1  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Re: "WARM" B&W printing on: August 13, 2014, 07:00:46 PM
Thank you very much Ernst for the very detailed explanation.
For now my B&W printing is not such to require a dedicated printer and QTR is above my current expertise level (and time I can dedicate to it)

Appreciate the help

Hello all,
I did a search before posting, I did not find an answer to this, but feel free to point me to the appropriate post if already discussed.

I am using the Epson "Ultra Premium Presentation Matte", obviously with the MK ink.
When I print B&W (without enabling the ABW driver) Qimage does a very good (at least to my eye) job with the smoothness of the blacks, but I have noticed that it also uses some of the colors in the gray/light gray areas, to keep the image more neutral I think.

However, under certain lighting conditions and certain shades of grey, I can see a small color cast, typically towards the blue.

Is there a way to tell QImage to not strictly use only the MK, LK, LLK inks ? I do know and realize that this will give a warm tone to the image, but I'm OK with it.

EDIT: also the Epson ABW driver does the same, and in terms of actual print quality QImage is, in my opinion, superior to QuadTone

Thank you very much

Hello Mike

Thank you to you too for looking into this.
Alas the issue is still there.

If you want I can pm you or Fred with a link to a picture that shows the issue so you can try with the exact picture?

Thank you

Hi Fred,

Yes, this is exactly what I am (would be) doing.

I disable the border and print the poster to file.
Then on each of the poster images I print to the final paper size, adding back the mirror borders.

At least in theory. The theory is ruined by the fact that the edge images has those white pixels I showed earlier.

Did you download the sample image I posted? If you open it, you'll notice that the right and bottom areas have sections of completely white pixels, as if there weren't enough and the program just finished the image with enough pixels to make the picture complete.

Let me know if it is still unclear

Thank you,
Marco Brambilla

Hello again Fred

Having bought the registered version, I can now confirm that v2014.240 solves the issue. I have been able to print directly to TIFF

By the way, I think in another message you were wondering why 360, which is a resolution quite high, especially when resizing an image by 500%
The reason is that I have analyzed a few services (I wish I had a 44" printer at home...) and the RIP or driver they use does not do a very good interpolation, so I want to send them something as good as I can get it with QImage.

Thank you for the support.

Hello Fred,

First of all, thank you for your responses. Seeing how you guys support your product, I just went ahead and bought it (please note I used a different email address than the one I'm registered with here on the forum)

I am at a loss about you being at a loss Wink

Jokes aside, we are talking about two different topics.

- The technical problem is that QImage leaves a 10-pixel (approximately) white row at the extreme right and bottom of the image that is partitioning in poster mode.
If you wish, I can send you a test image, or we can do a Webex session where I can show you what I do.

- As per the why I do it, this is because I want to create a poster made of canvas stretches. In order to do this, I use QImage to print a 3x3 poster from the initial image, then further process each of the images to add a mirror border on the canvas. However, because of the white line, the images at the right and bottom edges have issues.

I have uploaded to my OneDrive account an example so you can see exactly what I am talking about: http://1drv.ms/1yYFZeI

Again, thank you for your help, it is greatly appreciated.

Hi Fred

yes, sorry. obviosuly posting something at 2 in the morning is not conductive to good explanations.

Let me explain again:

I have my source image, 3447x2298
I am in Print to File mode and I select a paper size of 12x18

I add the picture in the

Thank you Fred for your reply.
You are right, I missed some important information, sorry!

I have win7x64, with 12 GB of Ram.

I am selecting a jpg image, source resolution 3447x2998

In the Print to File I select 60x40, 360 dpi, sharpen 5.
I browsed into the folder, so am adding the image directly from the QImage GUI, clicking the "+" sign.
I then select fit to page in the menu in the lower-right corner of the image in the queue.

In the Print to File window I select JPG, quality 95 and select a directory on the C Drive.

The one item that might be worth mentioning is that the drive I'm using is encrypted by TrueCrypt

The result of Help|Analyze is:
Start: 2147 MB
Addl: 1265 MB
Now: 838 MB

Windows Resource Monitor claims I have 4.4GB of Ram in standby and 2504 free, for a total available of 6981 MB

Thank you again
Marco

10  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Resizing & split, second doubt on: June 28, 2014, 09:33:54 AM
Hello again,

this is another thing I am not sure I understand.

I have an image whose size is 3447 x 2298.

I tried two different "mosaic" settings:
print (to file) to 60x40, using 10x8 paper, 360 dpi
print (to file) to 54x36 using 12x18 paper, 360 dpi

The first case is perfect.
The second case generates images in which the resulting mosaic has the leftmost column composed of 5 columns of white pixels, same for the bottom row.

I noticed because when creating the mirror border for stretching i have a white area at the fold.

I am not sure if this is clear but Mike, if you want i'll be happy to send examples.

One last note: I am using v2014.239 demo version, as I'm still evaluating if I can indeed use QImage instead of another software

Thank you again

Hello everyone (and Mike)
I'm finally getting back to QImage after a three year hiatus, I have to say I find Ultimate a definite progress.

I agree that the resize algorithms, I think they are much superior than the other famous competitor.

However, I have a question: I am expanding a picture to 60x40, because I need to send it to a service.

Ultimate does the job, but if I select a resolution that is for example 360 dpi terminates with an out of memory error.
At 360dpi the image size would be around 0.9 GByte, so it shouldn't even be a problem of 32 vs 64 bit data structures.

The error above happens if I save in jpg (quality 95)
If I try to save TIFF, I receive a message that not enough disk space is available, even if I have 1.3 TB free on that disk.

Interestingly enough, even if the I got the error, the jpg file was saved and I can open it in GIMP with no issues

Am I doing something wrong?

Thank you
