16  Mike's Software / Qimage / Re: Win7 installation: Can't drag and drop files into QImage 2010.209 on: December 08, 2010, 08:33:37 PM
FYI:

According to PC Magazine turning off UAC in W7 does not turn off all aspects of security.

In a non-related support forum it was posted that right clicking an icon with run-as-admin and setting a shortcut with an advanced property of run as admin had different effects.

We recommend that any application where the data files are in that same folder tree be not placed on any disk/volume under any program files tree so "program files" is not in the data access folder hierarchy.

We also found out that several antivirus/malware protection programs block inter application frequent access and must be set as "trusted". Kapersky and Norton suites are two.

On updating QImage it is a good idea to reset all options (from the help dropdown) and then reenter all of your preferences again including the default color profiles for your monitor and printer (for your paper and ink type that you created) you wish to use. If you have QImage Pro or better, look at the soft proof on your monitor as well to compare it with the print.

On the lower right of the screen mouse over the Job Properties line and it will display the color profiles that are current for the monitor and printer.

http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/downloadable_1/DL_page.html

has a number of test targets you can download. I suggest the one with the four models in the bottom row and the gray scale on the right. Unzip it into a test folder, edit it just to resize it as you wish (I do 4x6) without any other adjustments and save it. Now you can load it into QImage to test its printing quality. It is also a decent target to check your display quality.

http://www.sns.ias.edu/~jns/files/Canon_ICC_Profile_Guide.pdf is a guide for Win and Mac users on setting up Canon printer drivers but the ideas can apply to other drivers as well.

Make sure you are not double profiling. If you have the ICC profile being used in QImage insure that it is not being used in the printer driver by setting any icm to off and color management to none. All you need to set is page setup and paper type in the driver. Any color sliders should be set to neutral.

18  Mike's Software / Qimage / Re: Profile drop? on: November 04, 2010, 07:45:25 PM
Should be another thread but I'll reply.

I had a folder in which I had some test targets called Getty something that I downloaded in zip format. QImage would crash all the time that folder was accessed. They were created I believe with Macs. I did not get the warning, just a shut down of Q. After I reset everything in Q so it did not open that folder as last used it stayed open until that folder was accessed. Macs at some point in time in some formats use a different byte order than PCs and sometimes in network transport that order gets reversed. I think its tiff version is one.

Maybe my experience helps.
19  Mike's Software / Qimage / Re: Asterisk "*" in Enabled Collum - invalid ICC profile on: November 04, 2010, 07:37:44 PM
You can test profiles with these free tools from the ICC:
http://www.color.org/resource2.xalter

ICC Profile Inspector - opens an ICC profiles and makes the contents readable
Profile Dump - an example utility built using SampleICC that reads profiles and checks them for conformance

Most report some error but that is usually minor.

The version number is also important. In general for Windows as advised by my calibrator instructions monitor and input devices should be version 2 and print profiles should be version 4. Q did not have problems with version 4 but my editing software did.

In one case I did get the invalid profile warning on a printer profile I had used before. I recreated it with the same software and it was OK. So something corrupted the file.

Lot's of good information on the ICC site about profiles.
20  Mike's Software / Qimage / Re: Qimage Studio - tiny menus and text on: October 25, 2010, 05:26:03 PM
If you are using an LCD monitor you'll get better text by running at an even multiple of the native monitor resolution.

"Tiny" is relative also to the size of your monitor relative to the resolution used. On a 1620xsomething 4:3 resolution on a NEC P221W monitor, full 22 inch diagonal with 11.6 vertical, whatever the default font sizes are used by QImage Pro are easily read by me in full screen mode. The 4x3 aspect ration works well for canvas of the editor application I use and images are not distorted.

If the real estate for tool and menu structure if different in Studio requiring smaller fonts than my experience my Pro experience regarding default fonts then my Pro comment is of course not valid in your case.

21  Mike's Software / Qimage / Re: Printer error - Antivirus Application Interference on: October 11, 2010, 08:24:50 PM
If you upgrade an application version, many protection applications will see it as a new or modified application. You will need to reset this as a trusted application again in your protection software probably under trusted programs or trusted applications. This applies to more than Internet access.

They make look at version numbers and creation and modified dates to insure that the application has not been tampered with.

An antivirus application may also detect a potential threat based on "heuristics" and frequency of access to operating system services so the need to set QImage as a trusted application especially when upgraded is paramount. In VISTA and Win 7 access to applications on any disk under a Program Files folder is strictly controlled internally by Windows protection as well.

Glad Fred's idea sorted it out for you.

22  Mike's Software / Qimage / Re: Printer error on: October 11, 2010, 05:19:29 AM
Sometimes in the 64 bit versions of Windows 7 and VISTA security is really tough for files that have to grab device properties. Just as a guess create a shortcut to Q and right click properties, then advanced properties, and set it to run as an admin. Be logged in as an admin when you set this up. See if that helps.

23  Mike's Software / Qimage / QIMAGE PRO V2010-209 CRASH PREVENTION on: September 13, 2010, 07:42:12 PM
I could not reason out why sometimes it crashed on opening after a brief view opening thumbnails. I finally deduced it was relative to a specific folder I created of downloaded test targets. I could only open QImage after a full reset and then going into that folder.

I attempted to look at each with an older editor I have and on two from the same source in that folder it complained about the file format. I removed those two and QImage became stable.

On your next version could we have some kind of file opening error trapping dialog regarding the specific file name followed by a close if necessary?

It might have been reversed byte order in an older Mac saved .tif file or .jpg file. I recall the links as Getty Large and Getty Small.
24  Mike's Software / Qimage / Re: Custom Paper Size from printer driver not being picked up on: August 28, 2010, 04:05:33 AM
That can solve the problem if it occurs. Sometimes a new custom size in the printer properties will crash QIMAGE with its reset option dialog. Fortunately if I do have to reset everything then there are not too many parameters for me to set.

The printer driver is the latest for the Canon S820. I purchased a couple of days ago a X-Rite Color Munki spectrophotometer to create a printer profile that works with QImage. (I do not have a decent scanner on my XP workstation so it was necessary for the measuring device to provide its own light source.) Canon did not really provide one for this model.

Between the Color Munki and QImage the life of this quality six ink printer has been extended.

25  Mike's Software / Qimage / Custom Paper Size from printer driver not being picked up on: August 24, 2010, 07:48:52 PM
An old but useful Canon S820. I have set up the parameters for a custom sheet size of 5.5 x 8.5 inches with the intent of printing an image area of 5x8. QImage Pro in printer properties under custom will also not retain that size. My workaround for the moment is to choose the 5x7 and go with the wasted margin area of vertical 3/8 and 1/4 by a horizontal of 3/8x5/8.

The Win driver wrap shows custom as does the Canon printer properties with the custom size defined further down.

When using a custom size on the printer restarting QImage retains the previously chosen "standard" size.

Am I missing something?
