16  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Printing to file - problems setting size on: April 26, 2014, 04:46:06 PM
OK, I set custom, specify one dimension, size 24 (LONG), auto crop off, orientation lock, apply permanently.
select an image and its placed centrally in the page;  the area not used being changed to paper white rather than the diagonal pattern, sharpen 0 (requested by the printer, so he can optimise sharpness for paper and maybe later resizing)
print to file, and the image generated is 24" square with white border added top and bottom, rather than a horizontal format image 24" wide and much shorter

I'm trying to print a number of images to individual files to send off to an external printing company. The source images are of different sizes and different orientations, but each needs to be 'printed' to an individual file scaled to a specified maximum dimension on whichever is the longest side. I can't figure out how to do this, though I'm sure I've done it before. Currently using version 2014.210 - can update to latest version if necessary.

Can anyone advise, please?

I've had another look - settings are consistent with yours, except for the paper ...

looking at photoshop's print settings dialog, and ticking the gamut warning box shows a large part of the image is out of gamut, particularly in the areas of concern (I'm using a matt cotton rag paper, rather than a lustre paper) so it may simply be a difference in how the out of gamut colours are handled by the respective colour management systems.

I'm not Paul, I was just confirming the problem.

the correct profiles are set in both photoshop and qimage and the epson driver set to Host ICM

I can't do the check that Mike suggests as I have no more of that paper left - I was just using up the remnants to check Paul's findings. Since I mostly print monochrome using the QTR print driver nowadays I'll bow out of this (but add that I've been using Qimage since it was just 'Qimage' and do know how to set up the colour management options in both Qiomage and Photoshop)

quick photo by daylight - the top is printed by qimage, the bottom by photoshop

21  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Much better output using PS that Qimage... on: March 17, 2014, 10:54:09 AM
I've checked using Qimage Ultimate 2014.202 and Photoshop CC 14.2.1, Epson 3880 and Innova IFA12 paper (a soft textured matt paper). There are slight differences in the tones between some of the photos but not to say one is definitely better than the other. There is a distinct difference in both the colour charts in the second column from the right - the qimage print looks as if its missing a signicant amount of cyan in this column.
I do see some unevenness in the greyscale gradient in the qimage print that is not there in the photoshop print. A nozzle check doesn't show any problems.

Glad to be able to help, occasionally.
I know its heresy, but I only use Qimage for printing, and have done since the first version I found  when I was looking for a program that did a good job of resizing an image and preparing output for print. Photoshop 5 (not CS5!) was rubbish at the first, and and didn't really even attempt the second.
I've given the Qimage editor a try a couple of times (first version, and Studio) but just can't get on with it. I use Photoshop mostly when I want layers for some reason, otherwise Lightroom (I used to use Rawshooter before they were bought by Adobe).  Their approaches to editting better suits what I want to do. Qimage's approach to printing is far ahead of either.
I visit the forum occasionally, but not very often.

Hi, I would love to do the same, i.e. print cards.
Can you guide me on: ...
Printer - if you've got one that can take 300gsm paper it'll do (sorry - don't know US/ Australian equivalent designation but towards the heavy end of inkjet papers) I've used Epson 1160, 1200, 2400 and 3880 over the last ten years or so

Layout - use Qimage to create a layout! - I'll attach one of mine. What you do is up to you!

Paper - you probably don't have these exact papers available (and you don't need them) but I mostly use
for a matt surface art paper I use a cotton fibre paper - for a smooth surface Innova IFA14 and for a textured surface Innove IFA12. These are both just over 300gsm.
for a textured gloss surface I use Permajet Fibre Base Royal 325 (325gsm). This is a gloss coated suface over cotton fibre paper. (I don't like mirror gloss smooth sufaces so don't have one for that)

These papers are simply the papers I usually have in stock for my fine art photography prints, and I just fold the A4 size to make a print. (Cheaper papers tend to crack on folding).

