16  Technical Discussions / Printers / Panoramas - Canon iP4500 on: February 21, 2010, 04:18:39 PM
Hi folks,

I use two different printers with QI - an HP B9180 for larger size prints and a Canon iP4500 for more "routine" stuff.

Using an A2 cut down the middle (210mm x 594mm) I can print a pan on the HP with no difficulty and I have done it on the Canon too (with the same size of paper). Now, for some reason, I've  lost or forgotten the setup on the Canon. In the Canon driver, I've set up a paper size of 594 x 210 mm (allowed in the driver settings) and a page size equal to or a little less than that. When I open the print properties dialog box from QI it shows the size as "Custom (scaled)" and prints accordingly (i.e. much too small). The "preview" in QI itself looks fine. The Canon help file is of little use with this and I've searched elsewhere with little success. The other thing I can't seem to do (any more) is to name the custom paper size - I had been able to do this in the past. When I select the size under "Custom" there seems no way and nowhere to name that custom size. Nor does there seem any way to delete the ones I set in the past.

My memory eludes me (well I am nearly 70)  Grin

Regards

John

Sorry, this should really have gone to the "printers" section above. I'll put it there now Roll Eyes

I appreciate that this is not strictly a QI issue but I hope someone has been through this before with the iP4500 and might be able to help!

Hmmm! I was surprised too, but the "suspect" file was saved in PS CS3 and will open in anything else too, including Paint Shop Pro and Faststone Image Viewer for example. The only one to "spit it out" is QI!

20  Mike's Software / Qimage Studio Edition (archived) / QI Studio 2010.112 quits unexpectedly on: February 19, 2010, 06:27:52 PM
I'e had an odd problem when building thumbnails from a particular folder, with QI suddenly quitting without warning or error messages. The "culprit" turned out to be a large .png file (a panorama) of about 60MB. Temporarily removing that from the folder solved the issue. There are other .png files in that folder, including one of about 30MB which QI opened with no problem. Is there an image file size limit, and/or does it affect only .png files?

Hi Terry,

Slightly puzzled about that, since others who have even fewer posts than me are shown as "Studio Users"! (That's why I asked the question).

I have followed the procedure to access the Studio forum, but no response after 3 days. (I see another poster has the same problem, having had no response for a considerable time).  Obviously having paid for the "premium product" it's rather disappointing not to be able to access its support forum.

I've been trying to get access to the Studio Forum without success as yet. I also notice that my profile says "Newbie" although I purchased and registered my Studio edition way back in 2008. I have not changed my email address in that time, so there seems no reason not to recognise me as a "Studio User" in these forums. Any idea how this is supposed to work? Is it automatic, or does Mike do it manually?

John

I've just applied too, and would hope to get "permission" in a day or two. (Mike does say to wait 1-2 days - might he be away?).

I wouldn't doubt there is a mechanical difference but then I've had the glass fall out of a Canon filter too. What shook me with this particular purchase was the enornous price difference. Not just a few quid off but a fifth of some prices.

I had a B&W polariser fall apart - and you can't get much better than B&W!

25  Technical Discussions / Computer Hardware / Does a "wireless USB link" exist? on: May 29, 2009, 03:08:52 PM
I sometimes use my D300 with Nikon Camera Control Pro. (Great now it works with LiveView!).

The drawback is that you need a long USB cable. Does anyone know if a "wireless link" that can bridge the gap between two USB devices exists?

Wow, shades (no pun intended!) of the old Canon Pellix!

Years ago, I bought a cheap(ish) replacement UV filter to use with my Olympus OM2n, whose Zuiko lenses were beyond reproach. I was puzzled as to why many of my shots were soft and, worse, varied across the frame although at an inconsistent angle (if you see what I mean!). Fearing the worst (shifted elements) I then realised that it was happening with all the lenses of that filter size I used. That cheapo filter actually varied in thickness across its surface! Great relief all round, but a lesson to buy known branded filters in future.

Although the forum login remembers my login details, it doesn't log me in automatically (like most) and I still have to click on the login button. I don't see an option to do so - is there a way?

Great forum to have - I hope it grows and grows!
