Thanks Fred.

Windows 8 is an odd one.  Have to hit the "Windows key" + X, then "Control Panel," then "Devices and Printers," then double-click Epson Stylus 3880, then shows "(4) Documents in Que," then clicking on it opens the "Epson Stylus Pro 3880 - Use Printer Offline" and it had "3 pending" and "One currently Printing." (Printer was off and unplugged too.). I could cancel the 3 pending ones pretty quick, but the one "Now printing" was hard to get rid of for some reason.  It took maybe a minute for it to delete (26MB in size).

One would think killing the computer and printer would cancel the jobs, but they stick like glue.

Anyways,  I still have the printer "off" and hope it doesn't have its own internal cache of prints remaining in it too.

Too bad there isn't an easier way to get to it cleared out and turned off without drilling so deep into Windows to cancel or clear them out - and they stick there too!

For some reason, the Epson 3880 keeps making prints even after being turned off and back on.  I clicked the rightmost icon to stop printing in QU, rebooted the computer, then installed some new Windows 8 Updates, rebooted again, turned off the printer, plugged it back in (USB cable), and it still keeps making prints when I turn it on.

Where do I clean out whatever and wherever the printer is storing the images?  I assume it is some buffer someplace that I need to flush out, but where?  It's trying to load paper now and print again The orange "Load Paper" light is on too.  QU isn't even running after this reboot either.

THIS IS MADDENING!

Weird stuff going on.

I just launched QU and got the Registration window message too.  Same QU 107 version.  Entered my email and another window about not being able to connect to authentication server issue (can't recall the exact server stuff.)Huh?  Then I got some 5 second removal of this window stuff after that trying to launch the program which used to work prior.

Re-loaded the same version again the registration window, but it took the email addy this time and seems to be working for the time being.

I did get the download email with the password and where to get it from from the alternate way of getting the software.  Seems to be something wrong with the verification server being down or something.  Dunno.

Hi Mack,
Quote
One little niggle I have with QI for generations is that with the black border fill on and if the "Info box" is checked, the info is in black type so it cannot be read.
You should have asked "generations" ago  Roll Eyes
You can change the colour of the Info text in Preferences, see attached screen shot.

Well. Well. Color me stoopid.  Roll Eyes

I changed the type to Silver so now I am covered for both White and Black background borders.

Thanks!

Oh.  The "poor girl" is more like a "rich woman."  She is near 30 yrs. old and works for $500 per day + expenses (Expenses = Hotel, eats, airfare, etc.).  She was on the road solid for 7 weeks with daily bookings so go figger how poor she is.  I tried to get more info but I got a headache calculating it out.  She speaks Cantonese and travels/models the world.  Lives a block from B&H Photo and pretty well known around there too. Pretty nice to shoot with a "Pro" which makes button pressing a whole lot easier - although modesty was not in her vocabulary either (like I objected!).  Gave the MUA-stylist on site some more 'canvas' to work with too.   Shocked

A "Refresh & Rebuild" of the thumbnails and set the RAW to "Default" and all is well now

My fault. I should have reminded you to rebuild thumbs to show the change.

I do have a question: just my curiosity, nothing more.
What is your intention with the print?   You are set for 5 x 7 borderless with crop scissors off which fills the top and bottom over the edge, but doesn't fill the sides...

Generally when I crop in PS CS6 I use some Framing Action that sets the borders.  In QI, I usually have the Black as a fill and not the White as shown in the screenshots.  One little niggle I have with QI for generations is that with the black border fill on and if the "Info box" is checked, the info is in black type so it cannot be read.  So I turn it back to white to see that if I check it. Might be nice if QI could figure out that with a dark color, the Info's type would switch to white somehow.

Quote
Just curious whether you make that print and then trim the white from the sides?

Naw. I just leave it Black or let the Framing Action set the outer frame to fill it in.  In the port books I have, the paper in them is black so the black edge isn't an issue.  Some of these frames for 13x19 are 12x18 Digital-sized so they cut it off automatically too.  Frames are still in old school sizes like 8x10, 11x14, 16x20, 20x24 and don't really cover the digital paper sizes well at all, especially A3+ 13 inchers. I hope they figure out soon these new printers are not those archaic paper sizes anymore.

I have another question. Why would you have a quick launch icon for PS on the task bar when you have Qimage Ultimate?

I used the quick launch as the screenshot I posted here was downsized in CS6 to fit the tiny 256K rez. restrictions on the attachments.

You can be charged with Indecent Exposure!!!

