1  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Cannot get even borders on: June 18, 2023, 01:09:41 AM
Sorry if I break ettiquette, I'm new.

I've had my Canon PRO-1000 for a week or so, so that's probably the explanation right there. But I'm trying to print greeting cards on 6.25x9 RR stock. I didn't like the look of the .25" borders, so I found if I print my image upside-down I can get .125" borders on 3 sides, the 4th doesn't matter as it is blank white.

However, this works in preview, but whenever I actually print the borders are randomly uneven. I even tried making the borders in Photoshop and printing borderless, still a little more on one side or another, sometimes even the bottom border is crooked.

My first inclination would be that it's a paper feed issue, I'm not doing something there correctly. But I've burned through many sheets trying different ways of putting in the paper (one at a time, stacked, paper first then close sides, close sides first, then paper, etc.). Nothing seems to help.

Is it simply incapable of being accurate enough with .125" borders?

TIA for any help.

Is this Topic still open for discussion? I have been printing cards 7x10 folding to 5x7 for several years on my Canon Pro 100, and occasionally on my Pro 1000. Several hundred per year.

I have just tested 6¼x9 flat folding to 6¼x4½. With 1/8" white border. - See attached JPG for proof of concept.

Variation in the margin size is very small. Almost imperceptible, and with consistent feed on the Pro 1000. The procedure I am using will permit some fine-tuning of the adjustment for margin size.

If this is of interest to anyone, I will document the procedure with screenshots of the settings. The settings can be saved in Qimage U for easy retrieval.

I don't want to go to the trouble of documentation unless there is genuine interest.

Thanks Mike for your very speedy response.

Your diagnosis was correct, and I isolated the problem to files in a specific folder.

I was able to work around the content of that folder and can now troubleshoot the files in that  folder at my leisure and eradicate any corrupt files.

Everything else seems to be working fine.

3  Mike's Software / Qimage / Help needed with error message: Thread Error: The Handle is invalid (6) on: July 17, 2021, 02:48:52 AM

Suddenly I am getting a Qimage error with red X and message STATES: Thread Error: The Handle is invalid (6)

I have tried reinstalling, but did not change anything. Qimage is also running very sluggishly.

Running Win 10 home edition. I am not aware of changing any settings or other changes.

Still prints, but very sluggishly and images are extremely desaturated  -

Have not tried extensive trouble shooting and hoping the error message gives a quick fix on the problem.

Suggestions welcome.

I may have mentioned this before in this forum. I have this recurring nightmare.

Two heavily laden Brinks bullion trucks labour into Mikey's driveway and cut their engines.
A robot clicks and whirs its way to Mikey's front door and rings the bell.
When a startled Mikey opens the door the robot hands him a clipboard. The attached sheet of paper reads.

Get the attached "Windows Protected Your PC" and can't get beyond this screen when installing  QU21-100p.exe

Previously all updates ran smoothly and I have not made recent changes to my PC except for the Windows updates.

Use AVG Antivirus - Paid version. Disabling it for the installation did not help.

The only option is a "DO NOT RUN" button at the top right cancel "
Any suggestions appreciated. With the lack of specifics in the error message I do not even know where to start and experience tells me I only make matter worse if I try random changes.   Embarrassed Embarrassed

7  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Custom Size on new computer on: November 11, 2020, 03:49:24 AM
OK - I'm back and hopefully this is a viable solution.

If I read your problem correctly the task is to print on the PRO 100 an image area 8.125 inches by 10.125 inches on an 8 x11 sheet. You have not been able to do this because the fixed margins imposed by Canon give a smaller image size than the desired figure above.

SOLUTION: Set up your Pro100 as normal BUT in the page setup tab select borderless and where you select the option of "Amount of extension move the slider to the far left Minimum Position. This will have the effect of reducing the fixed borders to a smaller amount that will permit an image to be sized to 8.125x10.125.

I have used this techniques to print hundreds of 7x10 cards with smaller borders than the regular Canon defined borders so it should work for your size.

Hopefully the images showing this will reproduce well enough for you to see the concept.

Let me know if this solves tour problem

I see two things that could potentially cause this.  One is that the first screen shot shows "auto crop" is turned off.  That will make the print conform to the aspect ratio of the image: you'd have to turn auto cropping (scissors icon) on to get the exact size specified.  Also, I see you are using a Pro-100.  The printable area of a Pro-100 on 8.5 x 11 paper is 8.0 x 10.685 inches so it cannot print an 8.13 x 10.13 image unless the driver is set to borderless.  I don't think you have borderless activated in the driver settings because the first screen shows "Poster Mode" indicating that 8.13 x 10.13 is too big for one sheet of paper.

