Have you tried sorting by NAMES + or - ?
Unless you are shooting Video, each shot should have a number of its own, No?

Fred

That only works until you change a filename...
32  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Thumb sort order on: September 06, 2010, 04:07:06 PM
Bottom line, I don't think it is possible to sort by date/time when shooting at 9 fps because the data is not there to support it.

Mike

Correct if you are only using the info out to the second. I asked Nikon "When shooting at high speed on a Nikon DSLR (D200-300-700), is it possible that the order of the shots taken will be incorrectly named? For instance, if I shoot 10 shots in 2 seconds, will they ALWAYS be saved in the correct order, i.e., 1 thru 10? Or is it possible the order will change so that they are not named in the shooting order?"

They replied:

"In regards to your inquiry, it isn't possible that the shots get named incorrectly"

so the story about saving files by buffer order is urban legend (or a malfunctioning camera). As I said, Nikon software does not have any problems with a date sort so they must be reading some other (or additional) field(s) for the date sort function. Nikon also gives you the option of sorting by either date created or date modified, ascending or descending. So you can always put your shots back into correct shooting order by date regardless of any name changes or edits, which is what I was hoping would be possible in QU.

Thanks for the replies. I've modified this response several times. Suffice it to say, I can't get them to sort in the correct order using the date +/- field in Edit Preferences section. Using a date/time field showing only date:hour:minute:second will not be enough to keep the files in order. If I'm shooting at 9fps that data will be written EXACTLY THE SAME 9 times to the card. There has to be another (or an additional) field to retain correct shooting order.

As an aside, I've started a ticket with Nikon to discuss MelW's comment about file numbers not being written in the order they were shot. As I shoot motorsports I really can't have shots coming out in some random order. Maybe it was a D200 thing...

Does QU use the time stamp as well as the date stamp when sorting? I ask because in QU when I  sort to  ~ date - ~ it does not seem to take into account the time stamp, only the date. This results in my cards downloading in a different order that the shoot. Camera is a Nikon D700. Thanks for any info you can provide. I don't remember this being a problem with Qimage Studio version.

Example:
Here's how they appear in the preview window (starting at the top left):
700_0375.nef
700_0376.nef
700_0373.nef
700_0374.nef
700_0377.nef
700_0380.nef
700_0381.nef
700_0378.nef
700_0379.nef

Per the "date created", the order should be 0381 thru 0373 with 0381 being in the top left of the preview window. It appears that QU is using the date I transferred the files from the card to my hard drive instead of the actual date created.
35  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: What can I back up? on: August 22, 2010, 04:38:09 PM
There's actually a menu item in the "Utilities" menu in Qimage that allows you to do that with just one click (and another click or two to confirm).  Just click "Utilities" and pick the bottom entry for "Migrate/Copy Application Data".  You can then point to the place where you want to back up the data and Qimage will copy all the application data there.  Once the copy is complete, Qimage will ask if you want to USE the new location.  Say "No" if you're just making a backup and you're done.

Regards,
Mike

I assume that if you say "no", you need to do a manual backup on a regular basis. That is, the program does NOT backup automatically? Now that would be a nice feature  Wink
36  Mike's Software / Qimage / Re: Epson 3880 settings for Qimage colour control on: August 21, 2010, 05:23:00 PM
As far as I know, there's no place in Qimage to select paper, <snip>
Fred

Actually, selecting the ICC profile in Qimage is akin to selecting the paper since you need to have the right paper icc selected. In the Epson driver you need to select the right paper "type" to control ink flow, among other things. In the Epson driver, settings in the "media settings" on the "main" page must be correct for the paper you are using. Be sure to set "mode" to "NO color adjustments". That will force Qimage to control the icc profiles. Then set the proper ICC profile in Qimage in the "Job Properties" under PRTR ICC. After you get it, SAVE the settings in Qimage as a Printer Setup.

Yes.  The decision is: it's a GO!  See the link near the bottom of the mini-FAQ for details: http://www.ddisoftware.com/qimage/minifaq.htm

Well, then, I'll have to buy it~ Thanks!
38  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: for mike: are the icc profiles included with the ultimate on: August 06, 2010, 05:10:19 PM
They're still extra.  I'm still considering offering those for free to Qimage Ultimate buyers who previously bought Studio.

Mike

FWIW, as a Studio user, I'd probably buy Ultimate if I could get the D700 AND the D300 profile included in the price.....
39  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Some grumbling going on over here... on: July 26, 2010, 03:00:57 PM
Sorry, I just can't let this pass...

re: "but some of the expectations are grossly unreasonable... and they have been for quite some time"

It seems to me that you, Mike, are the one who set up these expectations. I bought the product with the promise of free, lifetime upgrades. So please, don't accuse me of "grossly unreasonable" expectations - I expect to receive what I purchased and to this point I have.

re: "And let's talk about "unappreciated" for a moment.  You feel unappreciated?  Step into another mans shoes for a moment: mine to be specific.  I've supported customers for 12 years, providing free updates, stellar support, and even help in areas not Qimage...."

Again, YOU are the one who sold the product with the promise of unlimited upgrades forever for free. You're acting like you gave us a gift and now want one in return. Sorry - that's not how it works. I purchased a product with a guarantee, it wasn't given to me. So quit whining -- it's unprofessional...

As for the new product, I certainly agree that you have the right to offer it as a stand-alone program, apparently not related to the Qimage promise of free upgrades and charge whatever you wish for both the program and updates. I think I would have named it something other that Qimage Ultimate to avoid just what we are talking about at this point but that's your choice. I'll be giving it a try, but if the RAW conversion can't hold up to what I get with Nikon Capture NX2 , I won't be buying. FWIW, had I been given a 50% off deal, I probably would have upgraded without looking. I bought Qimage primarily as a printing program and have been very pleased with it. Features for editing and RAW conversion are just icing on the cake but we all know cake can be eaten without icing.
40  Mike's Software / Qimage / Re: Before trying qImage I have got 2 questions on: June 09, 2010, 02:10:42 PM
That is my impression as well. That's why I wondered why the OP "immediately disqualified" it. NX2 certainly has an excellent editing section once you learn it. And even after edits the original, unchanged NEF file is available. No offense to Mike, of course!
41  Mike's Software / Qimage / Re: Before trying qImage I have got 2 questions on: June 08, 2010, 04:28:19 PM
To the OP - just curious....what changes does Nikon Capture NX2 make to the original NEF file that you object to?

Couldn't agree more about the entire product line. I tried to use Apple computers more times than I care to remember, only to always return to the PC. "Cute" just doesn't work for me!

Thanks, I'll give it a try. Does seem weird as I haven't changed anything on the machine, no new programs, etc.....
