it is around 600Kb/s for me. This suggests your slow speed is not down to YTD but to something else eg the speed supported by your connection which can vary according to the numbers of people using it at one time. Ours is nominally a max of 6Mb/s for downloading but can be very much lower during peak times. Sometimes if you cancel a download and start again speed improves - but if you are 1.5d into a 3d download you might hesitate to do that!

Hi Paul,
Yes, YTD is doing its job and I'm downloading a few more Qimage videos right now. It does only one video at a time unless you use the paid for version. Open YTD, select Download, start playing the video you want, click on the address bar for that video to highlight it, press CTRL C and the link appears in the YTD box. Choose the destination, click Download and off you go. All pretty intuitive.
I'm no expert on these downloaders but I have used Speedbit (also free) which does allow downloading of several videos at once BUT it doesn't want to do the job with Qimage videos, and YTD proved itself capable of downloading some videos that Speedbit wouldn't handle. Also Speedbit includes some add ons that you might not want. These have to be deleted via win Programme controls in the Control Panel.

As ever, thank you gentlemen. I needed to put something in the From box otherwise Qimage protests. So typing <input> worked. You will say that <input> will be there already - but I forgot I had already adjusted and cropped the particular images in question which results in a jpeg of unidentified colour space. Typing <input> in the conversion (jpeg to jpeg) did the job. I am aware that raw files don't have an inherent colour space - but my Sony A77 raw declares aRGB which I suppose is the result of the processing Sony uses to create its raw files.
I first had to learn about Adobe RGB when I bought a Minolta 7i which had Adobe jpegs as default. Lots of people complained about poor, washed out colours. Minolta should have had sRGB as the default but they designed for photographers and not their marketing people (who would have had a point for once).
I haven't used Photoshop - Qimage has done me for the last 13 or 14(!) years so I'm not into dng raw. However, I did exploit a cheap offer on Elements for some of its tools but its gui is awful. If you have used PS and jump to Qimage it will need some learning. But the same is true if you go the other way!

The photographers for the wedding of my daughter (friends of the couple's and professionals) don't do printing and sent me the raw files (as well as the jpegs). They used Canon 5D and 6D. I've adjusted and printed a small number from the raw. This worked well. It would wouldn't it when you use Qimage. However, I wanted to copy some adjusted photos to the couple (via WeTransfer) so they could check on whether the cropping and sizing suited, so it made sense to put them in sRGB. Hmmm, the raw files are dng and when I put the cursor over a thumbnail the message at the bottom says ICC: EOS 5D mark II.icm. The image information box says, "no embedded ICC profile". I assumed that a conversion from aRGB to sRGB would work but the result is a very washed out look. This is not an immediate problem since it's not the colour rendition that matters right now - but I might well be wanting to transfer sRGB versions for wider use so I would like to know how. I sent the files without a conversion but what looked good on my wide gamut monitor might not look so good on the newly weds'.
I tried to sell the photographers Qimage so that they could start to print - but failed. I reckon a touch of Qimage and their jpegs would come out a lot better - IMHO!

Have you tried downloading to a different disk or folder in the Qimage disk or to a USB stick? If you can, you might try copying it from there to the desired folder. Might be a workaround but it won't necessarily tell you a lot about why downloading isn't working as it should.

Okay, let me explain my work flow.
Two days ago I was looking at a 3 shot pano of Lower Calf Creek, each frame 36 megapixels.
I was wondering how big this image was natively. To me that means how many inches is this image at 300 pixels per inch. I try to print at 300 ppi. That image is 7031 x 11087. Now I know that if I just divide 731 / 300 I will get 23.47 inches. But I do not want to do that for every image. I want that information displayed. I want to work in inches not just pixels. I also know that I do not have to worry about printing at or close to 300 ppi and I can just let the program do it.
So I opened the image in Photoshop and went into the image size command and saw immediately the size in inches at 300 ppi is 23.47 x 36.957. Then I said "Ah ha. I'll just print it at 24 x 36 and it will work fine." But I needed the image size in inches information to do that. So I always have to go to Photoshop to get it. I thought there would be some way to see the size in both pixels and inches at 300 ppi without going out to Photoshop.
That is all I want. And I do intend to keep working that way. Not by looking at an image and starting by thinking about how big I want to print it. This is how I work. This is actually a very simple question. Can the program show file size in inches at 300 ppi (or some density) and pixels? I do not see that it currently does this.

I fancy you are putting more restrictions on yourself than necessary. Re-sizing methods are very good and accommodate far beyond a few % changes (eg from 23" to 24"). Almost all of us decide what size of print we want and unless the interpolation needed is huge, we just go ahead. Others can suggest better than I what interpolation factors still produce decent results. Note that a 40"x60" picture is going to be viewed from a little distance away so there will be forgiveness on extensive interpolation - or a lower dpi. All this means you need no more than a ballpark figure (and a very big ballpark at that) to determine what size (in inches) you can print. If you really want to stick with 300dpi as guiding your print size you will be sufficiently accurate with mental arithmetic eg 7031/300 = a bit over 20 and 11087/300 = just under 40. That's miles more accurate than you need to be. As others have said, 300dpi is a bit of a fiction anyway. Qimage reads what your particular printer prefers as its dpi and exploits that eg 240dpi, 720dpi etc. So, you are highly unlikely to be printing at 300dpi anyway. Sandy |

My reading of it is that Uncletim is prepared to allow some interpolation but sets his own limits. He uses 300dpi as a benchmark to assess very rapidly how large he can print. Qimage does not provide that information but wouldn't the file size and/or dimensions in pixels be at least as useful a guide?
As a matter of interest, in what program is any re-sizing done? One is unlikely to be looking at a 44inch wide print from as close a range as a 10x8 so is the extent of interpolation allowed altered accordingly?

I did well? I bought an SSD in mid Dec. In plenty of time to transfer everything from my HDD but I didn't realise that for this HDD activating ACHI was essential. So learned how to use PartitionMagic and clean the drive. Reloaded all Windows infinite number of updates on a flaky internet connection. Then everything kept freezing (not the weather, that was in full spate). So, started again. Phew all done, just in time to get the family Christmas cards printed late on Christmas eve - in Q of course.
Also received Gary Friedman's much vaunted book on the Sony A77 and a copy of Elements 11. I've not dipped into Adobe PS software - Qimage has done most of what I want for 13(!) years. Loading and opening that will be a bit like venturing onto a dubious website!
But the best present of all - Fred's rhyme. Thank you Fred.

On behalf of Al, thanks for all your help. We managed to resolve the issue. Al was using a template through Custom layout and it seemed to get in the way of what he wanted to do. Yes, it should have worked but I suspect he had unintentionally got lost in the complexities of Custom and Template. Starting with a clean page, and no evidence of an existing template showing on the screen he got it to work. Remarkable patience on Al's part, most people have had a good rant at Qimage in his situation but he never cast aspersions on the program and just got on with finding a solution.
All he needs to do now is work out how to register here. He has tried and tried emailing but can't find a reply. I fancy that one is down to Mike.