Regards,
Mike

Thanks Mike .... tried your suggestions but still cannot get the 8.13.

Turned on auto crop and went into the driver settings and chose borderless.

Though it seems every time I look in the driver settings, borderless is no longer checked.

I have a work around that is very simple. Unfortunately got a ZOOM conference in a few minutes, so will post the details with explanatory pics later this evening. Pretty sure it will solve the OP's problem.

9  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Qimage error - "Thread Error: The handle is invalid (6)" on: October 30, 2020, 07:51:54 PM
That is usually an indication of a corrupted image in the current folder where it is trying to display thumbnails.  To find the offending image, you could try viewing the thumbnails or switch to filename only (no thumbnails) and then view them if there are not too many.

Regards,
Mike

Thanks Mike,

Your answer helped me solve the problem. I think!

For the past week or so have been working on a collection of Macro Backgrounds all in one folder, and then printing them out for a collection.

Every time QU opened it was into that folder and I would get the error message. I did not realise the connection until your reply.

I have now moved the files to another folder and deleted the original folder. So far things seem to be OK with no error messages. Hopefully!

Regards.

10  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Qimage error - "Thread Error: The handle is invalid (6)" on: October 29, 2020, 09:11:39 PM
Can anybody help with the following error message from Qimage Ultimate:   "Thread Error: The handle is invalid (6)"

Running Windows 10 HOME on what is normally a very docile and well-behaved computer.
Intuitively feels more like a Windows Error, but only pops up when running Qimage Ultimate Which then becomes very sluggish.

I am not a techie and it is driving me crazy, and help appreciated. Was unable to post a JPG image in this message window.

11  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Question On Custom Printer Profiles on: September 15, 2020, 05:39:28 PM
It appears that a major factor has been to let the prints dry overnight!  Much of the reddish cast has dissipated.  There's still just a bit and I could adjust the profile accordingly.

(The screen was calibrated using the DisplayCal app with standard settings and I'm viewing the print with a color corrected 5K lamp.)

I'm not entirely sure where I'm looking for the color space in QIU.  I assume you're talking about sRGB vs Adobe RGB?  Where would I look for that? I'm not seeing either reference when I hover over the thumbnail. Does QIU take that into account?  The only thing I'm seeing in C1 is that the camera metadata is sent along with the image and my camera is defaulted to sRGB.

Thx

I, too, have noticed the Canon Pro 100 inks tend to change over time during the curing, drying process, or setting process. It is very visible for the first hour, and then settles more slowly to the final colour.

I am using third party papers and refillable cartridges so paper profiling is part of my regular workflow. If the image colours change over the first  few hours or so then the same "drying time" should be used between printing and then measuring the calibration sheet. I usually leave overnight before measuring.

Works for me, and I can see a visual improvement in my profiles if I wait before measuring. Your experience may be different.

I think these periodic reviews of useful features not frequently found on other applications are a great help and increase my functionality using Qimage.

I suspect I am like most people and get into a narrow rut using tried and trusted workflow procedures and shunning unknown variations. Then surprise - Fred shows us something that "hits the spot", but we did not know it till he showed us.

Fred's brief and to the point reminders have increased my flexibility and enjoyment using Qimage. So from my perspective - Keep them coming Fred and thanks.

13  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Canon Pro 10 30mm forced border work-around with fine art papers on: June 10, 2020, 06:12:35 PM
It's designed for the Pro-1, Pro-10, and Pro-100.  The Pro-1000 doesn't need it because the driver allows you to turn off the margin warning in the driver.  In the driver: Page Setup tab, Print Options button, and check the box at the bottom that says "Cancel the safety margin regulation for paper size".

Regards,
Mike

Is this definitely applicable to the Pro-100 which only has BLACK, GRAY, and LIGHT GRAY cartridges?

The method works as described on my Pro-100, but to my eyes the resultant print does not show any enhancements over straight matte paper using a regular profile. Possibly it is paper related. I am using Precision Color inks and tested on Red River Polar Matte.

If I am missing something I am happy to revisit my workflow, but don't want to vanish done a rabbit hole for less than marginal returns.

This site is an excellent resource for learning all the "wrinkles" to using Qimage to the Ultimate.

Thanks for all the help and keep safe.

All of the above plus look at the yellow through a blue filter. Complementary colours and all that.

A blue gel from a flash modifier, or even a blue glassine wrapper from a candy bar (candy translates as sweets for our Anglo friends) will do the job.

Wouldn't he call an Uber in Finland because Him a Finnish.   Cheesy

And I don't want any SPAM from OUTBACK. I know they are a good steakhouse. I want 10oz Fillet Mignon - medium rare on Fred's tab. Send it via Uber eats. Should make it to Ottawa in 20 hours or so.