Folding - Find a local craft shop if possible and see what they have for folding cards (the tool I have is unnamed, and the small UK company I bought it from no longer exists) - there are lots of articles online on folding paper for cards too. Alternatively your usual paper supplier may also provide prefolded cards, though these may slightly catch the print heads on the fold, leaving a dirty smear.

Depending on volume, and intended use, the cheapest option could simply be finding a local printer and talking to them. (or you cold upload to redbubble and order cards from them!)

Thanks Terry!
That's exactly what I needed - I hadn't noticed there was an extra icon for print propoerties at the right hand edge of the icon group! Good to see that layouts still work (the oldest is ten years old) - that means I don't need to retain a copy of Studio to print cards.
25  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / qimage ulitimate and custom print layouts on: June 24, 2013, 08:21:05 PM
For some things I do (mainly cards) I have predefined layouts that make it easy for me to have text, images, and layouts print in defined places on a page. On Qimage Studio these layouts were accessed by the 'custom' selection in the 'print poperties' section on the print page - in Ultimate there is no 'print properties' section on the print page that I can find.
Is there some way to toggle this on/off, or if not, how do you select (and create, possibly) custom layouts in Qimage Ultimate?
26  Mike's Software / Qimage / Re: Quadtone RIP on an R1800 - How to proceed on: June 09, 2012, 12:57:01 PM
the best general instructions for creating curves for QTR on the PC I'm aware of are still those from Tom Moore at http://www.quadtonerip.com/User%20Guide.pdf - though I've not looked for instructions for some years.

For printing with QTR from Qimage I simply output to file (TIFF format, since that used to be all that QTRgui would accept) for the size I want at an output resolution of 720 dpi (A3+ printers such as R2400 and presumably R1800) or 360 dpi (A2 and bigger such as Pro 3880), using the QTR_RGB_Matte_Paper or QTR_RGB_Photo_Paper profiles as appropriate.

Using the Colormunki with QTR is covered in an article at http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/article_pages/bw_printing/bw_print_colormunki.html which includes a very good test page for black and white printing.

I've not found a need to create a custom ICC file using QTR.

With a single black ink from a third party supplier, and papers from a different supplier designed for a different inkset and printer, the quality you can achieve may be limited. (I use Epson inks in a 3880, and a variety of papers from Innova and Permajet)
27  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: 48 bit (16 bit per channel) tiff output possible? on: April 10, 2011, 04:09:29 PM
I thought your previous comment meant that you saw the benefits of 16 bit output where people were not going direct to the printer, and had put 16 bit on the roadmap for Qimage Ultimate.

I use other tools for editing - I've tried to use Qimage (Pro and Studio) for this in the past and it doesn't work the way I want to, and there are some things it simply didn't allow. This isn't a complaint - I bought Qimage to do a specific job - layout, resize, and prepare for print - and that it does very well. Of the things you list, the only one that might be of interest to me is tone targetted sharpening.
28  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: 48 bit (16 bit per channel) tiff output possible? on: April 10, 2011, 12:03:30 PM
48 bit TIFF output from raw is on the list of to-do's for Ultimate.  While 24 bit is enough for a final image and for printing, I understand the benefits of being able to output 16 bit/channel if you intend to do further work (outside of Qimage).
...
Regards,
Mike

has this been added yet, or do you have a vague estimate of when it might be added, please?

I don't see anything else so far in 'Ultimate' that makes it worth upgrading, as I use Qimage almost exclusively for layout and final resizing, both of which I find it does a better job than the other tools I use, and for printing if I'm printing colour.
29  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Floating Text: Alignment with guide lines to the ruler? on: December 25, 2010, 11:34:19 AM
What kind of alignment are we talking about here?
What I asked for years ago, before the release of Qimage Studio, and was told would come with an update to text handling, was multiple lines of text (eg in an address) with the lines aligned left or right to same position (or possibly centred), and with equal spacing between the lines. Its basic text functionality, and just about impossible to do with Qimage.

30  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Floating Text: Alignment with guide lines to the ruler? on: December 17, 2010, 12:30:49 AM
Seems that I'm the only one with the need for exact text positioning....   Shocked
no, but I've given up expecting anything to be done about it.
