I don't think you gain much--if anything--from the 16-bit driver.  Inks have a finite range that is much less than the eye can see.  Right now I think it is a sales pitch.

That said, I have been using ProPhoto for a long time but am slowly switching back.  ProPhoto with its larger gamut uses a 1.8 gamma where most others use 2.2 so you wind up making more adjustments in contrast, etc. to compensate for it.

Before re-inventing the wheel, checkout BreezeBrowser.  Much better (more professional without the amateur candy) than Thumbs or ACDSee, IMHO.

Also, IMatch for databasing is without equal if you have thousands of images.

Hawk Mountain papers.  I have even had some papers cut by them--42" roll to three 13" rolls.  Couple of dollars per cut.

You cannot cut glosy rolls though.

Another point - if using the gretag macbeth (sp) charts from Dry Creek, they have the colour values printed on the patch. Some* of those values are not correct (won't effect going colour to colour, but you may never get the values printed on the chart)

(* The first one I checked - 'pro photo' had one wrong value - never bothered after that)

If you open the chart that has an embedded profile, or requires a specific one, and you convert it, the colors may not match.  The color gamut has changed and something MAY HAVE been interpolated.

Doing some research on 16 bit printing, I think I answered one of my own questions.  My HP 8750 printer specifications say it can handle "TIFF 24-bit RGB Uncompressed Interleaved".  These are 8-bit files (8x3=24).  My understanding though, is that the driver automatically downsamples the 16bit files to 8bit, AT THE POINT OF PRINTING.

I also found this article by Mr. Chaney:
http://www.steves-digicams.com/knowledge-center/hype-or-hero-take-2-16-bit-printers.html

I think my course of action is to continue to work in a 16 bit environment right up to printing, and then convert from 16 to 8 bit before printing, regardless of whether I print from Qimage or Photoshop CS4.
Yes, leave it in 16 bit after you leave ACR.  Do not convert to 8-bit; nor should you re-size to 300ppi, 600ppi or anything else.  Beyond cropping (you can leave the ppi box blank) do not resize.  Let QImage do all the interpolation as it prints.  MUCH better than CS interp.

I think it's the consumer game.  Kind of like the Firewire 400 to 800 jump.  Perception Roll Eyes

Then again, it may have been mis-stated.

I thought that also as I watched it bounce back and fourth.  So I made sure it was selected.  I'll go back to it and play more.

However, re-reading the earlier part of the topic may give me something that would be even better.  I'll also play with white border plus an "edge."

Red River and Hawk Mountain sell sample packs at a reasonable price.  There are even variables in which sample pack you can order.  Hawk gives (used to) a discount with your first order after that that almost covers the samples.  I also bought a small sample book from them of the papers.

I really don't believe any one, two--or maybe three--papers are the nuts for everything.  Even B&W printers like Clayton Jones and Paul Roark use three or four papers depending on scene effect.

Even with color, I usually use a warmer paper for portraits and the colder ones for art or scenics.

Terry-

Is this merely some caching algorithm.  USB 2.0 has finite specs and true maximum transfer rates.  Just as SATA does not really transfer at 3GB.

I am starting to see references to USB 4.0 lately Shocked.

I fought magenta casts in Ilford pearl for years and finally gave up on it.  I don't know what causes it.

I have the same question about PP without the IT8.  I also have the Wolf Faust charts and data CDs.

Since I used the charts and sent the files to Mike so he could create new camera profiles, it would follow that he uses the same system.  I have both 8x10 and 5x7 charts.

Of course, it's up to Mike but I don't need more charts.  And, there is no way to trial PP.

Okay. I top them and print a CMYKRGB-Bk page every day when I am not using it.

I wrote your name on a cartridge so you get "used" every day.  As if this place isn't enough  Wink

Hmmm.  I'm on the latest release.  I just tabbed out of that box.  Maybe I have to "enter" out.

Mike-

I am getting ready to do the REAL full install.  I have a question about the whole admin thing.

Vista (or maybe Toshiba) created some bogus Administrator with a password you could not change.  Or, so they thought.  I used a Unix boot disk with a utility that let you delete/change/create one with new password and all fell into place.

Is WIN 7 doing this same Kabuki dance?? Huh?

Yeh, Fred.  Touchscreen on a 24" monitor.  I can see the new surgeons lining up to fix "monitor elbow."   Grin