Actually, the model could have been in the later sequence not shown in the screenshots.  Seems it got too hot for her (104F that day) and she decided to try something, umm, different in her b-day suit.  It was fun to watch the MUA-stylist on site pass out too.  Grin

Fred,

Seems to be working now here with the D800E.

At first look, I saw the bars and it opened in square.  Did a "Refresh & Rebuild" of the thumbnails and set the RAW to "Default" and all is well now.  Both landscape and portrait open as they should.  Yay!

Thought it was odd that the 106 opened them in squarish mode over 105 which had the bars but didn't display them as squarish.  Oh well, least is appears fixed so Mike can go back to bed.  Wink

Terry,

Found an original NEF demonstrating the portrait NEF issue.

The black bar circled in red in the first NEF shows the image as a square on the right.  The other two NEF's in the viewer (dark images shot in Landscape mode) do not have the black bar and open normal sized as expected.

The JPG next to the black bar NEF one does not have the bar either and opens normally too.  The JPG was shot on the SD card and the NEF on the CF card.

Just checked the image in Adobe Camera RAW and no black bar is shown there. Windows 8 Photo Viewer doesn't show the black bar in the NEF either when opened.

Don't know why Portrait mode shots do it in Qimage, but landscape shots don't?

158  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: v2013.106 issues/comments on: December 12, 2012, 10:46:42 AM
Terry,

I discovered some oddity.

If the image is shot and shown in the portrait mode, and I can see the black/magenta bars at the top of the image in the Viewer or Browser window, then the image will open as a square in the the right pane window.  Double-clicking into Editor shows it normal sized along with the bars at the top.

However, if the NEF image was shot and displayed in landscape mode, the bars do not show in the Viewer and the image opens normally in the right pane and Editor both.

I don't know why turning the camera to portrait mode causes the black/magenta lines to show in the NEF files at the top in the Viewer, but no bars and looks normal if shot in Landscape mode.

Seems something happens when flipping from landscape to portrait causing this?  Huh?  I think there is something in the camera or software that knows to flip and display a portrait mode shot in a view pane in the portrait mode and not landscape? I can't recall if I flipped them into portrait display with the viewer or it does it automatically?  I think Windows or its viewer rotate the NEFs into the proper postiton and write something to the NEF so it will always do that?  Maybe that's where the bars and the odd square info is getting in from.  I dunno.

I also need to run images straight out of the camera and not process them in Capture NX2 also, but I think the ones on the external hard drive are unprocessed.  Will run some tests tomorrow straight out of the camera in portrait and landscape and some through ViewNX2 and Capture NX2 to see what happens with those bars.

159  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / D800E NEF is now worse. Image two. on: December 12, 2012, 02:06:22 AM
Now the new "Squarish NEF image" out of the D800E shown on the right.  It opens normally (4:3 ratio or whatever it is) in the Editor part.  I did the Refresh and Rebuild of the thumbnails to no avail.

The magenta and black lines are still showing in the upper part of the images though.  You can see a bit of it at the top of the washed out NEF's in the Viewer side.

160  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / D800E is messed up worse! on: December 12, 2012, 02:02:23 AM
Ugh!

Take 3 since files on this site must be less than 256KB total and not per image.

First is the TIFF which is normal in the right window.

Fred,

Maybe Mike and Corel both could use a marketing pitch like: "Our program allows you to use more 'uncropped' space of your sensor than Adobe and all others do which give your images a big megapixel haircut."  Cheesy

Or I might use it to annoy my club's D800 users with:  "Oh yeah?  Well my more expensive D800E has 0.23 megapixels more than your cheaper D800 does.  So Neener.  Neener!"  Grin

...maybe not the best ideas...

Mack,
Curious!
Did you receive any firmware upgrade for the camera recently?

Fred

Fred, yes it has the most current updates: A and B (A: 1.00 / B: 1.01).  The "C" one came later I think. That "C" one is some extra one that Nikon posted later than the first pair and they call it "Distortion Control Data" for cameras (Most of their DSLRs) that support it.  It is found here:http://www.nikonimglib.com/dcdata/index.html#os-windows

I saw in the current update (A&B) this:
Modifications enabled with this upgrade of firmware, release date May 29, 2012

When a still image was captured while viewing existing images in playback mode, the monitor turned off, the memory card access lamp glowed steadily, and, in some rare cases, the camera ceased to respond to operations. This issue has been resolved.
When the Wireless Transmitter WT-4 was used with certain settings applied, RAW images were also transferred when Wireless transmitter > Transfer settings > Send file as was set to JPEG only. This issue has been resolved.
A dark shadow sometimes appeared at the bottom edge of images captured with Active D-Lighting set to any option other than Off with Image area set to 5:4 (30x24). This issue has been resolved.

