1  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: What's the BEST workflow for a lot of pictures? on: April 18, 2017, 08:39:22 PM
Thanks guys for your responses.

When I have a lot of pictures to work through, I don't want to have to go through the whole project multiple times.  That's why I'm looking for ideas.

This doesn't happen all the time, but frequently enough I will shoot an event.   I may have to do a lot of bracketing and so I have shots that will have eyes closed, and mouths with weird shapes, blurry or out of focus images etc.   I don't want to have to go through all 500 images and cull them down 400 in a separate tool just to load them into QI to do my rating raw refines, formatting/ editing image compare and then prepare them for the queue.

The Preview/Add to queue process is really useful, and I use that a lot, but if it had access to all of the tools I need as I proceed through the project, my life would be much easier and better organized.    I know what I'm thinking is really stretching things, but QI has morphed into so much more than the handy printing page formatting program I first used it for 14 years ago.    I can almost do everything I want in one program now.

I'll ponder this a while before writing up my proposal for the feature request.

Thanks again.
2  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / What's the BEST workflow for a lot of pictures? on: April 18, 2017, 02:15:12 PM
Hi,

I've been using QI since early 2000's and love it.

I was wondering what the best work flow for a large photo shoot would look like now in v2017.    I still struggle working with lots of pictures, and use other tools to do things like cull pictures that are out of focus and duplicates etc. and backup images to my NAS.   I would like to use QI as my primary tool from start to finish without wasting time going back and forth.
I would like to import images from my card, cull shots I'm not going to use, refine raw, create filter, edit in PS if I need to do something that I can't in QI, add to queue or on deck, backup images to my NAS, and then print.

How would you do it?

I'm hoping I've overlooked something, or someone has some ideas before I go and add what I'm thinking should be done in the QI Features Request.

Thank you for your suggestions?

Bob

Hi Terry,

Thank you for the ideas.

I have been trying to use it as a signiature, but having a bit of trouble building the mask.   I'll try the QU method you were talking about.

Thank you for the great support.

Hi,

I'm preparing some prints, and I have to place a logo on top of each image.  The logo is a PSD file with a transparent background.

What would be the bet way to achieve this?

Thank you in advance,

Bob

No worries about ruffling feathers.  I just appreciate the support.

No,  but I just updated to the latest, reset all the application settings and started from scratch.  It worked fine this time.

Here is what did exactly:

1. I set my printer properties (this time print to file 4x6, 320 dpi to go to costco.
2. selected "Landscape Page" button so it would look like I want it.
3. selected "new print size" button to bring up the Print Properties selection dialog.
4. selected Fit to page
5. Dropped my background image onto the page.
6. selected "new print size" button to bring up the Print Properties selection dialog.
7. selected 3x5
8. Added the template to the page.
9. Click File menu, then save to bring up the Safe dialog box.
10 Then I selected L for layout, and entered the file name for the layout, and clicked save.
11. Next I right clicked on the page area, and cleared the queue.
12. Next I clicked on the  "new print size" button to bring up the Print Properties selection dialog.
13. I clicked the "Custom" item to bring up the "Special Sizes" dialog box.
14. I selected the "Layout" radio button and clicked "OK". (leaving everything else as default)
15. I selected my new layout file "bob4x6.tpl" and clicked Open.  Everything looks good.  I seem my background as I expect it to, and I have the Template in the middle where I will drop kids pictures one by one.
16. I started adding kids pictures to the template.
17. did a page edit to get the picture in the template the way I want it, and then click done.
18. Click print
19. clicked "Auto naming" (NOTE: RIP check box is not checked)
20. clicked ok.

The print worked fine......    So. I guess resetting everything made the difference.

I swear, I did this a bunch of times and it was doing this to me on two different computers.

The good news is that it works perfectly now, and I have had a lot of practice with Layouts!

Thank you again guys for your support.

Bob

Thank you Fred and Terry.

That is what I was doing exactly, except I only had one template box I was sticking kids pictures in.

I had it happen on two computers.

I'll do a reset of Qimage, and try it again from scratch.    Hopefully, I won't have the problem again.   I'll post my results.

I have more information.

If I make a simpler layout without a background image and one image template, then it will  print to a files properly.

I think this is a bug.   This seriously limits the abilities of using layouts.

Hi Fred,

Thank you for the quick reply.  That box isn't checked.    If I check it, I get all of the components of the layout .    If I don't check it, I get just my background image, and several white empty images.  It's very strange.

I tried using "user naming" option, and it does no better.

I've explored all of the options so far, and nothing works.
9  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Prints from Layout won't "print to file" on: July 30, 2015, 03:19:03 AM
Hi,

I need help.   I am using Qimage Ultimate 2016.105 to process a bunch of kids pictures for a children's activity, and I need to put their portraits on a 4x6 print so its centered in a rubbery foam craft frame.  This seemd to be the perfect use of qimage "layouts".

