1  Mike's Software / FlashPipe / Re: A disappointment on: September 16, 2009, 09:33:39 PM
Mike,

I have just encountered the same problem that Steve Billard had uninstalling Flash Pipe.

I downloaded both Flash Pipe and Smart File. I am still evaluating Smart File, but now want to
purchase and install the latest vesion of Flash Pipe (correction not Smart File as in original post).  I want to do a clean install but when I go to the Win XP Pro Sp3 control panel and use Remove Programs, Flash Pipe is not listed...Smart File is listed.  I have also checked the Application Data folders...no Flash Pipe.

Flash Pipe is installed in the usual path, C:/Programs/Flash Pipe but there is No README in the folder.

Can I safely delete the entire Flash Pipe folder without causing registry problems.  My practice
is to always run my registry cleaner after doing an uninstall.

Last, on my single user computer, I have myself as the Administrator and also as a Limited User.
All my normal operations done in the limited status.

When I install the new version of Flash Pipe if I do an Adm install will Flash Pipe Flash be available
to my Limited User status?

You may recall I had a problem with Qimage where the limited user was locked out.  If I rember
correctly the problem was solved by installing Qi in the All Users App Data folder.

Thanks all your efforts.

Terry and Fred,

Thanks for your quick reply.   Ver. 268 had been working so well that I removed the earlier version...and one
of life's catch-22s got me.   I found a free browser that let me make the conversion...so all is well for now.

3  Mike's Software / Qimage Studio Edition (archived) / JPEG 2000 support on: September 13, 2009, 06:36:58 PM
I did a search of this forum and had no results or JP2 or JPEG 2000.

Today, I tried to convert both a tif and a jpg to a JPEG 2000.  In both cases I got
an error message, "JP2 not supported".  Under "View" it does not appear as a
file type but the option still appears in the conversion window.

Has supprort now been dropped in v268?

If there is no longer support for  JPEG2000, the lack of it will cause me a real problem.
I have a client involved in the graphic arts buiness who wants images in the JPEG 2000
format because this is a format used by many of its musem clients.  Note: the Smithsonian
Museum and the Library of Congress use JPEG 2000 in archives and that is probably
why the musems do also.

Mike,

Thanks for your reply. I finally solved the problem this morning before I got around to checking my email.

My problem was I was using the top level documents&settings/applicationss data/allusers path.  The light finally went on and I installed into the my user level applications data folder and now all is well.  My IDimager can see Qimage with no problems.

This is a great relief because Qimage is the centerpiece of my new workflow. The latest MS vulnerabiltiy announcement shocked me into applying Peter Krogh recommendations clean up my "DAM" act.

With Qimage, I can edit and print from any catalog level and with Albums and Jobs I can deliver repeat orders without having to go to my catalogs.

Again, thanks.

As after Micorsoft's latest vulnerabilty announcement, my IT consultant did a review and noted that my user account also had admin status and recommended that all programs be run a user status with limited rights.  I have now spent the better part of two days to run as recommended.  I tried an install under Admin user and could not get it to work with my own user ID.  Finally today I installed it under my User ID with admin status and then use the shift/advance in properties to make the selection to allow it to run with another user status.  I can now run it under my user ID if I select the option to login and run Qimage with Admin status.

However, when I try to go from my DAM software, IDImager, to Qimage to edit and print, I cannot access Qimage...I get a Micorsoft error message.

Given the the risks lurking in cyberspace, I cannot ignore the warnings about runing with admin status on a daily basis with my limited user account.  Even though I have backups, I cannot afford the the time cost if I get hacked.

Is there a way to over come my problem....did I overlook something obvious in the install?

Mike,

A further check:

I just went to my Documents and Setting\Application data folder.  There is no subfolder for Qimage.

When the install ran it used the same paths as I have see before and placed the programs in the Program Files subfolder.  The same file I have gone to in the past when windows had seen fit to clean my desktop icons and I have had to create a new one.

Some further info for you and Mike:

After last weeks warning from Microsoft about the lastest serious security issue.  I tool a long hard look.

I realized I was wide open in my user status as I had it set to Admin.  I created a new admin account for myself and set my every day user status to "limited".  I have run my antivirus, registry cleaner and Micorsoft's malware program and all ran with no errors or problems.

The uninstall required me to do so a admin.  After the install I dowloaded SE ver.266 and now it is running just as it should under my Admin login.  When I logout and then login to my limited user account, the problem is still occuring.  I get an error message for each thumb that opens and cannot delete them and am forced to use task manager to quit.  I suspect the q.bmp file is locked someway my admin change.

Again, WinXP SP3 with all updates.

Fred,

I just uninstalled and reinstalled Qimage SE v2.66 under admin status and with firewall and antiviurus turned off.  I am still getting this error message for each thumb as it opens (with correction of the named file, q.bmp not p.bmp):

The error message (WinXP 32 SP 3 + all updates) in the standard windows box reads:

Can not open file: "C:\Program Files\Qimage\q.bmp".  The system cannot find the file specified.

Now when this happens, I cannot kill the messages by clicking OK and QI hangs and I have to use task manager to kill QI.

I will now revert back to v.265 and see if this keep happening

Fred,

My Image files are on my E: Drive.  The error messages contains the reference to the C:\dirve.

I was particulary amazed to see it refer to "p.bmp" in the Qimage program file folder.  I would assume like me, Qimge would ignore bmp files but since I never use the format I have no experience with them as it may relate to Qimage.

I will uninstall and re install as you suggest.

thanks,

David

I upgraded to SE ver.266 yesterday.  Today I downloaded images from my Olympus E420 via IDImager.
The file contains only my original ORF files and DNG files converted with Adobe DNG Converter.

Suddenly when I select the folder in QI, I get a string of error mesages that say "cannot locate files: C:\Programs\Qimage\p.bmp"  ... it seems to be occuring for every thumb in the folder.  I click the messages away and the image seems to open as normal for raw adjustment and regular editing.

I am reluctant to contiune editing untill I know if there is a problem. I have never seen this message prior to ver.2.66.

Should I consider rolling back to ver.265?

Tony,

I too am noticing a slower speed with my ORF files.  I will soon see if DNGs have the same problem a I am now converting my ORFs and will use the DNG as my workfile with the ORFs in archive.

I ran Qimage under Wine on Ubuntu and it performed speedwise better than on Windows.  The only problem is that other Windows based software necessary for my workflow would not work.  If that were not the case, I would move my workflow to Ubuntu in a heartbeat!
