Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: v2016.131 issues/comments

I agree this looks like a significant change. There have also been other RAW changes recently that also look to be important. When these changes are made I assume it is necessary to rebuild the RAW cache/thumbnails to apply them to every image?
Thanks

Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: smart colour

Thanks Fred/Terry, most useful. In general it does the right thing and I can now see that sometimes additional tweaks might be useful in Sel.Color. It was perplexing originally because even though smart colour was applied on import the Sel.Color tab showed no indication of it being applied.

Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / smart colour

I to and fro between Lightroom and Qimage. However I keep being pleasantly surprised at how well Qimage does with my photos without any additional adjustments for RAW. Lightroom has a new 'dehaze' feature that looks quite useful - but actually, Qimage does a pretty good job of reducing haze anyway. I will try and post some comparisons.
Anyway - my question, when I import a photo smart colour is applied. Once imported I can edit it using the Sel.Color tab. At this point I can seem to apply smart color again by clicking on the colored globe and it will come up with some suggested adjustments. These settings are all 1 to begin with giving the impression smart color has not been applied on import. I assume it has been applied - could someone confirm that to be the case? If so, it would be useful to see what values were applied on import in the Sel.Color tab as that would form a useful basis to make further adjustments.
Thanks
David

That's great - I wasn't aware of that; very useful. That gives me a much better starting position from which to make any adjustments. That deals with (all) the few tricky ones I have...
Great stuff - thanks all!

Thanks Terry - yes, that does improve matters a lot. I know there is some vignetting, but the other two RAW converters do a much better job of controlling it. Having said that, this photo was one of very few troublesome ones and I was interested to see what Qimage could do; and how to approach editing it. Many thanks for you time and suggestions - it has helped a lot.
All the best

Thanks Fred. That does reduce the posterization, which was important. The downside is loss of sharpness across the photo and there is significant vignetting that I don't see in other processors (LR, Sony Image Data Converter). I can live with the odd 'rogue' photo that doesn't work as well in Qimage as the vast bulk are spot on.

Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / RAW refine question
|
on: August 31, 2014, 02:52:12 PM
|
This is my 'edit photos' day I think - hence the questions!
I mentioned before that the RAW conversions in Qimage for my new Sony RX100 M3 are really good. Almost all are processed perfectly and don't need any adjustment.
There are a few photos (out of >300) where things don't quite work out. These few photos tend to be ones with lots blue sky and I can get some significant blue posterization in the corners. I can't seem to deal with this issue in RAW refine or the image editor - the conversions already applied to the photo have 'done their work' and I can't unwind them. What are my options when it comes to dealing with such photos - is this a case where Qimage won't work so well and I can't recover the quality photo I need?
These problem images I can deal with better in Lightroom or Sony Image Data Converter (but neither do as well by default on the vast bulk of my images as Qimage).
Thanks again,
David

Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / DFS question
|
on: August 31, 2014, 02:19:58 PM
|
I'm a bit confused about when DFS is applied. I shoot RAW and the default DFS is 2 @ 150% on import (as set in the RAW format options in preferences). If I then go to the image editor the DFS boxes are both set to zero. Has the image in the image editor already been sharpened and setting sharpening there is in addition?
I'm obviously missing something I would would appreciate it if someone could enlighten me.
Thanks!
David

Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: supported cameras - RAW

Thanks Mike - that makes sense from the quality of the images I am looking at in QU; they really are outstandingly good. I am really impressed by how well the raw defaults work across a very wide range of image types, including some really tricky ones.
Thanks again - much appreciated.

Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / supported cameras - RAW
|
on: August 25, 2014, 02:14:40 PM
|
Hi
I have a new Sony RX100 M3 and have been shooting some raw photos and editing/printing them in Qimage Ultimate. The results look great. I see however that this camera is not yet supported in Qimage/dcraw (the M1/M2 is). My question is what does Qimage actually use in such a case - the M2 version or some other default?
Like I say I'm happy (and impressed) by what Qimage is doing but I want to make sure that I won't have to do lots of later edits if/when the camera is supported.
Thanks
David
