Great article, Mike.  I've bookmarked it for future reference when it's time to upgrade my monitor.  Thanks.

Great column Mike and good reality check.  My first digi-cam captured 1.5M images which produced very nice 8x10 prints until I learned that such a thing wasn't possible without many, many more megapixels.  Smiley

Hi Eric,

I agree with Terry's suggestion about using a fixed exposure instead.  Also, if you're not already doing so, shooting in RAW can give you more latitude for adjusting over or under exposures so the exact metering is not as critical.

Thanks again for the feedback.

Another question.  Does the lens accept standard glass filters?

I have had the LX3 for some time now and find myself grabbing it about 50% of the time - especially when I don't want to take the 40D, I shoot a lot of wide angle and the quality is remarkable in raw. I also have played with the picture modes, something I have never done before and dfind some of them very helpful. Nice camera at a good price.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.  Jim, Do you find the camera reasonably responsive while shooting in raw?  Also, how is the auto-focusing in low light?

Having just gotten a G1, I personally like the electronic viewfinder.  Honestly, it isn't lag free and it's a bit noisy in low light, but I think the benefits outweigh the drawbacks.  I'll go over more of that in my June article, but my general impression is that the electronic viewfinder on the G1 is very capable.  Outdoors or in very bright light, I really don't even notice the difference from a traditional optical viewfinder.  Indoors in even the most subdued lighting, it still looks reasonable: even though noise starts to show up, it doesn't detract from what you are doing unless you specifically look for it and lag at that point is, again, noticeable but not distracting.  Now, if you point it under a desk in the shadows, it gets really laggy and noisy but to be honest, if you aren't shooting a moving object it does better than my other dSLR's because while it is noisy and laggy, it is much brighter!  You can actually see details on the objects even better than the naked eye.  So the electronic viewfinder may have fewer drawbacks than you thought, or at least far more benefits than you had realized until you start using it.  Things like having a real time histogram display in the viewfinder and ability to scroll through and use all the camera menus through the viewfinder are just icing on the cake.

Your response above inspired me to find out more about the G1 and I found a great review at http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonicdmcg1/ for anyone else who is interested.  In addition to the innovative viewfinder, it also appears to be capable of producing extremely well exposed and very sharp images.  I look forward to reading your hands-on review next month.  Thanks.

Interesting article.  The one item that concerns me the most about this concept is the digital viewfinder.  I understand why its needed in this type of system but I've never seen one that was as clear, sharp, lag free, detailed and invisible as the current mirror/prism based viewfinders.   However, for those who have never experienced an optical SLR/dSLR viewfinder, a digital one may be perfectly acceptable for their first dSLR.  Have there been any significant improvements in digital viewfinders recently?

Congratulations & thanks, Mike.  I've learned a tremendous amount from some off-topic threads you so generously allowed to live on the Qimage, Studio and Profile Prism forums and I look forward to doing a lot more of that here without the guilt. Smiley

First, let me start off by congratulating Mike on putting together this new forum.  I am really looking forward to following various discussions here that don't exactly fit into the Qimage & Profile Prism lists.

I'm looking for a digital camera to use when I don't feel like grabbing my DLSR and the Panasonic LX3 caught my eye because of its reported excellent low light capabilities (wide aperture lens, image stabilization, large sensor, etc).  I also like the fact that I can shoot in RAW and that the camera has a full complement of manual controls in addition to the auto modes.  I've also been very impressed by the quality of the pictures it produces across the ISO range.  I know that it has a relatively small 2.5 zoom range but for me the 24mm wide angle makes up for that.  One thing that does concern me, however, is its speed of operation.  I can't find any in stock around Baltimore so I haven't been able to pick one up and try it for myself so I thought I'd ask if anyone else on this forum has one and would like to comment on the camera.

Thanks,
Ralph
