1  Mike's Software / Qimage / Qimage New Features on: June 17, 2019, 08:13:25 PM
Hi there, I get a lot of use out of Qimage so thanks for making such a useful piece of software. I have a couple of bits that could make my life so much easier for when I'm processing a lot of images.

You have the 'Load Innitial Properties' button in the Prints section at the bottom on the left, I use this to load my borders. However, I use two different types of borders. I'm either using 0.5 ml black borders for all paper prints to make sure I don't trim white prints too small, or I'm creating canvas prints with a stretch border and a white border on top. It would be awesome if that button to load the settings allowed me to select between pre-saved borders, it doesn't take too long to change but I print a lot and every second counts.

The other thing that would really help me would be if there were three border options. I'll explain how I'd use this. So I create canvases with a 0.9" stretch and then a 0.8" white border. This system works perfectly for me until I'm printing a white canvas and so I can't see where the print, stretch, and border are. All I would need then is a 0.01" black border to outline the whole thing. At the minute I have to change it to a 1.7" white border. Again, not totally awful just it could save me a bunch of time each day without having to switch the settings.

Please let me know if these are features that I just haven't found!

Thanks!
Ben

Hi there, thanks for your response. That's not quite what I mean, I will attach some images to illustrate what I want. It might be that this software is mostly used for photography so the issues I have aren't common.

So I have 3 images attached. I can either choose to have no mirrored border and instead use the colour of my background as seen in the third image. This isn't desirable as it means I need to get the fold perfect. Or I can have a full mirrored border as in the first image, this as you can see from the image, results in some artefacts depending on where my subject is in the image. The solution to this would be to make my subject smaller and so further away from the border so it isn't mirrored. The second image titled 'bottom mirrored' is the effect I would like to achieve. So I only mirror the bottom and the sides have a solid colour border so the border is a mix of two things.

I hope this makes sense but please ask any questions for clarification.

Hi all, I wonder if it would be possible, currently or in a future update, to allow more customization in the borders. I would like to have a mirrored border on the bottom and a single colour border on the other 3 sides. I often find that if I'm working with a large image I can get artefacts in my border that I don't want. For context I print portraits of pets against a single colour background.

At the minute my solution is to just make sure that if my border is 1" then I keep my subject 1" away from the edge but this isn't mega convenient.

Hope you guys have a solution for me!

Thanks, printing on a much longer page size might be a good idea. I'm just a little worried about scratching the print when feeding it through my trimmer. I'm sure if I'm careful it should be fine. It's just a matter of time really, I might set 50 things off to print and they will all be unique images so to size each up would take quite a lot of time. Using the function described earlier has saved me a bunch of paper but I think changing the paper length to make 150" or something might do the trick.

Thanks!

Just wish it was even simpler and could make all pages different sizes by removing all blank space.

Ah cool, didn't know that was there! Will that take into account if I have a bunch of images all different sizes? Will each sheet be a different size? I can try it out later on I guess.

Thanks so much for this simple solution.
6  Mike's Software / Qimage Ultimate / Economical Roll Printing - How to stop wasting paper on: July 31, 2018, 12:28:50 PM
Hi there!

I'm wondering if there is a way for me to stop wasting so much paper without having to manually adjust for each print. So I print using rolls of paper on 24" Epsons. So if I'm printing large prints I will be using my roll but it the paper size will be 24" by 34". This is fine for standard paper sized prints but then a square print will have a whole lot of white unprinted paper on the print too. I would love it if I could just load my images up and then print and Qimage puts the image as early as it can and then stops printing as soon as the image is done regardless of the paper size.

So if I have a square image at the minute and print it to best fit on my 24" roll using my paper size as 24" by 34" the image is just thinner than 24" by 24" but the paper is still 24" by 34". Can I get it so that it starts printing immediately and then cuts straight after so the paper used is 24" by 24"? But, I want this without changing my paper size option as I might be printing 20 images all different shapes.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the tips Mike. I have however been making a bit of a fool of myself. I have been trying and trying to get this to work but the issues actually seems to be that the profile wasn't installed. I assumed that to since I could get access to the profile I didn't need to install it. All it took was a right click and install and everything seems to be fine.

Sorry for wasting everybody's time but thanks for all the help.

Thanks Fred, if I ever need to I'll just change over the profile.

Cheers

Benny,
Of course we can have a look in the profile.
Mike asked you to send it to him, and I asked you to send it to me too. I even put my email address in my post for you.
wathree.ssz@verizon.net

Waiting....
Fred

Thanks Fred, email has been sent.

Ah cracking, good to know. I didn't think of that otherwise I'd have just changed the profile.

Everybody's right on the ball in this forum. Thanks a lot!

Hi there, I have discovered there are some files that Qimage doesn't like and I can't find any indication as to why. I will post a link in here, maybe it's my computer but I have tried it on my desktop and laptop with the same results. There were some other images that were doing the same but when the last Qimage udate came out these were then viewable. The problem is that when you look at the folder in Qimage the image says 'Image Read Error'.

Here is the link - https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/docs/Earth.jpg

Thanks in advance,
Ben

Thanks everyone for your advise, after wasting a whole bunch of ink and paper and trying different profiles i'm pretty sure that it is infact the profile that I have made. I don't have the issue with the standard Epson profiles. Do you guys know much about ICC profiles? Is there any chance I could email my profile over and you might be able to tell me if I've done something wrong with it? I created a brand new profile yesterday and I'm having the same issue so it's probably me doing something stupid. I'm using X-rite's i1Profiler with i1 basic pro 2 if that shines any light.

I'm gong to post it onto a couple of print forums too for some more advice.

Thanks again for all of the comments and ideas.

So what my issue is is that in Photoshop when I click print and input my profile I get a soft proof and then when I print the print matches that soft proof. When I do the same in Qimage the soft proof looks totally different no matter what rendering intent I set and the print is much darker and some of the colours seem to clump together. I'm not at the printers any more so I can't change the settings and print but I have printed using various settings for rendering intent and I didn't make any progress. Regardless, since I'm using absolute colormetric on both the result should be the same, which it is not. I appreciate that there may have been an instance where Photoshop was changing the rendering intent without notification but since my print matches my soft proof I can't see how this is happening.

Essentially I just need the colour quality from Photoshop and the imposition and queue tools from Qimage.

As far as I can tell all of the settings and the rendering intents are the same as in Photoshop and the same as I use when using my Epson standard drivers. I have checked that I am not doubling up on profiles and I have tried multiple drives.

Benny,
I can see one setting that is wrong. The rendering intent is set to Absolute Colorimetric; should be Perceptual, or Relative Colorimetric.
If you research Absolute Colorimetric, that is a no-no for photographic reproduction.

Try  a reset on that.
I would render a guess that you have the Photo Shop rendering set to Relative colorimetric.
.... or possibly PS is ignoring the setting and substituting.

Also, the alert is showing in Photoshop but as you can see from the screenshot below the settings in the driver are off.
Also, in your PS shot, it warns you to remember to turn off color management. Did You?

Thanks for the response. The settings are absolute in both Qimage and Photoshop so even if I am rendering in a non-conventional way then they should both be the same. The second post has the screenshot of the Photoshop settings I used for print.