I created a layout by putting a background image on the page, setup the size for the print area and added the "template" image to the page and centered it.   After I saved it as a layout, I cleared the queue, and specified the custom layout and started adding my prints.   I added a few of the kids images, and printed them off on my ink jet printer.  They are perfect.

The problem is that when I went to create the image files to send to the Costco printer, qimage is writing out all of the components of the layout; background, image, blank page, template etc. as separate images.  Not once is the whole image as shown in the print queue written to the file as the images were printed to my local printer.

Does anyone have any idea about what I'm doing wrong?

Thank you,

Bob
10  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: Windows 8.1 & 16 bit printing in QU? on: February 01, 2014, 09:34:49 PM
Hi Mack,

I found one reference using google of someone printing using the Canon XPS drivers (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=944235) and he says he is not having any problems.  I suspect it's not really buying you anything.

Looks like you are breaking new ground.  Mike always challenged people to show the difference between a properly printed image from Qimage with one printed in PS using the 16 bit plugin, and I think it's still true that nobody has demonstrated to him that there is any advantage.  I'd be curious to here of any successes in this.

I would suggest trying printing in PS with the 16 plugin, and in Qimage with the XPS driver, and with the standard drive and see if  there are differences.

Hope you have success.
11  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: What is Qimage Ultimates internal/working color space? on: February 01, 2014, 09:20:44 PM
Hi Mike,

Thank you for wading through all that techno babble for the rest of use and giving a decent concise answer.  I haven't used PP for over a year, but not that I think about it, I hadn't created an Argyllcms profile in over a year.  I typically try both.   The think I like about PP is the opportunity to refine the profile.   In the end though, I use my profiles from my Pulse DTP20 and Argyllcms because I'm happier with my test prints with it.

For anyone who doesn't want to invest hundred of dollars for dedicated profiling equipment and want to take a stab at profiling their printers (scanners, and cameras also), Profile Prism does an amazing job if you have the right printer, and software that will do a raw scan of the it8 target and the printed target.

I don't know if I will pay for PP support this year.  Maybe after the next upgrade.   Also, I don't have the software to read the raw images or my canon lide scanner any more.

Many thanks to everyone for responding to my question.  I'm always learning from you guys.

Time to make some prints with Qimage Ultimate!

12  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: What is Qimage Ultimates internal/working color space? on: February 01, 2014, 12:25:11 AM
I have used Argyllcms for a long time, and I must admit that I don't understand all the technical aspects of color management.  I understand that I want to print my targets without color management specified in the driver, and that when I've built my profile, I specify that in QU and it's applied to the final print whether it's printed locally or sent off to the lab.

I've had a lot of success with Argyllcms and thought I would ask about this as I was reviewing the workflow for creating the profiles.    One of the options that is shown in the "typical usage" instructions is the -S which is a source profile.   The explication is rather complex and I must admit I don't really understand it.   I believe Mike would understand it.

(excerpt from http://www.argyllcms.com/doc/Scenarios.html#PP5)

"Where the resulting profile will be used conventionally (ie. using collink -s, or cctiff or most other "dumb" CMMs) it is important to specify that gamut mapping should be computed for the output (B2A) perceptual and saturation tables. This is done by specifying a device profile as the parameter to the colprof -S flag. When you intend to create a "general use" profile, it can be a good technique to specify the source gamut as the opposite type of profile to that being created, i.e. if a printer profile is being created, specify a display profile (e.g. sRGB) as the source gamut. If a display profile is being created, then specify a printer profile as the source (e.g. Figra, SWOP etc.).  When linking to the profile you have created this way as the output profile, then use perceptual intent if the source is the opposite type, and relative colorimetric if it is the same type."

I had seen a lot of other folks documenting this process were using aRGB instead of sRGB.   My original question might actually not be relevant or useful.    I might experiment with a number of differnet profiels there to see what happens.

I've use PP before, and wasn't always happy with the results or the workflow.   I update every once in a while.  I do love the profile editor.  I wish Mike would make it usable on profiles created by other tools.

Thank you for all of your answers.

Aha,

That makes sense.   I typically do use Mikes camera profiles, so I guess I could use that as the source profile.

Thank you very much Fred.

14  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / What is Qimage Ultimates internal/working color space? on: January 30, 2014, 08:15:54 PM
Hi,

I'm creating some new printer profiles using Argyllcms, and one of the options for creating the profile is to select the "source" color space.  I do all my printing with Qimage, and previously just used srgb.icm as my source color space for my profiles, but I'm curious, and wondering if there might be a better option.

If my images typically go from Raw to print in Qimage Ultimate, what would the the internal or working color space that the images are being converted from before being converted to my printers icc profile?

Thank you in advance,

Bob Coss
15  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / IPTC Batch Editing on: September 03, 2011, 02:07:36 PM
Hi Mike,

I'm looking for a way to apply IPTC tags and data to all of the files I have selected when I start editing.   Would it be practical to have an option to apply tags to all of the images selected, and then alternatively be able to use the next button to add photo specific data.

Is there a way to do this now with QU?
