My scanner software tracks the images you kindly attached, but for the Advanced Mode setting in Preferences/Scan.  It doesn't contain the "enable 48/16 bit output" text.  Is this assumed, or of concern?  (I do appreciate you guys' support!)

Many thanks to both of you for your prompt and helpful replies.  I'll see what the scanner software can furnish.

I've examined the material available, and although I am very interested in profiling my printer, cost is of concern to one on a limited budget.  My OS is W7 64bits, and my scanner is a Canon Canoscan4400F.  For what it's worth, I use PSE as my photo editor.

I've read the cautionary message about the perils of using a Canon scanner, but wonder if with the passage of time that is still relevant.  In fact, I just downloaded the current drivers for the scanner, and they are of very recent date. (Perhaps the update obviates the clipping problem mentioned.)  What I'm saying, I guess, is that while I've made my mind up to bite the financial bullet for Prism, the additional $50 or so to buy VueScan would constrain me from going ahead.

I'd appreciate your opinion as to the 64bit question, as well as the scanner issue.

Many thanks for your time and help.