Maybe that last one?  Although it says on the bottom edge and this occurs on the right end as viewed in Landscape mode.  I don't see an issue there.

Adobe RAW on my NEF's shows: Adobe RGB (1998), 16 bit, 4312x7360, 36.2MP, 240ppi at the bottom of the ACR screen as mentioned already.

Odd why the D800 and D800E would be different sizes in reality though. Odd why they would allow more MP in the D800E if that is the case: D800=36.24MP & D800E=36.47MP if both are 4912 in height. Interesting trivia bit though.  Huh?

Glad to see Terry sees it too in his downloaded D800E NEFs and it isn't my camera acting up.  My fear is having Nikon work on it.  Shocked

Strange Mel's D600 shows the same bit of extra rope, but if it isn't supported yet in QU then it may "Need a haircut too."

However, in NEF files from a Nikon D800E
The D800E is not listed in the supported cameras. The D800 is and the samples images I have from that model are fine.
Terry
Terrry,

I thought it was supported since v2019.219 three versions back:  Huh?

v2012.219    Dated 07/04/12.

v2012.219 includes:

A major raw update that adds support for 31 new camera models:

    Canon PowerShot G1 X
    Canon PowerShot SX220 HS
    Canon EOS 5D Mark III
    Canon EOS 650D / Digital Rebel T4i / Kiss Digital X6i
    Canon EOS-1D X
    Casio EX-Z8
    Fuji HS30EXR
    Fuji F600EXR
    Fuji F770EXR
    Fuji X-Pro1
    Fuji X-S1
    Nikon D4
    Nikon D3200
    Nikon D800
    Nikon D800E
    Nikon Coolpix P7100
    Olympus E-M5
    Panasonic DMC-GF5
    Samsung NX20
    Sigma SD15
    Sigma SD1
    Sigma SD1 Merill
    Sigma DP1
    Sigma DP1S
    Sigma DP1X
    Sigma DP2
    Sigma DP2S
    Sigma DP2X
    Sony NEX-7
    Sony NEX-F3
    Sony SLT-A37
    Sony SLT-A57

It's a pretty obvious line in the D800E on the right-hand side.  Might be something to do with the anti-alias filter in that model over the D800 model, but shouldn't be there.

Fwiw, it shows as a "white & magenta" line in Corel's RAW viewer in their latest Paint Shop Pro X5 (v15.1.0.10).  In Qimage Ultimate 2013.105 it is a "black & magenta" line.  Both about 1mm in width running the entire right end.

The other 5 RAW programs I use do not show the two lines at the end of the photo, just QU and Corel's PSP X5 show them, albeit different colors.  Even Windows 8 Pro "Windows Photo Viewer" displays the D800E file without the lines at the right end correctly.  See attached photo below:

Also, I also just tried a NEF out of a D7000 and it is okay in QU and no two-color lines as above, just the D800E shows them.

164  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: v2013.105 issues/comments on: December 05, 2012, 09:14:55 PM
Don't know if this is an exclusive bug to v2013.105 or not as I'm still getting used to printing from a NEF file.

However, in NEF files from a Nikon D800E, there is some thin black and dark magenta/blue and black line that is approx. 1mm wide that appears on only the right edge of the images when shot in landscape mode.  The first line the entire length of the edge is the dark magenta/blue (maybe 0.3mm) and the second wider line adjacent is black (maybe 0.66 for a total of 1mm overall width.). The left edge is clean of the line(s).  It is visible in the Editor side too.

A NEF converted file to TIFF and printed does not show that line in the program.  Huh?

I'll try and attach a JPG showing the line (image rotated 90 degrees CCW from landscape so the odd color lines are up) that show the two color lines and the subsequent TIFF image from the NEF that doesn't show the lines.

Fwiw.

165  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Question on NEFs. on: November 11, 2012, 07:06:49 PM
I have a full-size MacBeth color card and the listed RGB values of White square (lower left) are average RGB values of 243, and the Black square is average RGB of 52.

A NEF photo opened in QU needs to have the Editor portion raised to Brightness=13 and Contrast=17 for the White & Black squares to match the above values in the "Curr. Color" box at the bottom of the Editor windows with the mouse pointer placed on those two squares.

Is this the correct method?  Huh?  The NEF images seem flat otherwise without the Brightness=13 and Contrast=17 boost above applied.  Subsequent prints seem to match the card doing it that way.

Also, I assume it is normal for a sRGB image to appear slightly reddish compared to Adobe 1998 images in the viewer portion too?
