Beautiful shots ................ Would like to see some raw images in Capture One - I bet they are incredible!

We are flying down to Ft. Myers - probably the 1st week in October.
Would you like to hook-up one day?

Yes, I am a Red Sox fan. My Dad was the head groundskeeper when I was a kid .............. it is in the blood.
It was a totally different world in those days. The players would actually come over to our house and eat dinner with my family.
I can still remember the 1st time I met Ted Williams. He was a Big guy.
I am not like most fans - I have respect for other teams and players.
The Rays have had some great teams and we have actually gone to a Red Sox - Rays game in Tampa.
We had fantastic seats - 6 rows from the visitor dugout and not INSANELY - EXPENSIVE, like they are at Fenway Park.
Actually, even though the Bosox never won until 2004, my favorite teams are the ones from the late 1960s and the 1970s.
Those were the years of the true rivalry between the Bosox and the "Evil Empire".

How do you buy roll paper at Walmart? I didn't even know they sold it.
Do you have an Epson 7890?

Any place to rent a 400mm lens and a tripod down there? I hate bringing camera gear on the airplane.
I have had so many bad experiences with TSA. They destroyed an entire box of 4x5 Fujichrome film when I went to Oregon

I live in NJ and I was born in Boston.

My wife and I like to go to Naples, FL and we may go next month.

How do you like the 400mm Canon L? My friend says that lens is great for birds.
I rented a Nikon 80-400mm VR a couple of weeks ago to photograph a Boston Red Sox game at Fenway Park.
I was quite disappointed. I had better results last year with my 300mm Canon f4 L on my trusty old Canon 5D.
There is just something about the old sensors with the "Fat" pixels.
My friend has a 25MP Phase one digital back on his Hasselblad 503CW and it produces beautiful images.
I borrowed the back/camera a couple of times and the files are razor-sharp when viewed on a 27 inch IP-S panel.
They put the 24mp Nikon images to shame.

The new 60-80mp digital backs require special high-resolution optics from Rodenstock and Schneider that literally cost $5k to $10k!
This is the price you pay when you pack all those tiny pixels into 645 size sensor. The Nikon D800 has the same problem.
You require new lenses designed for 36MP sensor.

Where do you buy your roll-paper and Epson ink from - "The Box Shippers".
This is what my friend in the UK calls B&H Grin

I started using 4x5 and 8x10 cameras when I was in the US Army Signal Corps in 1970.
After graduating from the 84G20 class at Fort Monmouth, NJ, I worked in the photo lab unit and also ran a mobile photo lab on a deuce and a half truck.
I was able to use fantastic equipment, such as color processing systems, Omega enlargers, Rodenstock Rodagons and Leica M4 cameras and most importantly the wonderful Leitz optics. The US Army also had Graflex 6x9 rangefinder cameras with Zeiss Biogon, Planar and Schneider lenses. 35mm SLR cameras from Topcon, Nikon and Pentax.
We were actually using flash bulbs with the 4x5 and 6x9 cameras - I can still remember the heat from the just-fired bulbs in my pocket!

I did weddings and portraits on a part-time basis after leaving the US Army and stopped doing these after about 20 years because I was totally burned out. I still don't like going to weddings - done too many and they are too "cookie cutter".

Since then I have used DSLR cameras from Canon and Nikon. I am old school and I still like to buy cameras based on the optics I prefer.

I like to photograph macros and landscapes and I still enjoy using tilt-shift lenses for perspective control and extended depth of field.

What are your favorite photographic subjects and what do you currently use for cameras and lenses?

All the best,
Mike

Hey Fred,

Now you know why I am worried about wasting paper .................. Expensive - but beautiful ............ looks like the old Ilford Galerie black and white photo paper I used when I was shooting 4x5 film. Yes - I am that old!

I am using the profile in Qimage.

What paper do you like from Epson that is similar to the HAHNEMUHLE PHOTO SILK BARYTA?

I would like to get a 100ft roll.

What do you shoot?

Take care,
Mike

Hey Fred,

You are too funny ................. Just like me - They call me the Joker!

One other question: Do I have the paper I am using setup properly?
It is HAHNEMUHLE PHOTO SILK BARYTA 310GSM 24IN X 50FT ROLL 3IN CORE.
I used the ICC profile for it in Qimage.

OK - I forgot - 2 questions:

Have you ever used the Jon Cone inks instead of the Epson OEM inks?

I seem to be going thru much more ink than I thought I would.
Perhaps it is because I have been printing incorrectly and wasting tons of paper.

I thought it would be a good option for me since I have tons of exhibition prints I want to print.

Thank you for hanging in there with me!

Fred,

I am an old, tired idiot! I should use the settings you just posted and not change anything in Qimage?

Thanks,
Mike
Mike,

Everything is wrong..
You have the wrong ppi reading because you changed the size twice in the driver.
No check marks in the Page Layout tab... you have a check in Reduce Enlarge and another in Fit to Page.
Then you use USER DEFINED, but  did you define the page on roll paper or did you select some Arch C size paper which seems to be 18 x 24.

Quote
I am totally confused. I was able to print (2) 11x17 portrait orientation prints on my Epson 7890 using 24 inch wide roll paper.

That was your opening line. 24" roll paper.

So you need to set the roll paper size to user defined... and set user defined to 24.02 x 18.00

Then you need to remove all the things you changed in the Page Layout tab making it look like the sample I sent you.

Make sure it says OUTPUT SIZE SAME AS INPUT.
Otherwise you get a pair of shoes with a 12 D size for the left foot and a 9A for the right foot.

Hope we have it this time.

Fred

Thanks Howard.
I am going to try again now.

Although our printers are different, you just might find your answer hidden in the recent thread, "Portrait orientation when I want Landscape".
Good luck.

Hi Fred,

Thank you very much for taking the time to help me!

I have Qimage setup as in image 130. The Qimage template appears exactly as I have them setup in the Epson print preview.
When I click on print, the image goes to the printer as in image 131.
I have to click the little button to rotate the print or I have to setup the custom print size in the driver or both?
Sorry, I thought the program would be WYSIWYG.
Should I take some screen snaps for you?

Thanks!
Mike

I am totally confused. I was able to print (2) 11x17 portrait orientation prints on my Epson 7890 using 24 inch wide roll paper.

I returned from vacation and the trial had expired. I paid for the full version and installed it and now the 11/17 portrait prints are being printed in landscape mode and I am wasting a great deal of paper.

Can anyone please help?

My wallet thanks you ................ lol

Thanks,
Mike
